Being Father

Summary:

We all know Ron the Carnotaurus from Prehistoric Planet. But what happened to him afterwards?

Notes:

I'm sure we all loved Ron for his flamboyant mating display, and we all inwardly had our hearts broken for him when the female Carno rejected him. So, this is a sequel; a sequel which I believe gives Ron the happy ending he deserves.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The bull Secernosaurus bellowed in agony as Ron plunged his upper jaw - laden with small yet very strong and sharp teeth - into its back like a serrated club. The blow tore through the hadrosaur’s skin and flesh like a hot knife through butter, and as Ron pulled back he struck again and again, until the Secernosaurus slowed down, weakened by the shock and blood loss.

Ron followed at the distance, careful to stay away. He knew all too well how hadrosaurs could deliver powerful kicks with their hooved feet.

Eventually, the herbivore collapsed onto the ground in a sitting position, panting, and Ron lunged, letting a guttural hiss as he throttled the hadrosaur’s neck, killing it.

Once he made sure the Secernosaurus was dead, Ron let out a deep breath of air that he had been holding in. Hunts were always tiring business, especially when hunting relatively large prey. He panted, opening his mouth slightly to exhale as much carbon dioxide from his body as possible.

Despite this, he remained on alert for any Carnotaurus who would try to snag his hard-earned kill. Inhaling the sweet jungle air, he lowered his head and let loose a low-pitched, booming rumble from his gut.

The rumbles traveled through the forest floor, at frequencies able to be heard only by those whom he wanted to hear. Once upon a time, he had sent these deep stomach-churning rumbles throughout the forest floor to any female of his species who was out there.

Once he had sent out those rumbles, he sat by the carcass, and waited.

His ears perked up when he heard the rustling of leaves that broke the monotony of crickets chirping and birds singing. Looking up, he saw another Carnotaurus coming towards him, one as large as he was.

He stood abruptly, as if to ready for a fight…

Only to step forward and interlock his neck with the other’s.

This, after all, was his mate.

The female Carnotaurus let out a soft rumbling purr from her gut as she embraced her handsome mate, their necks intertwined tenderly with each other. A chirp from the ground suddenly interrupted their tender moment, and they took their necks off each other.

Ron seemed to smile as he lowered his head to see his four offspring running towards him, eager to greet their father if their chirping was anything to go by. He rumbled in greeting, placing his relatively gigantic head close to them as father & children sniffed each other, renewing their familial bonds.

Once they did so, the Carnotaurus babies chirped eagerly as their parents led them to their immense dinner-feast, prepared for them by Daddy Dearest.

Notes:

The way Ron killed the Secernosaurus was based off Robert Bakker's findings, that Carnotaurus used its upper jaw to inflict wounds like a serrated club, due to the short snout, relatively small teeth and the strong back of the skull - adaptations which are also found in Allosaurus.
