Work Text:
Melody walked down the street, looking up at the sky as Team Forte’s latest album played through her headphones. The moon was full tonight, a good sign; she found the nights to be easier for her when it was. Not everyone did, she remembered Esther complaining about another full moon night; she thought the monsters were worse on full moons, but Melody never noticed. But a full moon and good music buoyed Melody’s spirits. Tonight was a good night.
She checked her watch. Almost time. Other girls listen for the announcement, but Melody couldn’t be bothered to turn off her music for something as trivial as that. Besides, it was always the same: something something, magical girls go kick ass or whatever. No need to interrupt a good song, her favorite Team Forte song, just for that. Instead, she just tracked time to the beat of the drums and the playing of her favorite member of the team.
There were rumors that when you became a magical girl, your powers reflected something about you. Melody wasn’t totally sure about that, her best friend Esther had some really weird powers, but she felt her own powers were a bit closer to the mark. Her hair turned the same shade of orangey pink as the coral in her fish tanks she loved so dearly, and her powers…well, with the song finishing, now was a good a time as any.
With a snap of her fingers, Melody felt the beat flow through her. Tapping her toe, she stretched out her arms in front of her as her costume flowed over her, a flowing sleeveless dress in a mix of dark blue and the orangey pink of her hair broken up with crescent moons, just like the shape of her sigil which hung from her neck on a chain. Her hair folded itself into a fishbone braid behind her, swinging as she bobbed her head. She played in the air to the beat in her ears, and just as white fingerless gloves formed over her hands, underneath her fingers formed the white and black keys of a keyboard on which she played. As her headphones disappeared, a pair of half-moon earrings took some of their place, and the song come to a close with a flourish.
Melody smiled. She could hear, in the background, a subtle beat. It was hard to hear a lot of the time, but when she was a magical girl, and the moon was full and bright in the sky, it was really easy to hear it. As long as she could find the beat, she could play to it, and the monsters wouldn’t stand a chance. But for now, it was quiet. She’d never make it far as a solo, but that was okay for now. She had to figure out how to play on her own before she’d fit into a band. That was what Forte Keys had said, anyways.
Melody picked up the keyboard in front of her and swung it onto her shoulder, holding it up with the strap. Well, her audience wasn’t gonna find her on their own. Better go looking.
