“Akito?”
“Hm?”
“Do you want to do my eyeliner?”
Akito choked on his water.
—
And that was how Akito found himself straddling his boyfriend in his room holding a small bottle of eyeliner he’d stashed away. Akito had taken to messing around with makeup some time ago, after he’d given up painting for good. He’d never tell this to anyone, however, for fear of getting made fun of. But it was a good way to express himself, without the darker memories associated with color splashed on a canvas to bother him.
He remembered trotting into Ena’s room when he was still in elementary school and rummaging through her drawers until he pulled out an old eyeliner pencil. He’d stashed it away in his pocket and ran back to his own bedroom before he got caught. Mini Akito had sat himself down in front of his mirror and set to work.
He cringed internally as he remembered the results. Some time in middle school, Ena walked in on him halfway through attempting winged eyeliner. He jumped and smudged it everywhere, and Ena was pissed that he’d stolen her shit, but once she brushed it off she’d gone and bought Akito some of his own. She even let him practice on her now and then. Akito had since gained the courage to go and buy his own liners, in a variety of colors. He used to absolutely fucking terrible at eyeliner, but years of practice had seen him getting better at it. A lot better.
Akito now spent a decent amount of his spare time painting intricate, colorful designs on his eyelids, sometimes even extending to other areas of his face. He’d branched out into learning how to do foundation, eyebrows, lips, contour, and more since, but that was something he could keep a secret for a little longer. He’d like to think he’d gotten quite good at this whole makeup thing. Ena would even make him do hers when she couldn’t be bothered.
“Akito? Are you okay?” Touya pinched Akito’s cheek softly and tilted his head a little. Akito mentally shook himself and twisted the cap off of the eyeliner.
“Sorry, got distracted.”
“I can tell.”
Akito huffed a small laugh and smiled. “What kind do you want? Or should I just do whatever I think looks good?”
“Whatever you want.”
Akito grinned. “I’ll probably keep it simple, then, I don’t want you sitting here for too long,” He shifted a little in Touya’s lap. “Your legs will probably go numb.” Touya simply smiled a little in response and closed his eyes.
“I’m gonna need you to stay really still though. Tell me first if you’re going to move.”
“Mhm.”
Akito readied the eyeliner and leaned a little closer to Touya’s face, placing a hand on his cheek to steady himself. He drew a line directly out from the outer corner of Touya’s eye, and repeated the same motion on the other. “Open your eyes for a sec.” Touya obliged, and Akito stilled for a second and let himself stare. It wasn’t often he got to really look at his boyfriend's eyes, because he’d always get distracted by his lips too quickly. They were a soothing, blue-gray color. They used to seem so dull, but they’d recently gained their sparkle back. Akito thought they were beautiful.
He slapped himself (mentally), and continued with the task at hand. He painted a thin line from the end of his previous line to the crease of Touya’s eyelid, and then joined it to his upper lash line. Once again, he repeated this on the other side. “Close.” Touya did. Akito filled in the sharp triangles. He sat back for a second and admired his handiwork. It was simple, but winged liner looks good on everyone. Especially Touya, he’s realizing. Akito lets his eyes travel from the black liner to Touya’s long eyelashes, then to the small mole by his eye, to his nose, cheeks, jawline, and back up to his lips.
God, he couldn’t fuckin’ help himself. He moved the hand still resting on Touya’s cheek and brushed his thumb over his bottom lip. Touya’s eyes fluttered open. He stared up at Akito and looped his arms up around his neck, smiling shyly. Akito swears his heart skipped a beat. Maybe two.
He leaned in, his own eyes closing as he moved, and closed the gap between them. He felt content as their lips slid together and resisted the urge to smile. He brought his other hand up to cradle Touya’s face. He’s never going to get tired of this. Every kiss feels like their first, but so completely different all at once. The butterflies remain, but the outright fear he’d initially felt was long gone, replaced now by pure comfort. The tentative joy hasn’t changed one bit. The carefulness of the whole ordeal has lessened a little as they each got to know what the other liked. Touya was well mannered and polite yet forceful and blunt in everything he did. He kissed in the same way. It was perfect.
Akito pulled away and grinned, brushing Touya’s hair back and planting one last kiss on his forehead. “‘M gonna add one more thing. Look up for me?” Touya smiled back and trained his eyes on the ceiling. Akito drew a few delicate lines along Touya’s lower eyelid, to simulate eyelashes, and added a sharp inner corner to the liner as an afterthought. Finally, he lifted himself off of Touya’s lap. He already missed the warmth, but he wanted to hear what Touya thought. Akito grabbed his phone and opened the camera, handing it to Touya.
“Whaddaya think?” He tried for a laid back look, but he knew Touya would be able to tell he was a little nervous anyway.
Touya took a second to look at himself in the camera, and turned to Akito. “I really like it. I didn’t realize you were so good at this.”
Akito barked a laugh and looked at Touya incredulously. “If you didn’t think it’d be good, why did you ask me to do it for you?” He didn’t feel insulted at all, but it was a little amusing. “What made you think I could do it?”
“...I just wanted to see what happened.” Touya scratched his head and smiled a little to himself. “Besides, you used to paint, right? I figured it couldn’t be too bad.”
Akito closed his eyes and laughed. “You can be a real pain in the ass sometimes, you know?” He reached for Touya and flopped onto his back, pulling Touya down with him. Touya landed with a huff and immediately made himself comfortable on Akito’s chest. “Love you, though. Dumbass.”
“I love you too, Akito.”
