Work Text:

“ah, this is bad… shit, why didn’t i bring my umbrella?” kaveh complained, feeling frustrated with himself.

the pale-haired student looked outside from underneath the protection of the school roof, watching as the rain grew harder. he’d already been long home by now if he’d just brought his umbrella. he kept waiting in hopes that the rain would dissipate, but it only grew worse instead.

“this all sucks. i should’ve just not given a shit about my new haircut and walk to the dorm while it was still barely raining. now i will have to face haitham, and he will definitely lecture me about forgetting my umbrella on a day where rain was announced, and-“

“…kaveh? what are you doing here?”

ah. speak of the devil and he suddenly arrives right behind you. kaveh groaned inaudibly, mentally preparing himself to hear countless of lectures.

he turned around, and looked as nervous as ever. “ahahah, if it isn’t my dear roommate! what are you doing here?” kaveh asked, acting dumb. haitham raised an eyebrow. “my lessons just ended. i think i should be asking why you’re still here, kaveh. your lessons end earlier than mine on wednesdays.”

“is that so? wow, i never noticed!”

“stop pretending to be oblivious and tell me the truth. i know that you aren’t that dumb.”

kaveh stared at haitham, suddenly turning unusually serious, stopping the dumb act. but he quickly composed himself, returning to his relaxed self. “ah, well, you caught me. i forgot my umbrella. go on, you can lecture me about it. hell, you can even make fun of me for it! i’m really stupid aren’t i?”

haitham stared at the other, somewhat unimpressed. he didn’t say anything for a while. then, he just sighed heavily, and pulled out his umbrella. “there’s no point in lecturing you,” he said exasperatedly, and walked past kaveh who stood frozen in his place.

the taller of the two pulled open his umbrella, and turned back around to look at his roommate expectantly. “come on. if you wait any longer you might get ill. there’s an important exam coming up, and you shouldn’t miss out on it.”

wha- is haitham- is he offering kaveh to share his umbrella?

kaveh looked flabbergasted for a good few minutes, his facial expression remaining the same until his face suddenly began to turn red. “w-what the hell?! do you even hear yourself?!” he yelled, sounding offended now. haitham didn’t understand what the problem was now. “what? do you not want to share?” he asked, not showing a single hint why it would be a problem to share.

kaveh didn’t believe it. the great haitham really didn’t know about the true meaning of sharing an umbrella, much less what offering to share meant. ‘of course he wouldn’t. if he knew, he would never offer it to someone like me.’

with a slightly depressed mood, kaveh walked next to haitham. he tried to will his heart to calm down from beating so quickly, trying to convince himself that this was all just a gesture of being polite.

so why… why did it still feel so… special? kaveh had often shared his umbrella with other people when he was younger, when he didn’t know how deep the meaning was yet.

but now, now it was different. kaveh was no longer naive. he knew of the romantic undertones of sharing an umbrella. and it wasn’t him offering to share this time. it was his roommate, haitham, the person he’s fallen in love with. even if they bickered so much and sometimes got into serious fights. still, kaveh fell in love with haitham.

so why was it that haitham didn’t feel the same? this was all so terrible. kaveh would’ve rather walked through the rain, getting home drenched in water than have to deal with these heavy emotions.

he felt his eyes begin to water, and his heart felt heavy while he walked next to haitham.

‘i know that you will never feel the same, haitham. still, i… i love you. i will never stop loving you, i think. life is just so… unfair. so, so unfair.’

kaveh didn’t want things to be like this. he didn’t want things to become even more strained between them just when they were starting to grow closer. but it was already far too late anyway. kaveh already fell, and he fell hard for his roommate.

if haitham… if he did end up hating him, kaveh wouldn’t be able to be mad at him. he would just smile through it all, accept it, and would keep loving haitham from far away. even if it would break him.

ah, love was so cruel.
