Work Text:

“Layton!”

Someone banged on the door,

“Layton! Open up!”

“Luke, you wouldn’t mind attending to our guest would you?” Layton sipped his tea, “My hands are rather full at the moment.”

Luke ran to the door, swinging it open a tad more enthusiastically than was necessary.

“Oi, you brat! Don’t you know who I am?”, the man yelled.

“Inspector Chemley, you must speak up, I had no idea you were at the door.”, Layton smirks, “after all, you are quite an easy person to miss.”

“I’ve had quite enough of your cheek Hershel, now, if you could come with me before I drag you by that overcoat of yours!”

“He’s dead.”

“Thank you Layton, my team hadn’t noticed.”

“Odd that he’s been decapitated, that’s quite difficult to happen by accident.”

The man’s neck was tied in a knot, it was obvious this was intentional.

“What sick bastard would chop someone’s head off, he can’t have been dying for a football that badly!”, Chemley cringed, “I promise you Layton, I’ll get the best squad our noble country can muster!”

Chemley stormed off.

“I rather doubt his abilities, Professor.” whispers Luke, bearing in mind that Barton was struggling to crack a packet of Hobnobs, let alone a homicide.

The Professor smiled, “Don’t worry my boy, I have an old friend who I believe may be of assistance. Now what do you say to some cucumber sandwiches?”

Luckily for Layton and Luke, Flora from the kitchen had been eavesdropping on the conversation with the inspector - and of course, she wanted to come along too.

She heard the professor's mention of cucumber sandwiches and immediately started making them right away.

"I heard you mention cucumber-" and was suddenly cut off after realising no one was in the room. Of course they ran away as quickly as they could. Typical. Flora grumbled, it's not the first time it happened.

Meanwhile in the trusty Layton Mobile, Luke was curious about the professor's so-called 'old friend'. And Luke being Luke, wouldn't stop pestering poor Layton about it. He pondered about who it could be; Layton over the years has stated having an 'old friend' at least 15 times since they first met. This “old friend” keeps appearing throughout his life, it can’t all be the same person can it?

After a long journey, they arrived back home and dash inside. The Professor grabs the phone and rifles through his shelves, his arms vanishing behind strange artefacts. A worn blue tin is pulled from out of the mess. Luke stands in silence, watching his friend do something so alien to him. He watches him dart around the room, enamoured with how he knows every nook and cranny. The Professor sits down at his desk and opens the box, inside he reveals a phone number on a yellowing piece of paper and a strange key. He attaches a makeshift aerial with the key and dials the number.

“Hello? Hershel Layton, 2nd of November 1967. Can you lock on to my signal?”

A pulsating wheezing sound emerges from across the room, papers fly everywhere and the lights flicker. Suddenly a big blue box is standing in the room as if it was always there.

“That’s impossible!” Luke shouted, mouth wide. A second ago the room was empty. A door creaks open and a strange man steps out. Yep, based on his dress sense, he’s definitely a friend of Layton.

“Hello there everyone, I’m the Doctor.”
