"This is so dumb." She said,
"I know." He answered.
"You are so dumb." She said again.
"I know." He answered again.
Veronica Sawyer loves Jason Dean. She really does. But Jesus, sometimes she genuinely wonders why. Times like the one she is living right now.
When she proposed to him to leave on summer vacation with the Sawyers, he didn't immediately say yes. But after hours of Veronica convincing him, he finally accepted and, once they finally graduated, they were leaving for the beach house Veronica's parents apparently owned. It was just once they arrived that JD realized what "Sawyers" meant. Not just the parents.
It meant the whole family.
At first, Veronica was worried he and her cousins wouldn't get along. His uncles actually like him, he is always respectful with them (and her) and yes, dropping the coat during summer helped too.
But her cousins? Another story.
They are pretty much jocks. Not Kurt and Ram level for sure, but still jocks.
Jason on the other hand wasn't just worried. He was terrified. It took weeks already for her parents to like him, (and saying like was a big word) what would the rest of her family think?
And yet there they were, two days after their arrival, throwing themselves off a cliff while the brunette girl was worried sick. "Please JD, it's dangerous. What if you hurt yourself?"
"Darling, I survived Westerberg. I can handle a small cliff."
Veronica would like to contradict him because no, it's absolutely not a small cliff, but it's too late because he's already throwing himself in the water.
The splash in the water is welcomed by Veronica's two cousins's cheers, and a few seconds later there he is again on the surface of the water, that stupid smirk of his she so love smiling at her.
She rolls her eyes and shakes her head, but he knows she's not actually mad. Or he hope so. As Mike and Finn swim back to the beach for a round two (he assumes) he stops in the water to stare at her. She's still on the cliff, her aunt has now joined her and they're currently having a conversation about God knows what.
She is so beautiful.
She is wearing that green two-piece swimming suit that she loves -he still remembers how happy she was when she showed that to him, she claimed it as her "symbol of freedom from the Heathers"- and her brown locks fall perfectly on her shoulders. Brown locks that are still dry because "I don't want to wash them again tonight."
God he loves her. He loves her so much. It's clichè and he knows it, but he would still choose her over anyone even if she was wearing a trash bag.
The thing about Veronica Sawyer is that she made everything look beautiful. Even high school. She even managed to drag him to prom -and he had fun too. He loves her so much.
Their eyes meet again, and she smiles at him. She says I love you. He answers I love you too.
He sees her climbing down the cliff just as her cousins are throwing themselves off again, so he moves and reaches her on the shore. She doesn't see him behind her, busy taking the suncream from the bag. He grabs her from the waist, startling her. "Fuck! Jason!"
He laughs and kisses her sweetly on the lips, and he can feel her smile on his. Did he already say how beautiful she is? "You look so pretty today." He mumbles, still in the embrace. She blush and tries to hide it- failing miserably. "You always look so pretty." He repeats.
She raises her gaze to look at him. "I bet you say that to all the girls."
"Ah, you got me. But you know what I don't do to other girls?"
"Letting them ride you while being tied up to the bed?" She asks with fake innocence in her eyes.
He licks his lips. "Hm, yes, and I will definitely do that tonight, but also-" He immediately grabs her bridal style, holding her tight so that she can't run free. "JD?" She asks, worried this time. "C'mon, come swim with your boyfriend."
She gives him a deathly stare. "Jason Samuel Dean I swear if you try to wet my hair I'm killing you."
"I promise I'll wash your hair myself."
He kisses her on the cheek and runs to the water. "JD! JD no please n-" And the second later she finds herself completely wet, while her boyfriend is laughing. She should be mad at him, she should be.
But instead she can't help but melt, at the sight of her constantly serious boyfriend laughing. He's happy.
When they come back to the house and they shower together, he's happy too. That night at dinner he's happy too. And he's happy when they finally can go to the bedroom and be on their own.
"You're going to bed?" Mr. Sawyer asks them as they climb the stairs.
"Yeah, goodnight dad." She kisses his cheek, but something seems off with him. "Is… everything ok?"
"Uh? Oh, yes yes don't worry. It's just, listen, at least try to be quite alright? Because I know that Jason is, but you can be really loud sometimes. Goodnight Veronica." And with that, he went back to the kitchen.
Oh. He heard us.
The girl turned towards JD, who was red in the face trying not to laugh. Veronica too was red, but she felt like dying.
"Yeah Veronica, try to be quiet this time will you?"
"Shut up."
