“No,” said Tom. “No, Jeff, you aren’t. You’re a sweet guy that tries to act all pissed off to hide it. I wouldn’t mind it as much if you were acting more pissed off, but you’re just acting…depressed. And believe me, man, I know about depression. I can tell when someone’s not feeling good.”
Jeff felt somewhat ashamed of himself for a moment. He knew about Tom’s depression, everyone did. Tom was open about it, more open than Jeff could ever be about anything, ever, let alone depression. Readjusting his cap to ignore the flush in his cheeks, Jeff said, “I’m—No, I’m not depressed, Tom, just—”
“Jeff, come on. We don’t have time for you to be lying to both of us right now.”
