Work Text:
Some time ago...
That diva. The number one in the industry, and darling of CFM Studios, Hatsune Miku.
Kafu had heard all sorts of stories about her, that she was an arrogant princess who thought she had the world in the palm of her hand.
She dominated the rankings, making it hard for any other vocal synth to make it to the top. Oh sure, others had their time in the sun, but Miku's popularity was indomitable, enduring, in a way no one else could quite achieve.
And it drove Kafu nuts.
And so, she began to come up with a plan. She'd take the spoiled princess down a notch by telling her what she really thought!
Kafu chewed her breakfast contemplatively as she hatched her ingenious plan.
Kafu would take her by surprise and confront her, letting her know there was a NEW voice in town!
There would probably be crowds, so she'd have to be discreet about it.
She chuckled to herself. It was a brilliant plan.
Foolproof, even.
Now she just had to get there and work up the nerve to do it.
So.
Here she was, standing in front of CFM Studios, ready to face the diva herself.
She strolled in with an aura of cool detatchment. "State your business," said the security guard at the front gate.
"I'm here to see Hatsune Miku," she stated in a matter-of-fact tone.
"She's out to lunch right now, but she'll see you as soon as she can. Who should I say is calling?"
That was a little odd. Surely the great songstress would have some kind of waiting list, right? Unfazed, Kafu continued on her quest.
"Tell her," she said with steely determination. "Tell her Kafu has arrived."
She wandered the complex for a little while. It was pretty ritzy, unsurprising considering what a big name they were in the music business, though there were significantly less people than Kafu had been expecting.
She walked past promotional standees for various things, a concrete road roller statue, and various other things until she somehow found herself in front of Hatsune Miku's dressing room.
Curious, she went in.
Inside was pretty much what she had expected.
Most of the decor was negi-themed —she had had no idea there were negi-themed rugs until this very moment, though it's possible it was specially made; the curtains, on the other hand, were less surprising— or otherwise predominantly seafoam green with pink and white accents.
There was a neat stack of negi in the corner (presumably for snacking), racks covered with all sorts of costumes, and a plethora of Miku-themed merch and memorabilia.
It was... a bit tacky, all things considered.
She must have been standing there for quite a while, because she now found herself standing across the room from Hatsune Miku.
So much for the element of surprise...
She kept a neutral expression to mask her dismay at her plan quickly derailing.
Miku gasped when she saw her. "So, you must be Kafu, the new rising star in the business."
Kafu muttered a small "yeah..." and braced herself boldly for the surefire confrontation that was to follow, but what ended up happening instead took her completely by surprise.
Miku's expression turned into one of absolute glee. "It's so good to finally meet you!" she squealed, clasping her hands together and bouncing in place. "I've heard so much about you!"
"Like...like what?" Kafu said apprehensively.
"Like how you're really popular with the producers, and how your voice is really cute and distinctive! People don't really seem to take to the new vocalists quite the way they did back in the early days, so it's nice to see someone breaking that trend! Back when I was starting out producers wanted unique vocals, but then later on there was a push for 'realism' and everyone had to change their sound just to fit in, myself included. But you!"
she leaned in reeeeaally close with a big smile, and Kafu felt a teeny bit awkward.
"You stand out with your unique voice, and I'm so happy to see how much people love it! Oh, and I also just gotta mention how much I just love your outfit! Hey, do you want to collab??"
Kafu wasn't really sure what she had expected, but it certainly wasn't this.
She'd expected someone kinda... bitchy. A total diva. Not a big green-haired ball of sunshine who talked at sixty miles an hour.
Fame had evidently done nothing to dilute the songstress' genial nature.
However, it could be that that was just a front, and underneath lay a mountain of cruelty but... should she really be jumping to conclusions like that?
It certainly didn't seem very nice.
And Miku was just so earnest about it all, it really seemed genuine.
Kafu thought back guiltily to all the hurtful things she had planned to say before.
She just couldn't do it. Not after a reception like that.
"Uh, s-sure?"
"Great! I know a lot of producers who'd love to work with the two of us, and I could totally get you set up with some of them! You can just call me Miku, by the way, no need for formality. Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet, after all, and I always try to get to know new vocalists."
"Pleasure to work with you," Kafu mumbled. "Why are you so nice, anyway?" she said more loudly. It was a bit rude, but to the point.
Miku did not seem terribly bothered by the question. "Because I want others to be successful too! Honestly, it kinda bugs me that I have so much of the spotlight, and if I can use my own fame to boost that of the many other talented vocalists, then I will!" she said cheerfully.
Kafu deemed this a satisfactory answer.
They were quiet for a while.
"Oh hey, is it true what I heard, about how you're the new voice for Pikachu?"
Kafu was completely nonplussed by this non-sequitur. "Wha-- P-Pikachu? I'm pretty sure Pikachu's still voiced by Ohtani-san, last I checked. Why would I be the new voice for Pikachu?"
Miku sighed with a chuckle. "Ah, then it really was my imagination then. It's just that I saw this video on NicoNico Douga of this Pikachu lipsynching to one of your songs, and the combination felt completely natural! Sorry if that sounds kinda weird, I just think you'd be great at voice-acting!"
Yep. Hatsune Miku was definitely not the sort of person she had expected.
In the end, what do you suppose happened to these two songstresses? Well, they did indeed go on to collaborate with the backing of a number of fine producers, making many songs together.
Kafu, for her part, went on to be extremely successful and popular with producers in her own right, to the degree that she ended up pretty much being just as big a star as Miku.
While there's no telling what the future will bring, it's pretty safe to say that at least in some sense they all lived...
happily ever after.
~THE END~
