Wukong stifled a yawn while Macaque looked half asleep on the couch. The twins had kept them awake all night, they were fussy but neither adult could figure out why. Wukong had resorted to sitting outside the temple with them so everyone else could get rest, it wasn’t like he needed a lot of sleep anyway. Luckily it seemed to have worked as Qiáng yì and Xiaohuáng were wide awake and happily eating breakfast, the former eating sloppy cut up mango slices while the latter ate a bowl of colorful cereal. Báixuě too was awake, though she seemed to have already had her morning bottle as she was trying to grab the mango slices from Qiáng yì. The Great Sage set the thankfully sleeping twins on the shadow monkey’s lap before going to find something to eat.
“So what are we-” MK trailed off as he walked in “Are you okay?” He asked, his voice sounding worried
“Fine bud” Wukong replied as he missed the apple he tried to grab “Just a bit tired” He added, quickly snatching the apple successfully on the second attempt.
“The twins kept us up all night” Macaque muttered from the couch
“Kept me up all night” Wukong corrected “I took them outside to give you a chance to sleep”
“I didn’t” the shadow monkey yawned, causing Wukong to finally yawn in return “I was up worried about them” The Monkey King sighed and sat himself down besides Macaque
“Of course you were” He gave a light smile
“We don’t have to train today” MK offered politely “I’m sure Pigsy needs my help”
“It’s fine, we can still train” Wukong assured him “Get something to eat anyway” Hexie whimpered, signaling the brief moment of peace was gone. Macaque gave a tired sigh and picked the two cubs up, leaving the room before they got too loud.
“What do you think is wrong with them?” MK asked, replacing the shadow monkey on the couch with a bowl of the same kind of cereal Xiaohuáng had been eating, had he been more awake, Wukong would have made the teen also eat something healthier but at the moment he didn’t care much.
“It could be anything at their age” Wukong gave a slight grumble, while his tone was slightly sour he didn’t mean any ill towards the teen, he was just worried about the twins and was too tired to hide it.
“So what are we going to do today?” The teen asked
“Stances and what not” Wukong seemed to drift off for a moment “Shouldn’t be to hard”
“Uh huh” MK nodded “I can do those on my own, I know most of them already, why don’t you try to get some sleep”
“I said I’m fine bud, don’t worry about me” Wukong shrugged off his successor’s worry.
“Don’t try to argue with him,” Macaque said from the other room, obviously eavesdropping. Wukong finished the apple, core and all, before standing up and stretching his tired shoulders out, rotating them almost completely backwards. MK for his part didn’t react in the slightest as it wasn’t uncommon for Wukong or Macaque to do unordinary things and he had gotten used to it in the few months he had been staying with them.
“Finish up, I’ll be waiting outside” Wukong said walking out of the room.
Wukong wasn’t sure when he had fallen asleep or for how long, he figured it must have been for a few hours since the sunlight filtering through the small openings in the rock around him had grown brighter and the air felt warmer. MK was diligently working through the stances and strikes they had been over before, he glanced over and smiled
“You’re awake” The teen walked over
“You shouldn’t have let me fall asleep” Wukong was a bit grouchy that he had fallen asleep, he was supposed to be the Great Sage after all, sleep was something only mortals needed.
“I figured you needed it” MK shrugged “It’s close to lunch time, I would have woken you up then” He added.
“Well before we get lunch, I have a new stance to show you” Wukong replied but before he could even stand up a sharp shout came from inside the temple. A minute later Macaque walked out, handed Hexie to Wukong and then disappeared back inside, his tail pinned close to his waist. The Monkey King and Monkie Kid exchanged confused glances before looking down at the cub. Hexie seemed just as confused as they were, Wukong noticed she wasn’t as fussy as she had been before and was acting much more like her normal self. Wukong reached to smooth some of her fur, she grabbed his hand and like she tended to do, tried to gnaw on his fingers. Before Wukong didn’t even notice when she chewed on his hand but this time he felt a sharp sting, for a moment he felt his heart do a back flip but he managed to keep his composure. Without a word he walked inside, leaving MK to try to puzzle out what was going on. Wukong found Macaque in their bedroom, wrapping a bandage around his tail. The shadow monkey glanced up, his eyes falling on Hexie who was still viciously gnawing on Wukong’s finger while the Monkey King pretended not to feel it, at least she hadn’t managed to draw blood. Yet.
“I found out why the twins wouldn’t sleep,” Macaque replied with dry humor.
