Chapter Text
The hostess leads Lena and Kara into the depths of the restaurant to the back, where a table sits with a window showing a view of the water, with the sun dipping behind it glowing with oranges and yellows emanating from the surface. At times like this, the earth's yellow sun has faint red hues that bring the Kryptonian back to her home planet and the burning red of Rao. Kara's heart clenched at the memory.
"Well, well, Lena, who have you brought into our midst?" A sultry voice from the table brings Kara back from her thoughts. The superhero isn't sure how she managed to miss that there are people already at the table. It isn't as if she hasn't seen this same sunset for over a decade.
"Oh… Uhm…" Kara stumbles as she looks entirely at who she now realizes to be the Mayor. She has seen Mayor Mills hundreds of times over her career as Supergirl. The Mayor even gave her a key to the city. Kara hopes that she won't connect the dots to the Super. "My name is Kara. Kara Danvers." Kara shoves her hand into the space, but the Mayor only stares back at her. The brunette sitting beside her tilts her head towards a chair as an invitation to sit.
"Regina, stop looking so stiff. How many times do I have to tell you to get that stick out of your ass," Lena locks eyes with the Mayor in a power move? Kara isn't used to Lena being so crass and feels her face heat up.
"Well, when a reporter shows up uninvited to a night with my colleagues that I am participating in, excuse me for feeling hostile," Regina spits back.
"It's clear Lena invited her, my dear cousin, and please don't harass my employees. This one is instrumental, and I would hate to lose her," A familiar voice behind Kara has the hero whipping her head around to find the CEO of not only Catco but also Obsidian North, Andrea Rojas, staring back at her. Kara is brought through a whirlwind of emotions at once. Confusion as to how her boss' cousin is the Mayor and somehow she has been unaware this entire time, feeling glad that her boss has her back, and being entirely too embarrassed by the compliment. Lena can see Regina bristle before relaxing and nodding to the seat at the other end of the table. Kara, Lena, and Andrea sit, with the two CEOs simultaneously unfurling the cloth napkin and setting it delicately on their respective laps.
"I'm Sam, by the way," The previously unnamed brunette across the way gives a small wave, "I'm with Lena here."
"With Lena?" Kara asks with confusion because she certainly didn't expect that from the stranger.
"Samantha is the CFO of L-Corp. She recently relocated from Metropolis," Lena adds helpfully. Kara can feel herself relax at that.
"Welcome to the rich bitches club," Sam adds with a huge smile, and Kara can't help but feel herself warm up instantly to her.
"That is not our name," Regina sneers at the mere suggestion.
"Come on now, Regina. At this table sits four of the most powerful women in National City. All have top-tier salaries. It is an accurate description," Andrea smiles proudly before adding, "Although we are missing the most powerful woman of National City. I wish National City's sweetheart would stop in for these girls' nights so I could shamelessly hit on her some more."
Kara chokes on the water she just began to sip, coughing violently. Lena rubs Kara's back in soothing circles until the coughing fit ends before glaring at Andrea.
"Sorry, that took me by surprise. I didn't realize you held such strong feelings for Supergirl," Kara sputters out.
"Off the record," Regina looks pointedly at Kara, and Andrea dramatically groans before Regina adds, "I'm sure everyone at this table feels the same way." The women in the group nod, lifting their glasses of water as if to toast to the shared attraction. Lena pauses for a second before raising her glass, knowing she has the closest relationship to the hero than anyone at the table. Kara can feel her face flush and finds herself drinking half the water in her glass to distract herself from whatever odd feeling seems to be crawling up inside her knowing that everyone at the table finds her, Kara Danvers, AKA Supergirl, so attractive.
"Lena, you know Supergirl, you should ask her if she would like to join us next time," Andrea smirks at Lena, who playfully rolls her eyes as a response.
"Considering it was your magazine that coined the term Supergirl, surely you have better access than I do," Lena points out. Despite the lie, she manages to keep her face neutral.
"Oh yes, the queen of all media, Cat Grant, left behind a dossier with all information regarding Supergirl and her contact info," Andrea deadpans before adding, "Kara, maybe you can invite that stunning sister of yours." Kara chokes on her water again but keeps herself from spewing it across the table.
"What, oh Uhm, Alex?" Kara sputters out, but before she can respond, Andrea pipes back up.
"I do quite enjoy it when Agent Danvers stops by CatCo. She can use her handcuffs on me anytime," Andrea's voice conveys something that Kara can't help but grimace and make a disgusted sound.
"I need to get some alcohol in me before I can begin to unravel thinking of attractive women I can't have," Sam adds and flags down the waiter.
As the group orders their third round of beverages, Kara's brain can't stop spiraling. Particularly on the sapphic comments that have been going around all evening. Before Kara can stop herself, she blurts, "So, are all of you gay?"
"Is that a problem for you, Danvers?" Sam asks in a way that doesn't seem particularly aggressive. Kara can tell from the looks that everyone else is shooting her way that the way she phrased it could be taken differently than Kara means it.
"Of course not, I'm pan so…" Kara's sentence trails off as she sees Lena's look shift to something that Kara couldn't identify visually, but her heart is practically beating out of her chest. Was that the wrong thing to say?
"Well, it's nice to find another one of us. To join this group, you have to either run a company or a city. So Kara, any plans to take over another large corporation in town or, heaven forbid, one of theirs? I might recommend stealing one of Andrea's. How much harder can it be going from reporter to CEO?" Sam's tone now reads as flirty.
"Oh yes, steal one of mine, have to bring me back down to the group's average," Andrea drawls.
"For a group of workaholics, how do we manage to set aside one night a month to do this? I know my penthouse sits barely used, and I can't imagine it must be all that different for any of you," Lena muses aloud.
"Well, between Mayor duties and Henry, I certainly don't have any free time. I have my driver, yet I still find myself chauffeuring Henry around to school functions and play dates…" Regina adds before Sam interrupts her.
"Oh, please let me be there when you call it 'Play Dates' in front of Henry. Ruby just rolled her eyes so hard and called me embarrassing, but Henry, oh Henry is so eloquent with his words like his mother," Sam smirks over at her.
"They are the moms of the group. Sam is quite the MILF," Andrea adds, looking over at Kara as if to clue her in. Sam blushes deeply, but you can see it bolstering her confidence as she puffs out her chest.
“Gross,” Regina grimaces. "As if walking in on you with my best friend wasn't bad enough, and worse, it happened more than once. I needed to bleach my brain."
"Lena was a willing participant and my girlfriend at the time. It was your fault for not knocking," Andrea shoots back. Kara's eyes go wide at that reveal, and the hero can't help but look over at Lena, who looks like she wants to crawl through the floor to get out of this conversation.
"You two dated?" Kara tries to say nonchalantly but feels that she wasn't successful.
"It was a long time ago, and boarding school is a confusing time. Plus, look at her. Can you really blame me?" Andrea gestures to all of Lena.
"It was not that long ago. The last time it happened was last year!" Regina hisses.
"Oh god, I am not drunk enough to go through this again," Lena puts pressure on her temples with her fingertips.
"I am not that bad, thank you," Andrea looks offended, but the joking undertones are clear.
"You are lucky I wasn't Lillian or Cora. You would have never been allowed out of the house again," Regina states, and Lena grimaces at the names. Kara knows about Lillian, Lena's adoptive mother. She is the devil incarnate and arguably worse than Lex Luthor himself.
"Cora is Regina's mom. Cora and Lillian are besties," Sam leans over to fill Kara in. The alcohol running through the brunette's system is clear, with every word slightly slurred.
"Mother is certainly not 'besties' with Lillian. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, and with all the time they spent together while we were young, I lean towards the latter," Regina purses her lips at the thought. Kara has a lightbulb moment. The DEO has been looking for the identity of the second leader of CADMUS. This could be the link they hadn't had before, and Kara files that away as something to tell Alex about tomorrow, or maybe when she gets the guts to admit how she got the information. Alex's lectures on the time she spends with Lena are bad enough. This new information will not help.
The rest of the evening went by in a flash. Laughter all around, and Kara could tell just how comfortable the group was with each other. It was nice to see how everyone was when they weren't in stiff work mode.
"Well, as fun as this night has been," Sam says, standing up and looking at her watch. "I need to relieve the babysitter and maybe get some sleep before I'm up at dawn for Ruby's soccer tournament. Regina, be happy Henry doesn't do any sports." Regina snorts, the least elegant thing Kara has seen come out of the woman all evening. Seeing all the women of the 'rich bitches club' let loose has been an eye-opening experience for the Kryptonian, and she finds herself hoping for an invite to the next night. Although she hopes the invite is for Kara Danvers and not Supergirl because there is no way she can handle the level of flirting that would be thrown directly her way.
"I should probably go as well. I am very grateful you all allowed me to be a part of this evening. I had such a great time," Kara smiles genuinely as she meets every eye at the table. Lena stands with her, and Kara pulls her in for a hug. Lena tenses at first, which is a typical first response for the CEO but quickly relaxes and allows herself to enjoy the moment. Kara has noticed over time how much Lena has gotten used to physical touch. Something that was clearly lacking in the Luthor's upbringing. Kara gets the feeling that Andrea and Regina probably would react similarly to physical contact. Sam seems like the only one in the group that is almost as touchy as Kara.
"Goodnight," Lena says into Kara's ear, and it takes everything within her not to shudder at the sound. Kara simply nods as she exits the hug and follows after Sam.
"If you ever need a fellow sideline cheerleader at the soccer games, I would love to come. I am sure I can get my sister to come along, too," Kara enjoyed her time around Sam this evening and felt like she would be a good fit for her friend group, and if she could get Alex on board with Sam, maybe they can have a few more game night attendees.
"That would be amazing! Being a single mom is hard and going to these things on my own really sucks," Sam's smile disappears as a melancholy look passes over her face.
"Can I have your phone number? We can get the details down to meet up for the next game," Kara has her phone unlocked and on the add contact screen, holding it out to Sam.
After they exchange numbers, they go their separate ways. Sam enters her SUV, and Kara walks into the alley to quickly change into her Supergirl suit and fly off to her apartment.
