Chapter Text
It was all a blurr, the lights flashing, the sirens. Finney Blake was only 10 when he lost his father after he got bit. Finney only had his sister, They both eventually found a camp and that was where they had been staying for the past 8 years, though very corrupt and on the verge of war with the north, it was the only place they could call home.
"Daddy, please don't go." Gwen cries. Her dad was sitting on the floor holding his bite mark, maybe he thought if he stopped the bleeding he wouldn't turn. "Gwen…I'm sorry, please just-i'm sorry." He said. They both knew that wasn't true, once you got bit it was the end-nothing would save you. "Gwen look away." Finney says. He holds a gun in his right hand, and slowly pulls the trigger.
Finney wakes abruptly. "Fuck it was that dream again." He says breath shaking. He dangles his legs off of his bed, stretching as he gets up. Finney can smell eggs as he walks towards the kitchen.
"Goodmorning Finney, you sleep well?" She asks, pointing towards the table, signaling for Finney to sit. "Well I had that dream again." Finney replied quickly, sitting down to eat. Gwen sighs "I'm sorry Finney." She says. "Hey it isn't your fault." Finney claims. Gwen just looks down at the stove, she moves Finney's eggs out of the pan and onto a plate.
"So what does the army have you doing today." Gwen asks. "Oh well actually its my day off." Finney replies. Gwen shoves a handful of eggs in her mouth gulping hard before speaking. "What? On a Monday tch…this is no fair i still have to do this 'school' bull shit, Fucking hell the dead have risen from their graves and I still gotta do this shit." Finney gives Gwen a stern look. "Language Gwen." He says Gwen replies with a huff and grabs her makeshift school bag that had stains from top to bottom heading towards the door. "Have a good day off Finney…I guess." She says walking to the 'school'.
Finney didn't have many friends, so its not like his day offs were anything special.
He was feeling just a tad bit more risky, and he happened to know exactly how to spend his day off. All he had to do was talk to Bruce yamada. Easy, he had known him since before the dead rose.
Finney arrived in front of probably one of the most torn up buildings, he knew exactly where to go. Finney walks through a dim lit hallway and through two large brown doors. "Who is it? Bruce is busy." A large male with curly blonde hair says with a rotten tone, he turned around. "Hey Bruce it's that Finney kid again." The male yelled.
Bruce came running in through a cracked wall, leaping on Finney, pulling him into a hug. "Hey Finney am I glad to see you." Bruce said with a smile. "I've been wondering what other goodies you could get me outside."
That's right Finney Blake, the most wimpy kid to ever live, was gonna go outside, maybe bring back trinkets for Bruce and his friend. "Well i'm glad I can see you too, its my day off and I'm in the mood for money." Finney said pushing Bruce back, for you know personal space. "Well I have just the job for you, it's at the border, just loot it and come back.." Bruce said.
Just the name gave Finney the creeps, it was a wasteland where the north and south would dump away their trash, and it's where most people would stay if they didn't have access to the north or south, aka the poor. They didnt have walls to protect them so most people thought they didn't even exist and died.
Going outside the gates without permission was strictly forbidden, but Finney had done this many times, plus for some reason he always knew where to look. So whenever he snuck out with Bruce as his Guide he would feel pretty confident, but this time was different. He had a gut feeling in his stomach. Finney had never been to the borders, he was far too scared when he went by himself and when he went out on a mission the army would punish anyone who went to the border.
The bright light at the end of the tunnel was a signal that Bruce's guiding was coming to an end. "Well I'll see you later Finney boy." Bruce said with a smile. "Bring back good stuff okay!" He yelled before running back.
Finney took a big huff of the polluted air, "best I'm gonna get," he thought to himself. He hears the shuffle of feet behind him, he quickly turns, pulling out a knife. Its a dead person but its walking. Finney had come across many of them while sneaking out or just going on missions with the army.
Finney hated how he was forced to join the army. But he was proud he got to protect his sister
He went for the head, just like he was trained. Blood spattered everywhere. Finney takes his knife out of the monsters head. It lies flat on the ground. He bends down to look at its face. He just sighs, and gets back up. "To the boarder." Finney says enthusiastically.
Finney comes across a herd while on his way. He was taught how to avoid them by staying low and quiet. Finney did his best, he was on thin ice when he almost stepped on a twig, he kicked it away quietly. After that it was quiet, but he could feel eyes on him but he wasn't sure what it was from.
Finney had been walking for about an hour or two. "It's all worth it for the money," he thought.
Finney had only seen the border in Polaroid photos, it was a wall separating the north and south though it was really tall it didn't have much reinforcements but what can you do in the apocalypse….
