Summary
Five years since graduation (1994), and it seems that the whole party has moved on. Mike has no idea what moving on really means and embeds his grief, his confusion, and his own hidden identity into his novels.
It started as his release, a way to cope with and understand El leaving them, and why he could only tell her he loves her when she wasn't looking him in the eyes. As time has passed and his novels are gaining popularity, it becomes harder for him to hide.
It's November 3rd when he gets the call, a frantic Joyce on the other end of the line. Will had just taken a teaching position at Hawkins Middle School, where it all started, but no one had heard from him in three days. Mike knows it's none of his business, and he and Will, well they didn't talk as much anymore, but the part of him that can only be found in his novels has to know Will is safe.

From beneath the bed, something reaches out—a mass of darkness, a shapeless nothing—and it grabs Mike by the wrist, yanks him forward. Mike chokes on a yelp and flails his arm free, blood dripping from where the shadows grabbed him, like the touch of darkness has split him open. He tries to scramble away, unfolds his legs to kick himself back but only makes himself easier, more vulnerable. The unidentifiable mass encircles Mike's ankle, and he screams something agonized, terrified—and then it pulls Mike, clawing at the carpet with his bloodied fingers, under the bed.
