Work Text:

Vi takes a deep breath to steady her nerves and rubs the back of her neck bashfully. “So, Cupcake.. would you maybe, I don’t know.. want to go out again sometime? Like.. a date?” She clears her throat again. “With me. On a date with me. To be clear.”

They had just come back to Caitlyn’s apartment from having lunch together.

Every time they see each other Vi feels like she could combust with happiness and she’s dying to know if she’s the only one who feels it. The moments they’ve had before that felt like tingles are starting to feel like full blown electricity.

Caitlyn froze like she just saw a ghost, before slowly turning on her heels to face her with a nervous expression. “Vi. I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”

Vi braces herself one last time before taking the leap. She can’t go on like this. Not without saying something at least. Not with how Caitlyn looks at her with those cerulean eyes that make her lose her breath. Or the way she smiles that adorable gap toothed smile that makes her heart flutter in her chest.

“Okay, please feel free to like.. tell me how much of an idiot I am or whatever if I’m wrong here but.. I like you Cait. I mean.. I really really like you. And I’m starting to feel like you like me, too?”

Caitlyn opens her mouth to answer but nothing comes out.

Vi immediately starts backpedaling at the hesitation. “If you don’t feel the same way, I- I completely understand–”

“Wait, Vi.”

“it’s just if I’m reading this wrong, and I hope I’m not but if I am, we can stay friends of course. I mean, unless you don’t want to. In which case I–”

“Vi.”

“wouldn’t blame you. I didn’t mean to assume anything. I’m sorry if I’ve made you uncomfortable or overstepped or–”

“Violet!”

Vi falls silent, looking at her with shock and a slack jaw.

Caitlyn sighs and approaches her finally. “Sorry to interrupt.” She touches the index finger and thumb of her right hand to Vi’s jaw in a gentle gesture to help her diffuse her shocked expression. “I like you, too.” A smirk grows her lips, her hand lingers and slowly traces up her jaw a few inches before she retracts it.

Vi swallows thickly, immediately missing the contact. “You do?” She murmurs.

Caitlyn smiles that smile that turns Vi into a puddle and huffs a laugh. “Of course. I’d be a fool not to.”

Vi’s heart flips at the admission, but her quickly blossoming happiness falters. “Then why does it feel like there’s something else that you’re not telling me?”

“Well,” Caitlyn turns away from her, breaking eye contact. “it’s true.. and complicated.”

Vi huffs a laugh. “Is it me? Be honest.” She jokes.

Caitlyn looks offended, eyebrows knitted together in concern and shaking her head. “No! Of course not. You’re wonderful, darling. I- There’s just.. a lot about me you don’t know and I don’t want to change things between us for the worse.”

Vi smirks. “But what if it could change for the better?”

Caitlyn pauses briefly, as if considering it before shaking out of it. “I don’t know.. I’m different, Vi.”

Vi chuckles softly. “Well, that’s not a ‘no.’” She says teasingly. “And you say that like it’s not one of my favorite things about you.”

Caitlyn scoffs. “While I appreciate that, I need you to know that I’m different in ways that you might not believe or understand.” She glances down at her feet for a minute, looking anywhere but at Vi.

Vi grabs and gently squeezes her hand for reassurance. “Please. Talk to me, Cait. Will you give me a chance to try? What are you so afraid of?”

Caitlyn ponders for a moment as her eyes well up. Her grip in Vi’s hand tightens and she looks up at the ceiling in an attempt to keep any tears from falling.

When she feels like the tears won’t spill, she looks at Vi again with still glassy eyes. Her lip quivers as she battles with the weight of what she’s about to say. As if speaking it out loud will finally make all her worst fears a reality.

She releases a ragged breath. “Everything. I’m terrified of losing you, and what we already have. Or putting you in danger. If something happened to you because of me, I’d never be able to forgive myself. You’re my best friend. I simply cannot lose you, Violet.”

Vi steps forward, pulling her into a tight embrace, her arms encircling her waist. “Hey, hey. It’s okay.” She holds her, rubbing slow soothing circles into her back.

Caitlyn chokes back a sob, burying her face into her neck and tightening her grip around Vi like she may lose her this instant if she lets go.

Vi pulls back slightly and cradles Caitlyn’s face in both her hands, wiping away the few tears that have escaped. “I’m not going anywhere. Okay?” She smiles warmly. “You’re stuck with me, Cupcake. You know that, right? Like, you’re never gonna get rid of me.”

Caitlyn chuckles wetly, her eyes still searching for any ounce of uncertainty in Vi. But all she can see is a beautiful and endlessly kind woman she’s grown so deeply fond of for the last 6 months. Every time they’re together it’s like Vi jump starts her heart. She pulls her into another hug and they just stand there for a while holding each other.

“I do.” She finally murmurs against her shoulder.

Vi stills. “What?”

“I do want to be with you.”

Vi chuckles softly. “Are you sure?”

Caitlyn nods against her shoulder. “I am.”

Vi nuzzles against Caitlyn’s neck for comfort. “Can I ask you something?”

Caitlyn purrs an affirmation.

“How long have you thought about this?”

Caitlyn mumbles. “Remember when you brought me cupcakes?”

Vi gasps softly and pulls back to look at her with wide eyes. “Our third movie date? Cait! That was months ago!”

Caitlyn’s lips part in surprise.

“Shit. I didn’t mean like ‘date’ date. Sorry, I–”

Caitlyn cradles Vi’s face and surges forward to press their lips together.

Vi’s brain short circuits as she expresses muffled astonishment before the realization hits and she melts into the kiss.

Caitlyn pulls back slightly, eyes still closed and presses their foreheads together. She whispers against her lips. “Stop spiraling.”

Vi chuckles softly and shakes her head with the barest of movements. “Not a chance.” She pulls Caitlyn into a deeper kiss, placing one hand at the juncture of her neck and jaw to tilt her head and guide her into the kiss.

Their kiss quickly becomes greedy and hungry.

Caitlyn parts her lips slightly in invitation.

Vi immediately accepts, teasing her tongue into Cait’s mouth and receiving a sigh in response.

Caitlyn pulls back slightly, sucking Vi’s bottom lip into her mouth briefly.

As passionate as the kiss started, both of them pouring all of their pent up feelings into it, they both know they still need to talk about whatever possible burden is lingering since the air had not yet fully been cleared.

When they eventually kiss more lazily, they break for air and simply relax in each other's presence while their heaving breaths try to gain a sense of normalcy again.

Vi pulls back to look at Caitlyn, cupping her cheek. “Can we talk about the secret? I want to because it’s obviously important to you. And I want to know everything about you, Cait.”

Caitlyn nods and puts her hand over Vi’s, leaning into the contact for a moment before kissing her palm, and taking her hand into her own to lead her to the couch.

They sit sideways, facing each other, knees touching.

Caitlyn holds Vi’s hands in hers and takes a deep breath.

Vi gently squeezes her hands to hopefully calm her nerves. “So, what’s the big secret?”

Caitlyn schools her expression. “Don’t laugh. Okay?”

Vi smirks. “No promises, but I’ll try.”

“This might sound silly but.. do you believe in magic?”

“Like, a magician?”

Caitlyn huffs a laugh. “Not exactly.”

Vi’s smirk grows. “What, like a witch?”

Caitlyn doesn’t correct her. She only stares at her with those deep blue eyes while she lets it sink in.

Vi’s eyes go wide with realization. “Oh shit.”

Caitlyn simply nods. “Yes.”

Vi opens and closes her mouth multiple times in an attempt to get anything out. “You’re serious?”

“As a heart attack.”

Vi considers for a moment. “Were you born like this? Or is it just like.. something you do? Or practice? I don’t know if those are the right words. I’m sorry if I’m bad at this.”

Caitlyn smiles. “You’re fine, darling. Doing better than I expected actually. And while some have obtained their magical powers from biological development, one does not need to be born with magic in order to use it.”

Vi chuckles softly. “Why do you sound so technical about it?”

Caitlyn smirks. “When have you ever known me to be anything less than thorough regarding literally anything?”

Vi huffs a laugh again. “You got me there.”

They sit in comfortable silence for a time together, thinking about the newly revealed information and letting it really simmer.

Vi laughs nervously after a moment. “Would you be pissed at me if I said I didn’t believe you?”

Caitlyn chuckles softly. “No. That’s totally fair. I knew you might not believe me or that it might take some time.”

Vi nods. “Okay. Because it feels like you’re playing a prank on me.”

Caitlyn nods. “I understand. I can prove it to you, though.”

Vi looks at her quizzically. “How?”

Caitlyn looks around for something simple to use as a demonstration. “There.”

Vi follows her direction. “The candle?”

“Yes. Will you bring it to me? I want you to keep hold of it though. Inspect it if you wish. I want to assure you there’s no trickery.”

Vi gets up to retrieve the candle. It’s a standard red candle from the store, burned about an inch down into its glass container. Still has all its stickers on the glass and smells kind of like Christmas.

She brings it back over to Caitlyn, sitting next to her and holding it in her hands. “Okay, now what?”

Caitlyn holds her hands up by her head, twisting her wrists to show every inch of her hands. No sleeves to hide any tricks up them. “Nothing in my hands. Right?”

Vi smirks. “Confirmed, from what I can tell.” She says teasingly.

Caitlyn directs all her attention to Vi with laser focus. “Hold that a little closer for me, please?”

Vi nods and holds the candle out in front of her chest, one hand on each side of it, tilted slightly towards Caitlyn.

Caitlyn gives a wickedly flirty smirk Vi’s never seen before.

“Don’t blink.”

Vi watched as the wick had smoldered and then lit up, blooming an illumination of Caitlyn’s angelic face. Her crystal blue eyes now flickering with that flame that she just created. She could physically feel herself falling for her. “Holy shit, Cait!”

Caitlyn smiles smugly. “Believe me now?”

Vi sets the candle down quickly and grabs Caitlyns’ hands. “Yes! Holy shit, that was awesome!”

Caitlyn chuckles softly. “So, you’re not like.. scared or anything?”

Vi shakes her head. “No. I mean, I do have like a billion questions. But no. I’m not afraid of you, if that’s what you’re worried about.”

Caitlyn nods. “Does this change anything for you?” She asks timidly.

Vi sighs dreamily. “After that kiss, I sure hope so. That was one of my first questions, actually. Do you want to be my girlfriend?”

“Yes, darling.” Caitlyn pulls her into another slow kiss full of adoration.
