Work Text:
It was dark out already, the moon almost halfway up the sky shining brightly. All the curtains were closed, with only a bit of moonlight trickling through and lighting up the room. It was a school night and the mansion was quiet, it was almost eerie.
The sound of rustling sheets filled the room. It felt like it was too quiet. She can only hear her heart beating in her ears and the occasional sound of the sheets moving with her. Twisting and turning, she tried to keep her eyes shut.
For some reason, Amity couldn’t sleep no matter how hard she tried. She couldn’t get comfortable, occasionally taking her blanket off when it got too hot, or putting it back on when it got too cold. The blanket was covering her entire body up to her nose. It was getting unbearable. She was trying to search through her brain until she found the reason why she couldn’t sleep, but to no avail.
With a final whimper of protest, Amity brought the blanket down to her chest. She turned onto her back, laying down in a starfish-like position. Slowly, she opened her eyes and sighed. Usually sleeping wasn’t a problem for her, but why tonight?
Taking a few deep breaths, she sat up and looked around the room. Her lilac hair was tousled from turning so much. She reached up and thread her fingers through her hair, trying to flatten it back to normal. That’s when something purple caught her eye.
On her desk sitting directly under the moonlight was her crystal ball. It almost seemed like it was trying to tempt her into using it. Tempting her into calling Luz. However, it was midnight and she couldn't risk waking up Luz and bothering her.
Wait.
Luz?
When did she start thinking about Luz? Why did she even think about calling her?
Her eyes locked onto the crystal ball again. She was going to see Luz in the morning for school, calling her would just do more harm for their sleep schedules than good. Assuming that Luz would even pick up.
Shaking her head, Amity swung her legs over the bed and planted her feet on the floor. She got up and started walking over to her desk. On instinct, she reached her hand out to tap on the ball and call Luz. She realized what she was about to do and stopped with her hand hovering right above the ball.
Thinking about it, calling her would lead to disaster. She would ask what she was doing up so late and why she even called. Amity doesn’t know the answer to those questions. She would probably stumble over her words and end up saying something stupid.
With a huff, Amity decided to go back to bed and try to sleep again even though she knew it would be pointless. Crossing her arms however, it all hit her like a train.
She missed Luz even though she saw her a few hours ago. She missed her dumb smile, her giggles, and her brown eyes that seemed to glow in the sun. Missed her rich, brown skin that was warm to the touch. Missed everything about her and—
And whatever. Reaching out her hand out once again, she finally tapped on the crystal ball and called Luz. Before she had a chance to regret anything and end the call, the person at the other end picked up after two rings.
At first, it was silent. Both of them breathing quietly and staring at each other through the crystal ball. But before she could say anything, she heard a quiet voice calling out for her, “Amity?”
That’s when Amity lost all of her confidence and stumbled over her words. She couldn’t find the right words to speak. Couldn’t comprehend how she was this flustered after hearing her say her name.
But before she could speak once again, she heard a tiny giggle come from Luz’s end. Amity locked her eyes back onto the ball to see a sleepy Luz on her makeshift bed, moonlight shining down on her. Her head was resting on her palm and she could see Luz kicking her feet up in the air. Her hair was messy, but Amity thought it looked perfect regardless. And, Titan, her beautiful smile that seemed to glow under the moonlight.
Luz spoke up, “It’s funny, I was about to call you too, Amity.”
“I— Um. Really?” Amity bit her lip.
She nodded in confirmation and smiled, “Yeah.”
Amity cleared her throat before speaking up again, “What were you doing up so late anyway?”
Looking into the crystal ball, she saw Luz sitting up while holding her ball. “Couldn’t sleep. Figured I could use some company.”
Amity raised one of her eyebrows, “So you figured you would wake me up just to keep you some company?”
“Hey, you were the one who called me first,” Luz pouted.
“I guess that’s true,” she said before giggling, which caused Luz to giggle as well.
After a moment, they quieted down to drink in each other’s company. Amity could hear Luz’s quiet breathing, which comforted her. It made her feel like she was really there. That she could reach out and thread her fingers through Luz’s hair.
Through the ball, she saw Luz look up at where her window was. She saw her eyes light up for a brief moment before looking back down at Amity, smiling.
“Want to look at the moon with me?”
Amity felt like her heart was being squeezed, “Yeah, sure.”
She picked up her crystal ball and headed towards the window. She opened the curtains and window, letting the moonlight flood through and cover about half the room. While she was getting comfortable on the sill, she could hear humming from Luz’s end. The sound of rustling and footsteps indicated that she sat down at her window as well.
Amity looked up and saw the moon. It was a full moon tonight, the moon showing off all of its glory as it shone light down onto the Boiling Isles. It was a truly beautiful sight, but having Luz on call with her made the sight all the more pleasant to look at.
“Titan, the moon is especially beautiful tonight.” Amity sighed dreamily, keeping her gaze on the moon. She felt her grip on the crystal ball loosening as she became more relaxed, resting her head on the outline of the window and crossing her legs.
Luz let out a soft hum of agreement. It was fairly odd hearing how quiet Luz was, considering how energetic she was during the day. Then again, it was quite a bit after midnight, so she must be pretty tired. She had to admit, it felt nice in a way. Assuming she only showed this side of her to Amity.
Speaking of being quiet, she didn’t know whether Luz fell asleep or not. She only heard the sound of her soft breathing at the other end of the line. Looking down at the crystal ball in her lap, she felt her breath hitch.
Amity saw big, brown eyes staring directly at her. Her eyelashes were fluttering as she slowly blinked, eyes raking over her facial features when she turned her head. Amity felt like she was being studied under her gaze, feeling a small rush of heat claw up at her face.
Even if it was dark out, Luz shone so brightly. Brighter than the moon could ever hope to be. It was almost like the moon got all the light from her, the center of the universe.
“The sun,” Amity whispered. She hadn’t noticed she said that out loud until she saw Luz tilt her head like a confused puppy.
“What?”
She cleared her throat, repeating what she said in the most even voice she could muster, “The sun.”
In a confused voice, “What about it?”
She could feel warmth spread throughout her body as she said, “It reminds me of you.” Her heart was beating so fast, she could feel it pounding against her chest.
She saw something flash across Luz’s eyes for a brief moment, something she couldn’t name. Luz stayed quiet, not responding to what she said. Amity felt something akin to anxiety flow through her, so she looked away and back up at the moon.
After a moment, Amity heard a hushed voice say, “The moon reminds me of you.”
She blinked as she turned to look back at Luz. After processing what she said, she felt her heart soar. She never wanted to leave this moment. She wanted to stay here and be with Luz forever in their own little bubble away from the rest of the world.
“Really?”
“Yeah. You’re pretty, like the moon. I would argue that you’re prettier, even,” Luz said with a voice dripped in honey.
“Luz, you can’t just say that.” She wanted to scream.
“It’s true though, Amity.” Luz had the softest smile on her face that she had ever seen. She wanted to rip her heart out of her chest at the sight. Wanted to yell about how you are so much more beautiful than me.
Usually Amity wouldn’t want to say anything about her own feelings, but right now she really wants Luz to know how much she wants her. She wants Luz to know that if she asked for it, she would give her the entire universe.
She wanted to cry because of how much she wants. Her heart was tugging at her chest, telling her to just say it. Telling her to stuff her heart in Luz’s hands and say you can have me if you want me.
And if Luz didn’t want that, then she would accept that too.
“Amity, listen—“ She paused. Luz’s tone of voice contained something she couldn’t name. Usually Amity could read her well, but for some reason she couldn’t as well tonight. She wanted to know what Luz was thinking, wanted to pick apart her brain with gentle hands and study it.
She didn’t realize she was staring until Luz looked away with anxiety swirling in her eyes.
“What’s wrong, Luz? Are you okay?” she asked with a hint of concern.
Luz turned to look at her once again, with a certain glint in her eye, “Yeah, I am.”
And Titan, Amity couldn’t take it anymore. Her heart was screaming Luz, Luz, Luz. She felt the blood in her veins pumping with want. Maybe even something more.
“I need to tell you something—“
“I want you, Luz!”
They stayed quiet, letting what the other said sink in. Amity felt like she was on fire, the heat in her chest making her feel like she’s going up in flames.
That is, until she heard Luz let out a soft breath. For a second, Amity felt herself freeze, her grip on the crystal ball tightening. She felt dread start to pour into her blood from the anticipation, until—
“Yeah?”
The dread started to slowly disappear at the tone of her voice. A lump in her throat slowly forming instead at the realization that she might get what she wants.
“If you don’t like me like that, then it’s okay—“
“I want you too, Amity.” And if Luz didn’t have the sweetest smile on her face.
Amity felt her breathing begin to falter. It felt like she was drowning in Luz’s words, she never wanted this feeling to end. She never wanted to feel this with anybody other than Luz. The mere thought makes her want to rip her hair out.
“Luz, I don’t know what to say.”
“It’s okay my moon, I can wait for you.”
“I don’t want to lose you.” I don’t want to love you too much.
A pause. “You won’t lose me.”
“How can you be so sure? What if this doesn’t work out? What if we don’t work out?”
Luz’s eyes visibly softened, “Oh, moon. You won’t lose anything, especially not me. If anything, I’m never going to let you go.” That pet name will be the death of her one day.
“You don’t know how much I want that. Want you.” Amity breathes.
Something unknown flashed in Luz’s eyes once again, but this time it stayed. Once Amity realized what it was, it made her want to cry a whole ocean of her own tears just for Luz.
Her gaze was filled with an unbelievable amount of affection. And maybe a hint of love. It made her want to be right next to Luz. To hold her cheek against her palm and tell her how much she means to her.
“I want you too. So much,” voice a little hoarse. Her tone sounded so inviting, so welcoming to the idea of them being happy together. Amity couldn’t stop smiling, cheeks flushed and the corner of her eyes crinkling. She just felt so, so happy.
“I just want to be next to you right now,” Amity whispered out. “I miss you so much.”
“Titan, you don’t know what you do to me.” The smile that Luz had on was so bright.
“You drive me insane.”
She could hear Luz’s breath hitch at what she said. Through the crystal ball, she saw Luz staring at her with soft lips parted. The fact that Amity made her feel that way felt so good. She felt drunk in the moment, drunk on Luz.
“Tell me more,” Luz exhaled.
Amity lets out a soft breath, “I can’t wait to be with you.”
“Yeah?” she mumbled.
Feeling her fingers twitch with restlessness, Amity reached up to her necklace to play with it. She nodded to what Luz said, feeling a small weight on her chest. She needs to let it all out right now.
“I want to cuddle with you. I want to hold you.” Sucking in a breath, she continues, “I want to never let you go. I want to be with you forever.” Titan, she needs to breathe.
“Amity, I—“
“I want— I want to kiss you and never stop. I want to take care of you,” it all spills out. She felt tears prickling at her eyes, her chest had an even heavier weight than before. The weight that can only be described as need.
“Amity, please slow down— Breathe, moon.”
“You don’t understand, Luz. I need you. I can’t breathe around you, yet I’ll die without you.” Tears finally escaped from her grasps and slid down her cheeks. They were falling down faster than she could comprehend.
“My sun, I think that— I think that I’m in love with you.” She swallowed down the lump that formed in her throat.
With that, Luz was rendered speechless. Mouth agape while Amity cried tears just for her. Tears that were weighted with pure love.
The world had stopped spinning just for them. It felt like they were the only two people to exist at that moment. Just the two of them. Amity and Luz. Luz and Amity.
Amity felt like she was growing addicted to the feeling of loving Luz. It felt like she was burning in her own love, and she wanted to give it all to Luz.
In a watery voice, “Titan, I think I love you too, my moon.” Luz’s cheeks were covered in tear tracks. Amity could only wish to be there with her right now, holding her face as she wiped her tears with her thumb.
“Sun, I won’t ever stop loving you.”
They were both smiling with everything they had through their tears. They were perfect for each other, crying together and acting as if this was the last time they would see each other.
“I don’t want you to. You are so perfect, my moon,” Luz said with the most gentle voice, still watery from crying.
Amity’s heart still hasn’t stopped pounding in her chest. It was screaming at her with need. It was overwhelming in the best way. “You are the center of my universe and you always will be.”
“Will you be my girlfriend, my moon?” Luz’s voice was dripping with pure love, and her eyes were beaming with affection. It left Amity speechless, her lips parted as she stared at Luz. Their breathing was synced up, and if she searched enough, then she could feel their hearts beating together, too.
“Yes, I will be your girlfriend, my sun,” she said after a moment of admiring her girlfriend. It felt like her heart was in her throat and that she was about to pass out. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too.”
They both chuckled, drinking in the other and trying to stay in the moment for as long as possible. Still processing their new found love, they stayed quiet in the presence of the other. They were sending each other their most love filled gazes.
Suddenly feeling heavy exhaustion flow through her, she yawned. Realizing how late it was, she asked Luz if she wanted to sleep on call with her. Of course, Luz said yes. They slept to the sound of each other’s breathing, having the best night of sleep they had in a while.
And if they suddenly went to school with the biggest smile on their faces and started sharing kisses between classes, nobody commented on it.
