He is also quickly becoming obsessed with a boy whose very existence may be jeopardized by his presence alone.
Too bad Shane is itching to be released from the ties that bind him to his boring life, no matter the cost. Too bad Ilya is selfish enough to cut him loose.

Like most artists, he pays his dues tending bar while making short films with his friends in his spare time. He gets a job working at the Kingfisher, a gay bar owned by hockey player Scott Hunter and retired goalie Eric Bennett. Ilya Rozanov plays for the Brooklyn Beasts, and, while he respects Scott Hunter a lot more since he came out, they play for rival New York teams, so they don't exactly love each other. Ilya likes to visit the Kingfisher, though he hasn't come out yet. Since his father died and he has no one back in Russia he cares about, he's felt a lot more free to be himself. One night, he gets mesmerized by a bartender with pretty freckles, and he won't stop until he gets what he wants.

“I would put a pride flag and an apple for them.” Ilya shrugged. “Or like a hockey puck or something.”

They walked across the carpark and when they reached the street, Rozanov turned to him as he stepped off the curb. “So, when did boring Canadian boy--”
But that was all that came out before a car skidded into him.
Shane stumbled back as the sound of air bursting from Rozanov's lungs hit him. He tumbled over the roof of the car and onto the snowy asphalt below. The car kept skidding onwards, crashing into a car in front and before Shane even knew what was happening, he was scrambling towards Rozanov’s body.
“Rozanov, Ilya-- can you hear me? Fuck! Are you okay?” He asked, frantic. There was so much blood, people were running towards them. He could hear phones being dialled, could feel the presence of others around them.
Ilya’s eyes were open, but it was as if he were looking past him, up towards the sky above. He coughed once and blood sputtered out, dribbling down his face "Mama." He said softly.

Since Shane was a young boy he has been able to rewind time. He had never done it for anything huge, just small things here and there.
Then Ilya Rozanov died in front of him.

Like he had been lit by a spotlight, Shane watched as Ilya turned toward the bar slowly (or was this just happening in slow motion?) Their eyes caught like desperate rabbits trapped in snares. And Shane could feel a familiar animal panic swell in his body as they both watched each other from across the ballroom. He forgot what song had played at that club in Montreal but he remembered something like this.
A busy dance floor, Ilya and a woman. Shane and Rose. A soft press on his shoulder sent his brain into over drive, his whole body spinning around. “Jesus Shane” Rose stepped back, her drink sloshed wildly in her glass as she bumped into a bar stool.
