It was a dark and stormy Tokyo night, and Kou Yamori was missing.
Nazuna Nanakusa wasn’t worried, really.
Honestly.
The young vampiress was still playing Minecraft in her apartment, in fact.
Okay, she had fallen into lava five times, been killed by an Enderman, and nearly lost her diamond pickaxe.
By midnight, when her wrist-transmitter hadn’t beeped once, and Kou still hadn’t turned up at her apartment, she decided that- just perhaps- she ought to check up on her favorite prey.
She saved the game, turned off the console, and went to find her rain gear.
Her usual cape was fairly protective, true, but it didn’t help against landing on wet things. She found a pair of rain pants and rubber boots behind a stack of Playstation games in her closet, pulled them on, and headed out into the dark.
It was a big storm- almost a typhoon- coming off the hot waters of the Pacific Ocean to unleash its wild fury upon the islands that dared to halt its progress towards the mainland. For all that it was driven by warm water, though, the rain carried the biting cold of the upper atmosphere.
The street-lights flickered and swayed, casting moody spills of light amongst the battering tempest. Many of the buildings were dark, with no light that might challenge the howling rain.
Nazuna knew that the vampire who tried to jump too far or fly in that wild ruin would find him or her-self dashed against the buildings.
So she walked, clutching her gigantic cloak close around her.
This night, though, was simply not one meant for vampires or humans.
By the time she reached Kou’s apartment block, she was cold, wet, and not at all happy.
She pushed the ‘call’ button, glad the cheap little transmitter was, at the very least, waterproof.
It beeped.
“Kou-kun?”
There was a moment’s pause.
“Nazuna-chan?” His voice sounded a bit weak.
“Kou-kun? You don’t sound so great.”
“You think?” he said, sarcastically.
“Are you going to be all right?”
“Yea. I’m just a little weak right now.”
“Can I come up?”
“Sure.”
She looked around for a second, making sure no human was in sight, and then leapt. The wind caught at her, splattering her with rain, but she landed on the window-balcony with a barely-audible thump.
A moment later, Kou pulled back the curtain. He looked tired, and more than a little pale, but instead of opening the window, he gestured at her.
She gestured back, completely unsure of what he was trying to signal.
“What are you trying to say, over?” she asked into the transmitter.
“Come in the front door! I’m not opening my window in this rain! … over.”
She looked from him, to his bed – pushed up against the wall, which would undoubtedly get soaked if he opened the window, and back.
Then Nazuna made a fairly universal gesture of frustration, and jumped down.
A minute later, she was ringing the doorbell. Thankfully, the door opened.
“Kou? You don’t look so good.”
“No kidding.” He said, fiercely, though he held the door open and let her inside.
“Are you sick? Do you need a beautiful vampire nurse to take care of-” she started to tease.
“I definitely do not need a vampire nurse.”
“Oh. And here I thought it was my chance to wear the sexy nurse costume I’ve been saving.”
Kou’s face reddened, but he said nothing.
“Do you need medicine or anything?” she said, switching to a more serious subject.
“No, the hospital already gave me everything I need. Which reminds me- ”
He walked to the kitchen, and dumped out two huge pills from a bottle.
Nazuna, trying to be helpful, went to get him a glass of water, but was stymied by the fact she still couldn’t remember where the glasses were kept.
“You were at the hospital?” She asked, worried.
“Apparently, I collapsed after getting home last night. Mom found me.”
“Collapsed?”
Koh focused a rather intense gaze on her.
“Yes.”
“Why are you looking at me like it’s my fault?”
“Because it is!”
“How is-”
“Iron deficiency, Nazuna-chan! You sucked so much, so often, that you gave me an iron deficiency!”
“Oh.”
