Next of Kin

Summary:

So far the Legends haven't found a way to convince the Science Police they're actually on the same side. Nor do any of them have anyone they could call, even if they were allowed a phone call.

Except Gideon, apparently

Notes:

Writer's Month Day 9 setting prompt: post canon

Work Text:

Future jail sucked.

At least they were together, Behrad had said optimistically, but that still didn't give them a way out, and from what Booster had said, they wouldn't be together once the Science Police decided on their fixed points assignments.

Reliving the day over and over in order to protect the timeline.

Alone.

Sara had not managed to convince any of them protecting the timeline was what they were already trying to do.

"Maybe we should ask if we can talk to our lawyer."

"We don't have a lawyer, Gary," Ava said.

"I have lawyers," Zari said.

"They don't really do that here," Booster said. "Not for time travel crimes."

"We should at least get a phone call," Astra said.

"Do you know anyone in this century?" Spooner asked.

"They can time travel too, one of you must have someone they can go get."

"We could call Ray," Behrad said. "Are we allowed to call Ray?"

"We should call Mick," Sara said. "If anyone knows about breaking out of jail, it's him."

"Maybe don't say that aloud," Booster said.

"You really shouldn't," a guy in Captain Cold cosplay stepped in. "You're the captain."

He pointed at Gideon.

"That would be Captain Lance and Captain Sharpe," Gideon said.

"Your ship's records say it's you. I need you to come with me."

"You can't take her," Gary said. He held Gideon's hand.

"I just need to ask some questions."

"Without a lawyer," Astra said.

"You're not exactly dressed like a cop," Sara said. "Mick told Lisa and Ray told Barry but last I checked they left Leonard's warrants open, it's what he would have wanted. So, Captain Cold-"

"It's Commander," he said. "I'm in charge of the Renegades, we deal with rogue time travellers."

"Well, we demand a phone call," Spooner said.

"Fine, give me the details of your next of kin in this century."

"How are we meant to know that?" Astra said.

"Sara and Ava are each other's," Zari said. "And Behrad and I, unless you want to call Maman and explain?"

"Do not do that," Behrad said. "Also, wrong century."

"Astra conjured Gideon out of the Waverider, maybe she counts, and none of that helps because we're all together anyway, Behrad."

"What does that mean?" Cold asked.

"I was an A.I. and Astra turned me into a human," Gideon said.

"You are the original Gideon. The one the Time Masters stole."

"I don't understand."

"Either you're the original Gideon or programmed from her, you do have a next of kin I can contact. Is that what you're requesting?"

"Yes," Gideon said. "Yes, I will not speak with you until I have spoken with my next of kin."

"Wait there, I really need my boss." He walked off.

"Who's he getting?" Behrad asked.

"I don't know," Gideon said. "I don't remember before the Time Masters. I thought they created me."

"Maybe they did," Zari said. "He said you might have been created from another Gideon."

"That they stole," Gideon said. "Stole from who?"

"I hope whoever it is is on our side," Sara said.

Commander Cold took about an hour to come back, with a man in a normal suit who looked vaguely familiar and the Flash.

He looked at them and pinched the bridge of his nose.

"All right," Barry said. "How much bail do you need?"

"This isn't about bail," the man in the suit said. "They can't be released on bail, they tried to prevent the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, and then interfered with the invention of time travel."

"All they wanted to do was help me save Alun," Gwyn said. "We had a plan to avoid the paradox."

"You lot did what?" Barry asked.

"It was temporary," Sara said. "We just wanted to get the attention of the evil Gideon and the robot Legends so we could steal their ship and get back to the future."

"And I thought my life was weird. You are the same Sara who yelled at me a lot for one mistake I tried to fix, telling me none of us could change time?"

"Technically I died and got cloned and I'm part alien now."

"I suddenly really empathise with how Dig feels when he visits Central. You do remember how much you yelled the first time we ever met after I helped solved your first murder, you're welcome. Preventing World War One, are you joking?"

"Temporarily," Sara said. "Eobard put it right."

"Eobard Thawne."

"He was the designated fixer," suit guy said.

"He died," Sara said. "Robot Nate is now."

"Yeah, he's not dead," Barry said.

"He is, he died right in front of me."

"He's even worse at staying dead than you, he's really not. Wouldn't that have made my life easier. No offense, Captain."

"He keeps trying to erase me from existence too, I completely understand," suit guy said.

"That's true," Barry said. "Eddie Thawne died to try and erase him from existance, shouldn't you have been erased too?"

"It's complicated," the captain said.

"That's fair," Barry said. "You lot. Walk me through again why you needed to prevent World War One instead of maybe, I don't know, leaving a message for the guy who can time travel-" Barry gestured at himself- "to come and pick you up?"

He looked at Sara.

"You can time travel?" Gwyn asked.

"If I run fast enough," Barry said

"Who are you?" Astra asked.

"The Flash. I will admit that your team changes so much I only know Sara and kind of Zari."

"Different Zari," Zari said. "The timeline changed."

"Genuinely, what the actual fuck," Barry said. "I make one mistake because I just saw my dad get murdered in the exact spot my mom got murdered when I was a kid and it's the worst thing possible and you lot just get to do whatever you want and it's fine."

"We did get arrested," Behrad said. "Are you Gideon's dad?"

"What?"

"You made Gideon."

"My A.I.? Yes. She's still learning, she's got a long way to go before she's as advanced as the version Eobard brought back from the future, but she's getting there."

"Astra made her human."

"Hello," Gideon said.

Barry blinked.

"I don't remember before the Time Masters," she said. "I could also have been made from your Gideon, which might make you my grand-creator."

"I have another kid?" Barry asked. "I need to buy more chairs."

"How many do you have?" Sara asked.

"Chairs?"

"Kids, Barry."

"Nora and Bart. Erased from existence because of Eobard Nora. And there was a thing with the Forces, the Speed Force still calls me Barry, but the Strength Force, the Sage Force, and the Still Force sometimes call me Dad."

"The what forces?" Ava asked.

"The source of time calls you dad," Commander Cold said.

Barry looked between them, Cold, and the captain.

"You know what," he said. "Why don't I call Deon, and we'll all have a proper conversation and get all this sorted out."
