Favorite Taste

Summary:

That year, her birthday was going to be special.
Because it'd be the first birthday where she'd be together with Fubuki. No more awkward pining, they were dating.
Of course, that meant the fox wanted everything to be perfect.

Work Text:

Out of all the things in the world she could have wanted for her birthday, she received the one she wanted most.

Even days before the day itself, she found her wish come true as they planned for her stream as Fubuki’s tail wrapped around her despite the fox not even realizing it.

“Alright, so we have the watermelon smashing, we have the skits, we have cake...” Fubuki hummed as she looked over the list, her eyes not moving from the page like they always did whenever she tried to focus on something important.

Mio fought the urge to laugh and take the fox’s head in her hands. She generally got flustered when thrown off, but now was not the time she’d appreciate the wolf’s comments.

“Should we do something special for the cake?” Mio tapped her chin. “Like a game or something?”

Fubuki finally looked away from the page to give the wolf a look that chilled her slightly.

“Not anything physically straining. Or spinning. Or-”

“H-hey, I know that!” She groaned. “I’ll never live that down...”

“Just keep the cake down and you’ll be fine!”

“Fubuki!” She lightly pushed the fox, who just laughed.

“Mio~!”

“You’re lucky I...”

“… Hm?”

“Ah...” Mio cleared her throat and tried to force away her blush. “… N-nothing.”

“You were gonna say something~”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“Yes, it does!” Fubuki protested, her tail brushing the wolf as it moved. “I wanna know what you were gonna say!”

“It’s nothing important, Fubuki.”

“Everything about you is important to me!” She huffed. “Of course I wanna hear your thoughts! I mean, we just started dating, too!”

“Y-yeah… but that’s...”

“That’s what?”

Mio sighed and shook her head with a smile.

“I was… going to say… You’re lucky I love you.”

The fox blinked before she looked about as embarrassed as Mio felt.

“O-oh… G-gosh...” She laughed before she beamed at the wolf. “Love you too!”

Mio smiled back before taking a look at the list. Before she could see everything though, the fox pulled it away.

“Fubuki!”

“Nope! No spoilers!”

“Geeze…” She chuckled. “At least tell me you’ll be there?”

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world!”

“Good,” she hummed in thought. “Because I just thought of something...”

“Oh?”

“For the cake, I mean.”

“Ah! Well then, tell me!”

She smiled at the fox, noticing her ears perking up.

“How about a blindfold test?”

“A… blindfold test?”

“Someone in chat asked me recently what taste I like most and I wasn’t sure. Savory, sweet, bitter? Maybe doing this could help me answer?”

“Oooooh, maybe!” Fubuki nodded sagely before she grinned. “Alright! I’ll see about ordering everything you need!”

We need. You’re doing this too!”

“Eh?! Why me? It’s your birthday!”

“Because it’s a game, silly! Also, I’m not doing it alone! Who knows what you’ll order for me to eat!”

“… Hehe...” Fubuki stuck her tongue out at her. “You’re no fun sometimes~”

“Uhuh.”

“Of course I’ll do it with you! You know I would!” The fox beamed. “You just had to ask!”

“Thank you, Fubuki.” Mio chuckled. “I’m sure with you at the helm, it will be the best birthday I’ve had thus far.”

“Aww, you’ll make me blush~ I’m just happy to do this for you, Mio!”

As the day approached and Fubuki made more and more plans, Mio couldn’t help but smile as she watched it all come together.

Well, some of it.

“I’m sorry,” the cat coughed over the phone. “I’ll make it up to you next year. I just don’t want you all getting sick...”

“It’s alright, Okayu,” the wolf smiled. “Thank you for thinking of us.”

“Mm… Happy birthday, Mio.”

“Thank you. Now, go get some rest and we’ll talk more later.”

“I’m gonna invade your stream,” Okayu promised and the wolf knew she was smiling. “I’m gonna hop in when you least expect it. Make you so scared...”

“You’re falling asleep as we speak.”

“Am not…”

“Get some rest, Okayu,” Mio chuckled. “That way you have the energy to scare me.”

“Mmkay.”

“Bye for now.”

“Bye...”

With a struggling voice, Okayu hung up and the wolf sighed.

“Honestly, that cat...”

“She okay?”

Mio smiled up at person walking into the room.

“She’s tired out, but I’m sure she’ll act like she usually does later.”

“Sounds about right,” Korone sighed and shook her head with a smile. “Anyways, I went ahead and set down all the equipment.”

“Y-you did?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Those are… rather heavy.” The dog just raised an eyebrow before the wolf blinked. “Oh. Right.”

“Just because I’m wearing a yukata now doesn’t mean the muscles go away,” she chuckled. “Plus I figured getting it done earlier would help Fubuki calm down.”

“Has she been bothering you all?”

“Nah, she’s just a bit wound up. Wants everything to be perfect for you.”

“That...” Mio cleared her throat and tried hard not to blush. She still felt heat rush to her cheeks. “That sounds like her.”

“She’ll cheer up once she sees you again though, no doubt about it.”

“R-right...”

“Though maybe a kiss or two would help...”

“Korone?!”

The dog laughed and dodged the flails of the embarrassed wolf.

“You two are cute! I’m sure it’ll be fine!”

“M-maybe...” Mio fidgeted. “I’m… not sure though.”

“Hm? Why not?”

“W-well… We’ve only been together for a bit… I don’t want to overwhelm her.”

“She’s practically planned this whole party for you. She’s made all the arrangements and everything for you.” Korone smiled warmly. “If anything, a little bit of Mio is what she wants in return.”

“A little bit… of me?”

“She’s head over heels for you!” She laughed. “It was so hard not to say anything, seeing you two go back and forth for such a long time!”

“H-hey!”

“A smile or a thank you is all it takes to send that fox to her knees.” The dog winked at her. “You could never overwhelm her in a negative way.” Shaking her head, she grabbed Mio’s hand and started pulling her away. “Anyways! Your yukata is here! Custom made, ordered by Fubuki, of course.”

“W-what?!”

“Let’s get you dressed!” Korone grinned. “I’m sure you’ll freeze her to the spot.”

As she figured, the fox was busy running around, double checking everything before looking satisfied with a huff.

“Finally… Now all we need is...” Her ears stood upright as the wolf and dog approached before she turned to face them, face glowing. “Mio! Per-”

And sure enough, she froze.

“Wh-what do you think?” Mio chuckled.

Fubuki looked her over, her face turning red before she wordlessly nodded.

“See?” Korone laughed and nudged the wolf. “Hopeless, right?”

“O-oi!” The fox growled and glared at the dog, who just grinned back at her. “I’m not that bad!”

“Uhuh...” She shook her head. “How’s everything looking?”

“Everything looks ready for her, just gotta actually start the stream.”

“Well then,” Mio said while adjusting her yukata. “I’m ready if you all are?”

At their nods, she smiled. “Then let’s start!”

Honestly, none of it was a “surprise”. It was hardly meant to be. Fubuki made sure everything was clear and easy to follow for both the people on camera and the people watching. Korone there, to help with the extra lifting and just being herself, made everything even easier.

Simply put, it was fun.

“I wish I was there,” Okayu had mentioned on her call. “You all look like you’re having such a good time. Especially you, Mio.”

“M-me?” The wolf chuckled nervously. “What do you mean?”

“Seems like you like being the center of attention… or maybe someone else’s attention?”

“Okayu!”

The cat laughed and Mio could definitely hear her smile.

“I’m just saying: hang in there Korosan, you won’t be third-wheeling for long.”

Korone laughed but Fubuki matched the wolf’s blush.

“Hey!”

“Bye bye~ Happy birthday Mio~ Love you~”

Then she hung up before she could say anything in return.

“That cat...” Mio shook her head. “Oh well, what can you do when it’s Okayu.”

“Not much!” Korone chipped in, still smiling. “That’s just how she is.”

The wolf couldn’t help but smile as well.

“So, what’s next?”

The games started off simple. Guessing games related to Mio herself or questions towards her about her friends (and, of course, they chose to summit some of the most obscure facts about themselves). But once they had their fill of teasing each other, they moved on to spinning around and smashing watermelons, as if it were just another summer day with the Gamers.

Before a third turn though, Fubuki grabbed Mio’s shoulders.

“L-let’s move on before you get nauseous, ‘kay?”

“H-hey, it’s not that bad!”

“She has a point though,” Korone pointed out. “After all, you two have the food section next.”

“You two? You’re not joining us?”

“Ehehe, that’s… more of a thing for you two. I’ll be nearby though, don’t worry!” The dog grinned and held up a peace sign for the camera before exiting off the stage. “Bye bye~”

The wolf blinked and turned to Fubuki.

“What exactly did you plan?”

“Um… well… I figured… why not make it a game too! So I got us some blindfolds!”

“Eh?!”

“And we’ll feed each other something random and see the others reaction!”

“Well…” Mio huffed. “As long as I’m not doing it alone...” She paused. “But you’ll know all the food!”

“Aww, there’s still the surprise as to what you’ll chose!”

“I suppose...”

“Don’t worry! Now let’s go!”

The blindfold was a bit uncomfortable and she definitely did not like some of the smells that were in the room, but she did place her trust in Fubuki…

… She just hoped she wouldn’t regret it.

“Now! Open up!”

The wolf bit her lip before she sighed and opened her mouth. It felt… odd to get a spoonful of something unknown, but it wasn’t as bad as she feared. The food was chewy and sweet. Sickeningly so.

“Now, can you guess what it is?”

“… Candy?”

“… I’ll give that to you! It was a melted gummy!”

“Why was that one of the options?!”

“Okay, next one!”

“Wait! Wh-what about doing this with me?!”

“We’ll switch after we each eat two!”

“You didn’t tell me that, Fubuki!”

“Open wide!”

She opened her mouth to complain, only to get her senses flooded with a familiar taste.

“Is this… chicken?”

“Heheh, you think we wouldn’t get your favorite?”

“Fubuki...”

“Let’s take off that blindfold and you get to choose what ones I get!”

“O-okay!”

She made sure to first give the fox something she was sure to like. Something mild like a strange flavor of chip. Of course, she knew what it was, but it was funny to see her pretend to think it over. Especially with her facial expressions.

They went back and forth like that for a while until their options were down to just one left.

Fubuki had thankfully given the birthday wolf more chicken instead, leaving the last bit up to Fubuki.

Some sort of bitter snack that Mio supposed was well known, given that the fox chose it.

She felt almost bad for giving it to her.

Almost. It had been Fubuki’s idea, after all.

“Open up...”

Without a word, the fox opened her mouth and bit down on the fork with vigor.

For a moment, her face twisted before she continued chewing. Even with the blindfold, Mio could see she was confused.

“Fubuki?”

“I thought… it’d be worse than this.” The fox’s ears drooped slightly. “Sorry.”

“What are you sorry for?”

“That it ended with such a disappointing one.” She frowned and crossed her arms. “I wish it wasn’t such a let down.”

Mio blinked before she hummed in thought. Then, she smiled.

“There is one last thing.”

“Huh?” Fubuki tilted her head and went to pull up the blindfold.

“Keep that on! It’s a surprise!”

“Oh? What is i-”

The wolf leaned in and kissed her.

Staying for just a moment, she then pulled back and took off the blindfold on the fox. Her face was bright red, getting a grin from Mio.

“So? How was that?”

Fubuki blinked before she cleared her throat.

“S-sweet… Very sweet… Can I have more?”

The wolf chuckled.

“Greedy.”

Before leaning down again.
