Work Text:
Izuku was one of the few students selected to leave the campus and stock up on their necessities for the next two to three weeks, with their teacher in tow to make sure they don't run into any trouble. Everything was going great! Aizawa-sensei was sticking close to him since he was the one always in trouble, which to be fair was completely justified behavior and he took no offense really. Ojirou was off on the other side of the building pushing another cart for Tsuyu to fill with feminine products and other necessities she and the girls would need. He's pretty sure Koda and Mineta were getting all the snacks and drinks, maybe more than last time with how quick they've gotten through them.
It was a long shopping trip overall, for as efficiently as they were. Even Aizawa had gotten a basket with a few things for himself halfway.
"Sensei, I believe I'm done! "
"Hmm? Ah. I'll text your classmates then to see if they're done too. "
Overall, four shopping carts and a filled basket, for twenty -or often twenty one, with Sensei having his own room in their dormitory too- individuals living together.
The cashiers are put off by the sheer amount they bring to check out, which he couldn't help but giggle at, albeit awkwardly.
Though, it all went to -excuse his language- shit once they were out and loading the groceries into the van provided by the school.
Some villains attacked, jumped out of nowhere and rushed towards them suddenly.
He, out of instinct, dropped into a fighting stance, ready to defeat them and protect the people he's come to care for, though Aizawa was quick to move in front of him instead and shield him and his classmates. It was reasonable even if it annoyed him a little; Aizawa was the trained pro between the two, he was just a student.
The villain had grabbed a poor woman off the side of the street who'd been blown by their sudden entrance, and had thrown her at them. Right at his teacher, who had left his capture weapon inside the van since it was an extremely hot day outside.
Izuku had made a very fatal mistake then, much to his later horror.
He yelled no, and in a moment of panic, had shoved Aizawa to the side in order to take the brunt of the impact and catch the woman; because trained pro or not izuku would not let any of them be injured or vulnerable for the villains.
As soon as he caught the woman with one arm, he felt his senses flare and burn under his skin. The horrific cry she'd let out as she was safely taken by Tsuyu was a major indicator that something had just happened. Something that was definitely not supposed to happen.
His fingers touching Aizawa's shoulder, the hand that had pushed him away, suddenly caught the fabric of his jumpsuit without even a moment to think and tugged him back to his side. He's not sure why, but suddenly, he feels an overwhelming surge of protectiveness over the man, the danger in front of them suddenly blaring all sorts of alarms in his mind as they close in on them.
The right hand man, who's quirk seems to make his arm into a pliable limb, throws his arm back and swings it forth like a whip. It's a logical move, going for the oldest one, the real threat before the rest, the one who knows his stuff. Aizawa cancels the quirk quickly and effectively stopping the attack midway, but izuku can only register the fact that the attempt was even made. The overwhelming sense to protect- something familiar but so different this time- taking over and leaving him blinded to anything else.
Right now, his mind was set on protecting what was his.
One moment, the villain had cursed as his arm solidified into its proper form, the next he was hitting the pavement hard, knocked out cold. Izuku jumped back with the hit and landed back on his feet, making sure the rest of his group, making sure Aizawa, was safe and whole behind him. His usual bright and determined gleam in his eyes is gone, instead seething rage and aggression following his every movement, making the villains step back.
The rest of the students stepped back, any thought of stepping up to help shriveled. Midoriya was angry . And when people are angry, they are capable of anything with their one track mindset that locks in. They didn't want to intrude on his stand off against the villains, because if he could knock out that one villain with a single kick, with no regard of the injuries he's caused on the guy, surely he'll have it handled. Instead, they focused on the woman.
Aizawa knew he should make izuku stand down and take cover, grab his capture weapon and take care of the rest. Yet, he couldn't, his body was frozen in place. He knew he could easily take down the villains in a matter of minutes, but in truth? Izuku was terrifying.
Another minute, the rest of the villains were knocked out, and he became the center of izuku's attention. The moment Izuku's eyes softened at the sight of him, he knew the woman's quirk had done something to not only izuku but to himself too.
Suddenly everything felt like a threat, and only izuku made him feel safe.
The villains were down, all unconscious or in too much pain to get up, and just like that it's over. There was nothing left to fight for, just a few injuries to tend to and go back to the dorms.
But Izuku's mind is flaring.
Everything is overwhelming and his heart is pumping hard and fast on adrenaline. Everything feels like a threat, his over analytical mind invading and perceiving everything as a possible danger to him and Aizawa. He can't figure out why Aizawa is singled out from the group he came with. His classmates are here too, he should be deathly worried for them too, but it's just Aizawa. He knew Aizawa could hold out on his own just fine, yet it felt as if he needed to be there for him anyways. Could it be the woman's quirk? She'd made contact with him while he was pushing aside the man. Or is it just because Aizawa was the only other one on the offense?
He turns to Aizawa- and the man is frozen, bewildered if you will. Izuku couldn't stand how close he was to his classmates- it's too dangerous for him to be far from his reach, he needs to have him at arm's reach at the very least. Anything could happen, and his sudden surge of instinct takes over as he quickly stalks over and fretz over the man, checking him for any injury and pulling him away until they are a good few feet away from anything else. If anything else happened, he could at least have time to react and defend his aizawa.
His? It slipped into his mind so easily twice now(he thinks at least), claiming the man his own but in what sense?
A movement out of the corner of his eyes: the rest of their classmates concerned and closing in on him, and he can't allow it, he's in danger, aizawa is in danger and he won't let anyone near him-
He pulls Aizawa down firmly into his arms despite the high difference and practically snarls, "stay back! " The only one who hadn't backed down was Ojirou, who was inching closer and with hands raised, as if trying to placate a feral animal. He knew he was acting out of line, behaving unusually and manhandling his teacher but every other part of his brain was fogged with protect, fend, keep child safe, protect child-
He doesn't have a child, but the tiny bit of clarity in the back of his mind already had a theory, and didn't like it one bit.
Quirks were truly wonders.
Aizawa tensed in the safety of his arms, and izuku lashed out immediately at his classmate, all worry over hurting him vanishing.
