It’s a YA novel, but it made me think as the main character struggles with their culture feeling too American in Vietnam and not American enough at home. I’ve struggled a lot with trying to connect with my Japanese heritage. I only got a few years with my Obāchan and Ojiichan, I have a handful of memories of their home and their stories about growing up in Japan. Like my mum made a lot of Japanese food growing up but we never did any of the holidays or traditions, and being in a space that is majority white space I tried to fit in so I wasn’t seen as the other. I mean that's just one of the reasons as well I’ve been othered.Series
