Work Text:
selina kyle had always believed in fairytales. she had loved them since she was a little girl and her mum bought her all those wonderful storybooks full of princesses saved by their knights in shining armors. and so, while growing up, she had always believed that someday her own prince charming would’ve found his way to her, to live happily ever after.
she had never found him. all the guys she had dated were disappointing to say the least, silly boys who called themselves men and couldn’t even stand the thought of a woman being better than them at sport games. no, she had never found her real-life prince charming, and there had been no knight in shining armor to save her, when max had pushed her out of that damn window.
after that day, her life had changed forever. sweet lovely selina, who believed in fairytales and stories about true love, was gone and someone else had taken her place. someone stronger. someone reckless. catwoman.
but the day she had met bruce wayne, the part of her that was still human had fallen for him completely, not because he was the perfect prince she had always pictured, but because he was real, and good, and she could see that he was flawed, just like her.
when they had both realised that they had been fighting the whole time, as well as falling in love with each other, her hope for a normal, happy life with the man she loved had started to crumble. they were not just bruce and selina, they were also batman and catwoman, and they were not meant to be.
that had been her thought when she had refused his proposal to forget her revenge and live with him, and the same thought had plagued her mind for two years before she had decided to come back.
but they had found their way back to each other, they always did. selina couldn’t help but smile, still finding hard to believe that their wedding was going to be celebrated in just a matter of minutes.
she was still in her room at wayne manor, the one bruce had given her when she had moved in after the engagement, even tho she had never really used it, at least until her mum had arrived one month before the wedding, claiming that they both needed her help with organizing the ceremony. obviously, maria kyle had stated that bruce and selina could no longer sleep in the same room until they got married, and it was imperative that they both didn’t see each other for the whole day before the big event.
right in that moment, her mother was admiring her wearing the wedding dress she had personally picked. or better, stolen. even if selina suspected that bruce had found out and had probably paid for it himself. it was a long backless dress in a shade of pearly white, with off shoulders open sleeves so long that they almost reached the floor. it was simple and light and, even tho selina had a soft spot for the color black, she had to admit that she loved the way that dress suited her perfectly.
“you look wonderful, darling.” her mum said, with tears filling her eyes.
selina was taken aback by that reaction. of course, she knew her mother was happy about her marriage with bruce, she had loved him since she’d introduced them to one another, claiming that her daughter had finally found the right man. if that was just because he was a billionaire, selina couldn’t tell.
yet, receiving a compliment about her appearance from maria kyle herself was something selina wasn’t really used to.
“thanks, mum.” she said, while giving her a hug.
“he loves you, you know sweetheart” maria said, adjusting one of her daughter’s golden curls behind her ear, “it’s something i’ve always noticed, it’s in the way he looks at you when you say or do anything. you both deserve this beautiful day.”
her voice started to crack again, and selina couldn’t help but feel tears prickling her eyes as well. her mum was giving them her blessing, she had finally gained her approval, something she’d always dreamed of ever since she was an insecure little girl.
maria stroked her cheek gently, looking at her daughter one last time before saying, “it’s better if i start going. the mother of the bride can’t be late.”
“of course not.” selina laughed, watching her mum leave the room.
there she was now, alone. she took a deep breath and looked at her reflection in the mirror. a grin crossed her face. she couldn’t wait for bruce to see her like that, especially after having spent a whole day without seeing each other. she wasn’t anxious or nervous, she had already gone through that the night before. in that moment she was only sure of one thing, everything they had done ever since they first met had lead exactly to that day, and she couldn’t help but think that maybe that was how their story was meant to end, after all.
and with that thought, she picked up her bouquet of red roses and made her way down the stairs.
in the meantime, bruce was already waiting in the wedding venue. when they were organizing the ceremony, he and selina had both agreed that they wanted to do something small, only surrounded by their family and closest friends. they didn’t desire any unwanted attention from gotham’s tabloids, especially after every newspaper had already published the headline “billionaire bruce wayne to marry socialite selina kyle” on their front page. everyone knew they were getting married, but no one knew when or where, and that was exactly what both bruce and selina wanted.
thanks to the help of some good trusted friends like dick and barbara, they had been able to set up a small venue in wayne manor’s park. they had put a bunch of elegant white chairs on both sides of a white carpet, as to create a small aisle, and at the end of it there was a flower arch made up by white and red flowers.
in that moment, under the same arch was standing jim gordon, not only one of batman’s most precious allies, but also someone very important to bruce as well, who also happened to have a license to celebrate weddings.
bruce was standing a few steps in front of him, nervously shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
“don’t worry bruce, i’m sure she will come.” jim reassured him, almost amused at the sight of a really anxious bruce wayne.
“i know” he replied, then added, “i mean why shouldn’t she? there is no reason why she wouldn’t show up… right?”
that question almost made commissioner gordon laugh. apparently bruce had found the only woman who was able to make him question everything until the very last minute. luckily, a few seconds later alfred showed up.
“mr. wayne” the butler called, “i’d like to inform you that mrs. kyle is taking her seat among the guests. she just informed me that ms. kyle should be here soon.”
“thanks, alfred.”
the butler gave him a small nod before taking his seat next to maria kyle. bruce noticed that, even if he was trying his best to hide it, alfred was very emotional. he had started seeing him happier ever since he and selina had announced their engagement, five months earlier. the old man was like a father to bruce, and he had never once hidden his concern about his future. alfred had always wanted a better life for him than simply suiting up and spending his nights on patrol, or risking his life defending gotham city, and bruce had finally started to catch a glimpse of that life when selina had made her appearance through max shreck's office door.
now, everyone was there. alfred, maria, dick, barbara and obviously her father, james gordon. selina was the only one who was missing, and bruce could feel himself holding his breath until he finally saw her at the end of the aisle.
not even in his wildest dreams he could have ever imagined selina kyle, the love of his life, dressed in all white, walking down the aisle. well, of course he had imagined that, many many times, but seeing it become a reality was completely different, especially because no fantasy could’ve done justice to selina in that moment.
she was incredibly gorgeous, there were no other words to describe her, with her blonde locks falling in waves over her shoulders and her flowy silk dress trailing behind her as she made her way towards bruce, her steps small and controlled. he could see her nervous smile as her blue eyes scanned the small crowd of people around them.
everyone present was looking at selina with their jaws dropped to the ground, especially bruce, and she couldn’t help but feel a pleasant rush of satisfaction. he wasn’t able to take his eyes off of her as she proceeded. she had been right after all.
he looked great as well, of course, absolutely handsome in his tailored black suit. and he was hers. or at least he was about to be, selina thought with a smirk.
the moment she had seen him in front of her had been different from how she’d imagined. she had thought that her heart would have steadied, but instead it started beating faster and faster, threatening to jump out of her chest at each small step she took towards the altar.
it didn’t stop until she was finally a few steps away from him, right under the cascade of flowers.
“hi.” he said with a small smile, in a complete loss of words.
“hi.” was her only answer.
“you look…” he began as he took her hand in his, leading her directly in front of gordon, yet he was not able to finish the sentence. it seemed like selina kyle was exceptional at leaving him speechless.
“i know.” she mouthed, with a chesire smile crossing her features.
when the ceremony finally started and jim began talking about the importance of marriage, they could only listen partially to what he was saying. both of them were lost in each other, in the fact that they were soon going to be husband and wife. when it was finally time for them to exchange the rings, and their vows as well, they felt like every single piece of their lives was falling right into place.
they had both decided to go for the classic wedding vows, because if there was something bruce and selina had always agreed on, it was that they didn’t need to speak up about their feelings in front of a crowd of people. they always told each other everything when they were alone, together, just the two of them standing on a rooftop or having a romantic dinner in front of a fireplace at wayne manor. but despite everything, selina loved the fact that they were promising eternal love to one another, the kind of love she had always dreamed of and never expected to receive or be able to give back.
and so there they were. bruce and selina. the bat and the cat. finally together with the promise that no matter what, they’d have loved and cherished each other always, until death did them part.
a small sob interrupted the moment, and both of them laughed at the sight of a teary eyed maria kyle, kindly accepting a tissue from alfred. when they turned to look at each other, selina could see that in something new was starting for them. their life, their fairytale, the one they had so longed for and always thought they didn’t deserve.
“you may now kiss the bride.” jim announced, even tho bruce almost didn’t let him finish the sentence.
he pulled selina in and passionately kissed her. she kissed him back and in that moment, it was just them. they forgot about their family and friends watching them. they were still on his couch during their first date, or on a snowy rooftop, or in the middle of a masquerade ball. it was almost like no moment had passed since that first christmas when bruce wayne and selina kyle had fallen in love with one another, and batman and catwoman had as well.
they kept kissing until dick stopped them, claiming that they would’ve had more time to do that afterwards and, even if she knew he was right, in that moment selina wished bruce hadn’t decided to keep a teenage boy under his wing, a boy who had interrupted them more times she could actually keep the count of. but truth was that, despite him being such a annoying little brat sometimes, selina had grown fond of him as well, and so she didn’t complain when he started saying that they were already late for the infamous wedding photos, something both bruce and selina loathed, but knew they had to do.
they started walking down the aisle, holding hands this time, as the small crowd of guests applauded for batman and catwoman, now husband and wife.
when the evening finally came, wayne manor was filled with guests from gotham’s elite. selina and bruce had known that they couldn’t escape a formal event in which they celebrated their union, and so they had let everyone believe that the official ceremony had already taken place in the days prior, somewhere far away from gotham, and that the party was just the waynes’ first official appearance as a married couple.
the manor’s ballroom had been decorated with the most elegant flowers, there were tables filled with food and glasses of champagne, and a bunch of couples were swaying gracefully on the dance floor. bruce and selina were one of them. they had spent the last couple of hours in front of a camera, so dick could gift them with a “proper wedding album”, complete with romantic pictures of them gazing into each other’s eyes with the sun setting in the background. despite their reluctance to waste their time with things like that, the newlyweds had agreed just to make dick happy, and after all they did want memories of that special day.
but now, with her head resting on her husband's shoulder and sweet music filling the room, selina felt good and, most importantly, she felt at home.
“how are you doing, mrs. wayne?” bruce whispered to her ear, emphasizing the last two words.
she slowly shifted her head, so she could look at him in the eyes, and teased back, “very good. in fact, i’ve never been happier, mr. kyle.”
he just smiled at that sentence. he would’ve let selina call him however she wanted, would’ve let her keep whatever last name she wished, as long as he could spend the rest of his life by her side.
then, she moved closer, her body pressed against him, “i want to get out of here.”
he quickly scanned the room, finding it hard to look away from her even for a second. everyone was talking and dancing, no one was paying attention to them, after having spent a whole evening of shaking hands and congratulations. he almost chuckled at the sight of maria kyle sharing a dance with alfred, who looked slightly uncomfortable.
“let’s go then.” he said simply, and selina’s face lit up. he loved her smile, and he still couldn’t believe he got to spend every day from now on being able to witness it.
she took his hand and dragged him across the ballroom, sure that he would’ve followed her wherever she led him. they finally reached the balcony, which was now desert, and closed the french window behind them. as soon as they were alone, selina grabbed him by the hems of his jacket and pulled him in for a long kiss, beginning to undo the first buttons of his shirt while he ran his hands all over her bare back.
“you know, this dress is easier to take off than the cat suit.” she purred against his lips when she pulled away.
“is it?”, he asked, not really listening to what she was saying, and then started to leave a trail of kisses down her neck.
“yeah.” selina breathed. she enjoyed his kisses for a few more seconds, before confessing, “i’m tired of these people.”
“me too.”, he looked up at her, staring into those bright blue eyes he had loved since the first moment he had met her gaze. “but soon we’ll be alone. just you and me.”
“soon won’t come fast enough.” selina complained, and he found it hard not to smile at his wife’s annoyed eye roll. she probably noticed his grin, so her voice shifted into a deeper tone. her catwoman voice, something they both knew he couldn’t resist.
“i know places, bruce. things we could do. together.”
as soon as she said those words and leaned in for another kiss, bruce knew he would’ve said yes to anything she proposed.
just when his lips were about to meet hers, something lit up the night. they both turned around to watch the bat signal projected into the sky, and selina leaned her head against bruce’s shoulder once again. were they ever going to have a single day, at least their wedding day, without having to suit up to fight crime?
her silent question was answered when dick stormed through the french window, making the couple almost jump.
“don’t you even think about it!” the boy yelled, “babs and i got this, at least for tonight.” she had never been so grateful to dick grayson in her entire life.
“enjoy your wedding night, you old man.” he added, giving bruce a pat on the shoulder before running away. selina laughed at her husband’s shocked face, before commenting, “they grow up so fast.”
“they do. and for once i’m not complaining” his gaze was fixed on her once again, “i can’t believe i’m going to share my life with you from now on, selina.” he told her, while keeping her close.
she stared at the golden wedding band on her finger. it was gleaming in the moonlight, just upon her diamond engagement ring. then she looked at bruce and for the first time she was sure that no one was going to keep them apart ever again.
“that’s it, bat. you’re stuck with me now. forever.”
selina pressed her forehead against his and they finally started living into their perfect forever.
