Fuese como fuese, conocía el significado de aquellas flores mejor que el de ninguna otra, un dato marcado en su cabeza con un hierro al rojo vivo: "recuerdo y sacrificio".
Recordaba, de forma vaga, que estas flores eran las primeras en nacer después de una guerra, entre las tumbas de los caídos. Se suponía que era una analogía a los tiempos de paz que iniciaban después de una tragedia. Pero, a pesar de saber esto, Stanley no podía dejar de atormentarse por la vívida imagen de aquellas flores emergiendo del pecho sangrante de cierto capitán codicioso ni tampoco podía dejar de reprocharse como había sido él quien plantó estas flores en primer lugar.
