Blanketed

Summary:

Sometimes when one needs a friend it becomes a bit more than that.

Notes:

Disclaimer - I don't own Digimon. This was written for the Digimon Shiping Prompt Challenge. Story goes AU after the first part of tri. and delves a bit into where I thought tri. was headed until it wasn't, with Tai disappearing.

Prompt:

"Here's a blanket. You looked cold"

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The light from the computer screen flickered across the room—across the ceiling, across the walls, and across the person in front of the computer, looking as concentrated as he did regarding the computer screen in front of him. Kari stood in the doorway of her brother’s room—the room that used to be their father’s home office- before their parents decided Kari and Tai were old enough to have their own rooms.

Kari walked slowly in without sounding, hoping her parents wouldn’t wake up. She gently lifted a blanket from the bunk that had migrated from what was their room to Tai’s so that she could get the brand new furniture while he got the brand new room. Except, now Tai wasn’t there to use the room. He was nowhere to be found.

“Here’s a blanket,” Kari said, draping it over Wallace’s shoulders. He startled and looked at her, as did his two twin Digimon. “You looked cold.” Kari pulled up a chair, letting out a sigh.

“Sorry, Kari,” Wallace said. “I still don’t have a clue what happened to your brother.”

Which was why Wallace was there, although--

There was some knowledge regarding what happened to Tai in that they knew from Matt’s account that the Digimon had taken Tai, which in turn meant he was somewhere in the Digital World. They were looking for them—all of them, yet in thinking this, Kari knew that there were some other places, like the Dark Ocean. That place wasn’t where Kari wanted anyone to end up in.

The worst part, though—was that the adults around her were not--

It was as if Tai’s disappearance meant nothing. And the other DigiDestined, they’d started leaving her out, as if to protect her from what they found out. Which, in turn, led her to reach out to Willis via e-mail. He started his own search in the States before taking a trip out to Japan, where he tried finding information regarding what happened to Tai, yet he didn’t have the same skill set that Izzy did—he even admitted it.

And the worst part—the adults not paying attention seemed to come in handy as her parents didn’t react to Willis staying in Tai’s room any more than they responded to Tai being missing—which hurt.

But at least Willis was trying, and he was communicating with her. She pulled another chair over and sat down, leaning into him, watching the computer screen. That was as far as it went as Kari didn’t want to push her luck, yet in the back of her mind, she wondered, “ How would Tai react if he knew we’d grown close? Like an overprotective brother or an over-supportive brother? I hope we can bring him home soon.
