'Till I Find A Better Way To Waste My Time

Summary:

Steve's hand slipped into his pocket and he pulled out the note Nancy had helped him write. His thumb slid over the crease where he had folded it.

Steve never planned for anyone else to see it. The only reason he let Nancy see it was because he needed her help to make it sound the way he wanted to. But maybe if Steve didn't have the confidence to tell Eddie himself about all the confusing feelings he had towards him, or ask him if they were actually friends, he could just anonymously give him the note and see what he thought. And he knew Eddie could use some positivity. But what if he found out it was Steve? What if the note upset Eddie? Before Steve could consider his doubts for longer than a few seconds, he was slipping the note in between the slats at the top of Eddie's locker.

Since Eddie tells Dustin everything, and Dustin tells Steve everything, he assumed he'd hear what Eddie thought about it soon enough.

Chapter 1: introduction: the note

Chapter Text

Eddie's POV:

Eddie and Dustin always walked to their first class together, their classrooms were right across the hall from each other. And Eddie always stopped at his locker on the way to get his books. He never brought any of them home, even if he needed them for an assignment.

But as Eddie opened his locker, laying on top of his textbooks was a neatly folded note that he definitely didn’t remember putting there the night before.

“Dude. I think someone broke into my locker.” Eddie showed the note to Dustin.

“You know there’s slits in the top of the locker, right? It must’ve been slipped through there.”

“Who would slip a note into my locker?”

“I don’t know. Have you tried reading it?”

Eddie rolled his eyes. He leaned against the locker next to his and opened the note. Dustin stood on his tiptoes trying to peer around the note and read it.

“It’s addressed to me, not you! A little privacy would be appreciated.” Eddie held the note even closer to himself.

“You gotta at least tell me what it says!”

Eddie finished reading the note and immediately crumpled it up. He grabbed his books from his locker and closed the door, then tossed the note carelessly behind him as he walked away.

“Woah, hey!” Dustin dove for the paper and caught it before it hit the floor. He ran to catch up with Eddie as he unfolded it.

“Don’t read that.” Eddie warned.

“Too late!” Dustin replied. His eyes darted over the carefully written letters. He gasped. “Eddie! You have a secret admirer! Why would you just throw this out?”

“Because.” Eddie said matter-of-factly. “I’m even more of a freak at this school now than I was last month, and that’s saying something. It’s gotta be some dumb prank. Make the freak think someone actually likes him and laugh about his crushed hopes when he finds out it’s fake.”

Dustin paused to consider this. “Okay, but wouldn’t it be a little more, i don't know, public, if someone was trying to embarrass you?”

Eddie tilted his head in a way that Dustin took as wanting him to elaborate.

“Well, someone slipped this note into your locker. It would’ve been more public if it was, i don't know, taped to the outside of it instead, or if someone put up a sign in the hallway. More public would be easier to see your reaction to, and then more people would see it and join in on making fun of you. That’s how those jerks’ brains work. This seems different.” He explained.

Eddie shook his head. “I trust your judgement, but I don’t trust this. Who would seriously leave a note like that for me? It sounds like a love note. If it’s not a prank then whoever it was must have put this in the wrong locker.”

“If you don't get another note, I'll leave it alone, I promise. But if you do, I want updates. I. want. details." Dustin gestured wildly. "This could be big, Eddie, getting anonymous notes in your locker is like straight out of a romantic comedy.”

“Okay.” Eddie conceded. "But you can't tell anyone else about this. Not even the rest of Hellfire."

"My lips are sealed." Dustin smiled and put the note in his pocket.

They parted ways to enter their respective classrooms and Eddie waved at Dustin. "See you at lunch."
