Work Text:

The thundering heart beat of the great sage equal to heaven was something special. His heart beats strong and even like a Zhangu, the beats so strong they could make the toughest of warriors tremble.

To Liu Er Mihou, those beats were one of comfort, familiarity and love. The dark furred monkey goes to sleep listening to those beautiful beats and wakes to them every morning without fail. Warm, gentle, sunlight shines through the pale white curtains that line the only window in the bedroom. The two celestial monkeys starting to wake up with the world, Sun Wukong being the first given he is a morning person, unlike Macaque who continued to sleepily doze atop Wukong's bare chest comfortably.

This was how they usually started their mornings. It would start with Wukong waking first, the golden furred simian slowly getting his partner to rise as well, which is always met with a plethora of protests from the darker furred simian.

“Time to wake up my sweet plum.” Wukong murmured softly, not needing to raise his voice given how sensitive Macaque's hearing is, the shadow monkey all but grumbled in response. “Come on Mackie, we got a big day planned ahead of us.” Wukong chuckled softly watching as Liu Er tucked his face further into the crook of Wukongs neck. “Mh five more minutes, nh, you're so warm.” Macaque mumbled, tail intertwining with Wukong’s lazily. Wukong only rolled his eyes at this, it wouldn’t hurt to stay in bed just for a little while longer, the world could wait after all.

“Alright, five more minutes then we have to get up moonlight.” Wukong hummed, his arms finding their way back around the black furred monkeys' form, keeping his warrior close.

They stayed like that for a few minutes longer just like Wukong promised, the sun now fully engulfing the bedroom brightening it greatly. The sunlight felt wonderful against both monkeys' skin and fur, warming them up nicely. At some point they had both begun to lazily purr, the golden furred monkey setting to grooming the dark furred monkeys back while the other dozed for a while longer against him, his soft breaths lingering against Wukongs throat comfortingly.

Giving a brief glance up to the clock mounted on his bedroom wall near the door, exactly eight minutes had passed, they had to get up sometime soon. Pressing a gentle kiss to the shadow demon's temple, slowly trailing those feather light kisses down to those beautiful, sensitive ears of the monkeys. Smirking as the king watched the twitch and flutter, they were quite ticklish after all. “Mm, Wukong stop it.” Macaque complained, nuzzling his face against the other fluffy shoulder.

“Nope, come on we gotta get up now Liu Er, my starlight, my precious mango.” Wukong rambled on, pressing a kiss to the other monkey's face with each nickname spoken, this causing the shadow demon to snicker and roll away from Wukong and his kisses. “One of these days I will get you to have a lazy day Peaches.” Macaque yawned sleepily, still laying on his back as he brought his hands up to rub the lingering sleep from his eyes. To this the Monkey King rolled onto his side to better face the other, reaching a gentle hand out to thumb over the old scar that painted the right side of his face. “Hm one day maybe, but not today, I have things planned with Mk.” Wukong hummed, leaning over to press a final kiss to the monkey's scarred cheek and those ever so soft lips.

Having spent more than enough time in bed, Wukong was first to get up and out of the nest of pillows and blankets, Stretching with a grunt and yawn of his own. Macaque on the other hand easily rolled onto the spot where Wukong had laid previously, purring contently at the warmth left behind.

Smiling, Wukong grabbed a simple pair of peach coloured shorts and a white shirt, making his way over to the small bathroom across the hall from their shared bedroom, freshening himself up and dressing himself proper for the day.

Macaque on the other hand took a lot longer to get out of bed. While Wukong had already gotten dressed and freshened up, the dark furred monkey was now only just getting out of their bed, making it neatly as he does every morning. Stretching Liu Er shuffled out of the bedroom into the bathroom to get himself freshened up first before getting dressed.

Wukong was already out in the small kitchen, putting on the kettle to make tea and coffee for himself and Macaque. Humming, the King looked in their fridge for some breakfast, deciding on some scrambled eggs, tomatoes and spinach for himself and Macaque. Wukong was not one to eat cooked food often as he preferred fruits, vegetables and nuts given he is a monkey after all. Though he does have moments where he craves certain cooked foods, like eggs or fish and especially Pigsy’s noodles. He didn’t cook often, Macaque didn’t either as they were immortal but they still got hunger urges. Pigsy had even taught the monkeys how to make a few simple dishes for this reason.

Getting out a pan, setting it down on the gas powered oven, letting it heat up as he began to crack a few gets into a bowl, scrambling them easily with a whisk. Having scrambled the eggs Wukong then chopped up some spinach and tomatoes, tossing the vegetables into the now hot pan. Letting the spinach and tomatoes cook down a bit like Pigsy had taught him, using a spatula to stir them around in the pan, before finally adding the scrambled eggs into the mix.

While that cooked together slowly, Wukong put on two pieces of toast for himself and the shadow demon, said demon having finally emerged from the bedroom dressed in one of Wukongs baggy sunflower patterned shirts, a pair of lavender sweatpants and a pair of white socks. “Oh my god it lives!” Wukong teased as Macaque shuffled up behind Wukong to wrap his arms around the other, resting his head against the great sage's strong back.

Humming softly to a song that had been stuck in the king's head for a few days now he stirred around the scrambled eggs, ear twitching when he felt Macaque shift once more. “Everything okay?” The golden furred monkey asked, briefly glancing over his shoulder at the other who simply hummed in response. “Just listening to your heart, it helps me wake up.” Macaque replied softly, nuzzling his face into Wukongs back comfortingly, a silent way to tell the other monkey he was fine.

Chuckling, Wukong lightly smooths a hand over Macaque's arms that held him in place, “That’s lovely and all but I need to finish getting breakfast ready Mango. Think you can cut up some fruit for us?” Wukong asked of the others who simply let go with a chitter of understanding. Making a soft chuff of apology causing the king to chitter back something along the lines of ‘It’s fine.’ They don’t usually use what Mei calls their ‘monkey chatter’ often but it’s nice for when you don’t feel up speaking words.

While Wukong got to work on finishing up the scrambled eggs and toast, Macaque busied himself with cutting up a few peaches and cantaloupe, placing the cut up fruit into a sizable bowl to share between them.

Wukong brought the two plates of toast and scrambled eggs over to the small round dining table of Wukongs, also grabbing Macaque's purple mug of coffee and his peach mug of peach tea while Macaque carried over the bowl of fruit. The two monkeys sat in a peaceful quiet, digging into the food hungrily, having not realised just how hungry they both were.

It wasn’t long before both celestial monkeys finished up their food, now both just sipping lightly at their hot drinks. “What do you have planned with Mk today sunshine?” Macaque asked, resting his head in the palm of his free hand against the table, still a little tired. Wukong smiled at the nickname, tail flicking from side to side in a pleased manner “Ah well we are gonna work on his balance when standing on the staff while it’s upright. We struggled with it last week so we are trying again with a different approach and all that stuff.” Wukong explained leaning back in the dining chair, holding his mug with both hands enjoying the gentle warmth it was giving off. “You did tell the kid to wear light clothing, yeah? It’s going to be a bit of a heat wave today.” Macaque asked with a hum, taking a sip of his coffee.

“Yeah I let him know. We’ll be taking lots of breaks if it gets too hot, I don’t need Mk passing out in the middle of training today.” Wukong stressed, Macaque chuckling softly as his tail intertwined with the king's own reassuringly. “He’s tough, he’s not fragile like glass Wukong.” The shadow demon reminded, giving a soft chirp of concern to the stressed Monkey King.

“Hah, I know, I always worry about the kid though. He’s my cub STUDENT, HE’S MY STUDENT!” Wukong corrected himself, his face lighting up brightly in a stunning red of embarrassment. The shade of the red rivaled Macaque's own face marking. Laughing Macaque set his mug down with a wheeze, watching Wukong tense up, clutching his mug close to himself. “Oh peaches that is truly precious.” Liu Er cooed in a teasing tone, causing Wukong to huff, chittering unhappily “No no no you stop that!” Wukong groaned, finally setting his mug down, ears flat against his head in an anxious manner.

“Oh Shi Hou, I'm only teasing you. I find it quite sweet how you see Mk as your cub hm?” Macaque chuckled softly, having calmed down from his previous hysterical laughter. Easily standing from his seat, he rounded the table to Wukong. Hugging the monkey from behind the chair, arms easily wrapping around the king’s shoulders as he rested against Wukongs shoulder “It’s cute.” The shadow demon smiled, pressing a kiss to Wukongs warm, freckled cheek.

Taking a breath, Wukong settled back, face still flushed a brilliant shade of red. “Not a word to Mk or anyone alright?” Wukong warned the other who simply hummed in response, nuzzling his face against the other simian's cheek lovingly “No promises..” Macaque snickered, earning a flick to his nose from Wukong, the shadow demon yelping in surprise at the action.

Yep, their mornings are always the same. Waking up in each others arms, listening to each other's gentle breaths and strong beating hearts. Their mornings are always full of kisses, cuddles and copious amounts of teasing and playfulness between the both of them. It was their routine no matter the weather or season, it’s just how they liked it and Wukong wouldn’t have it any other way.
