Chapter Text
9th September
My name is Danny Burke, and Olly Spring is my best friend in the whole world. We do lots of things together. We play Mario Kart, we play with his toy cars, we have adventures in our back gardens, and one time we even found dinosaur bones at the park! Mum says they were just chicken bones and made us throw them away, but I think she just doesn’t want us to be scared there are dinosaurs in England.
Right now it’s September, which means school has started, which is lame, but it’s okay because Olly and me are in the same class. We’re in Year 3 now, and it’s going to be the best year ever! Since we’re Year 3s all the classes are harder. They’re teaching us times tables in maths now. It’s so much to remember!
Today Mum had to go to the office, and Dad always works late, so I went to Olly’s house until Mum got done work. We played Mario Kart most of the day. Olly is so lucky! He has a big brother and a big sister! All I have is a little brother, and he’s nice, but Olly’s brother picks him up and they both help him with things and teach him stuff. I have to do all of that for Ant, and learn stuff first so I can teach it to him, and it’s a lot of responsibility!
Oh, Ant’s my brother. It’s short for Anthony. He’s four, and he’ll start school next year. I have to watch him a lot when Mum’s working from home. He likes to run around and follow me places, and sometimes me and Olly play with him. He’s really smart. He’s not even in school yet and he already knows how to spell his name. I taught him how to do that, and teaching stuff is really hard.
When we were playing Mario Kart Olly’s brother Charlie played with us for a while. Something funny happened when we were playing, though. Charlie walked in, and I saw him, and my stomach got all fluttery. This other boy was there too, called Nick. Nick is really big and looks really strong, and he and Charlie sat next to each other, and Charlie leaned on him. It was probably really nice for Nick to have Charlie lean on him like that.
Mum let me have dinner with the Springs since it was a Friday, so me and Olly got to have even more fun afterwards. Charlie’s friend Nick was there, too. Charlie seemed kind of sad at dinner, though, and he wasn’t eating his food. Mrs. Spring let us have bendy straws with our drinks, which was cool. Once mine fell off the table, and when I went to get it I saw that Nick and Charlie were holding hands under the table, and Nick was rubbing his thumb along the palm of Charlie’s hand. I don’t know why he was doing that.
After dinner Olly showed me this cool rock he found when he was at the park the other day. We’re pretty sure it’s a dinosaur egg. Olly wants to keep it in his room and see if it hatches, but we decided not to tell his mum and dad, because they don’t like animals in the house. Then we tried to put together Olly’s race track and race the cars on it, but we couldn’t get the pieces to fit, so we asked Tori for help, and she said that Nick and Charlie were really good at building race tracks, so we should ask them instead. When we came in they were sitting together, and the covers on Charlie’s bed were all messed up, but nobody was sleeping. Olly asked us if they would help us and they did. Apparently Nick is around a lot now, he's like another extra brother. I think that's really cool - nobody in our class has two big brothers and a big sister! Nick did most of the building while me and Olly told him where to put the pieces. We wanted to do a loop-de-loop, but Nick said we didn't have the right pieces. Charlie mostly sat on Olly's bed and watched. I think Charlie’s eyes are really pretty, even if he still looked a bit sad. Then we raced cars until my Mum came to take me home.
I had lots of fun, and now I just know this is gonna be the best school year ever!
