Prompts: “When was I meant to find out? When it was too late?” + “Break a leg, and I mean literally!”

1. Babysitter Uncle Gabe

Gabe was contently humming to himself, holding a hot mug of blood close to his face and inhaling the enchanting scent. O neg. His favorite. Ah. He couldn't wait for today, a day all to himself. Peace and quiet. Not that he didn't love his husband – adored him, truly – he had spent decades practically all on his own before falling in love with the werewolf. And werewolves were, by nature, pack-animals. Quite literally so. So there was always some pack-member over, be that Berto's direct family, or friends, or a spontaneous barbecue in their backyard with the entire pack.

Not today. Today, Berto was out hiking with his brother-in-law and Gabe would have the entire mansion all to himself. Just him, a mug of hot blood and a good book. Simply perfect.

“Hey, zio Gabe. Did you know that you have like no snacks at all?”

Gabe froze in his steps and slowly retracted until he came face to face with a teenager. Daniella sat on the couch, kicking her legs back and forth, facing the cabinet behind the couch, where they usually kept the snacks. Furrowing his brows, Gabe looked around.

“What are you... doing here...?”

“Ma dropped me off,” replied Daniella before jumping off the couch. “Snacks?”

“Why did your mother drop you off?” Gabe asked. “Your uncle isn't here.”

Daniella walked up to him and straightened, trying to look as tall as she could. Which wasn't much, what with her thirteen years. Usually appreciated, seeing as Gabe didn't know many people shorter than him. Right now, however, he had not anticipated a teenager in his home.

“You're my zio too, you know?” Daniella rolled her eyes slowly. “When you got married to zio Berto, you became my uncle too. And as such, you are qualified for babysitting.”

“I suppose so,” Gabe gritted his teeth. “But was I aware of this?”

A crooked grin stretched over the girl's lips and she shrugged. “Probably not. Mamma wanted to avoid you maybe saying no, since she has this great dance class she really doesn't wanna miss out.”

“...Right,” Gabe grunted and put his mug down to get his phone out instead.

“I'll check zio Berto's private secret stash of snacks while you yell at ma.”

The call connected just as Daniella ran up the stairs. “Ciao, Gabe? Is Dani alright?

“Daniella is quite alright, but why is she in my home, Julietta?”

Dance-class with Phoebe and, as you know, my husband is off in the mountains with your husband. So you have the honor of spending some quality time with your niece.

“And when was I meant to find out? When it was too late?”

Quite obviously, si. Otherwise, I would have rung the doorbell,” Julietta sounded entirely unfazed. “I have to go now, wouldn't want to be late. Have fun with your niece!

Gabe gritted his teeth. “Well. Break a leg, and I mean literally!”

He hug up and started cussing beneath his breath as he made his way upstairs to Berto's hobby room, where he knew his husband's private stash of snacks was located (even though Berto thought that Gabe didn't know. Of course he knew). He found Daniella sitting crosslegged on the ground, with an open package of beef jerky in her hands. Of course did she have the same eating habits as Berto. It ran in the family. Well, and in the pack. Werewolves had a high calories intake.

“...Your mother sends her best wishes.”

Tilting her head, Dani grinned at him. “Sure, she did.”

There went his nice and quiet day all to himself. And worse yet, he had to babysit. He crossed his arms, regarding the child thoughtfully. What did one do with an adolescent...?

“You're not really happy I'm here, huh?”

Gabe grimaced. “I'm not... I had a day to myself planned and I do not like surprises much, yes. And... I don't entirely know... what to do with you...”

Usually, the girl just spent her time with Berto. Berto was amazing with children. He was so soft and patient and funny and perfect, really. Gabe, he... It had been over three-hundred years since he'd been a teenager himself. Huffing out a sigh, he ran his fingers through his hair.

“I'm sorry,” Gabe added after a moment. “I'm sure you can imagine something more fun too.”

“I think you're fun, zio Gabe.”

Gabe's eyes widened in disbelief at that. “I have a hard time believing that, Daniella.”

“You're like centuries old! You're a vampire, you were a pirate! You're the coolest uncle possible!” Daniella motioned widely. “I love your stories and everyone is super jealous when I tell them.”

...Huh. He was the cool uncle? He'd always thought he was the awkward uncle. The one who had to be kept around because he was married to Berto. This was... unexpected.

“Okay,” Gabe shifted his stance. “What... would you like to do, then?”

“Mh. I dunno. Would you like to watch Pirates of the Caribbean with me and you could tell me a—all the things they got wrong in the movie?” Daniella's eyes were sparkling eagerly.

“Mh. That does sound... entertaining,” Gabe admitted after a moment. “Berto always rolls his eyes when I correct historical mess-ups in TV.”

“No. That's so cool. You were like alive back then! For real,” Daniella looked so eager. “And you were a real actual pirate! You have to tell me pirate stories after, okay?”

He had to watch out with those though; he had gotten in trouble with Julietta before for telling Daniella too gruesome details. It was hard to figure out what was appropriate for a child. When he had last tried to put on a cartoon for Daniella when the girl had stayed over, she had laughed because it was 'totally for children'. They grew up so fast and both trends and customs around children changed with the blink of an eye.

Berto was so exhausted. In the best way possible. He loved the ache of muscles that came from a good work-out. Especially when it was outside. Hiking, now that was the stuff. The only thing better was a full-blown camping trip where he could hike every day and sleep under the stars.

“Ba—abe, I'm home,” Berto called out loudly as he entered the mansion.

Noises from the living room guided him. The TV. Huh. Gabe rarely watched TV when he was alone it was usually Berto's idea. When he entered the living room, he found Gabe sitting behind Daniella, braiding her thick, dark hair, while one of the Captain Jack movies was on TV. Huh.

“Hey, zio Berto! Come join us. We ordered pizza. Zio Gabe let me order four pizzas.”

Grinning softly, Berto sat down next to his husband. Usually, Gabe tried to avoid watching Dani, because he never knew what to do with the kid. This was cute. Really cute. His husband was cute.

Notes:

There is one upcoming Writer's Month prompt that actually sparked an original idea in me and I've been falling down a rabbit-hole of world-building, that included taking prompts on tumblr so I could get a better feel for my new characters and flesh them out some more. I plan on posting one of the prompt fills each day leading up to the date of the Writer's Month prompt fill and this is definitely going to be a project I'll be working on beyond that!

After all, who doesn't like queer polyamory between a werewolf, a vampire and a warlock? ;D
