Work Text:

Kageyama is not one to openly tell his relationship to people.

Strangers, acquaintances, nosy classmates—the list goes on. He’s simply not the type to announce it albeit it is the truth.

There was once, during his third year in Karasuno, a first year had confessed and curiously asked if the setter is taken. Of course—to her dismay—he nonchalantly answers yeah, I have a girlfriend. And the news spread like wildfire among the first years and new students. But the thing is, they aren’t sure if they should believe him. The signs are there—a couple bracelet, a keychain with initials, smiling at texts—but there’s no girl. Where is she? Is she even real? Perhaps he made her up to avoid getting into a real relationship.

Someone had asked his teammates one time. Hinata, half oblivious to the purpose of the question, says yeah, Yama has one. She’s really cool. To which their captain and his best friend agree yup, she cheers a lot during our games. But they’ve never matched their descriptions with anyone. Maybe even they’re in on Kageyama’s lie, too?

Still, the setter did not let this bother him. In fact, he was very confused throughout his second and third year of high school because his fangirls didn’t quit confessing and all. Though he understands that he and Y/N aren’t one to publicize their relationship so they probably don’t believe him.

He went on with his life and thought that things would most likely be different once he’s graduated. He plans to go professional, after all.

Y/N is a second year in college right now. She’s working hard on a degree and is living her best life as much as she can. Even though she can’t always be with her boyfriend, she tries to make it up to him and keeps their relationship strong.

She understands that her boyfriend tends to draw attention to himself even without meaning to. Well, he is hot. She knows it and doesn’t want to tell herself otherwise.

Like Kageyama, Y/N gets questions about her love life as well. Her college friends would ask who the lucky guy is and where did they meet and all. She answers we’re kinda like childhood friends and got together in high school. He’s really sweet but we’re focusing on our studies and careers right now. She only briefly talks about her boyfriend because she wants to keep him to herself, knowing that eventually once he becomes famous for volleyball things will take a different turn for them.

They don’t meet in school anymore so they opt to hang out in one of their houses, or in a coffee shop nearby. If Y/N is feeling like spending—she works part time—they would watch a movie or participate in workshops for fun. It isn’t much, she would say, but Kageyama appreciates every date they go to.

And he vows that one day, eventually, soon, he’ll be the one to spoil her rotten just as she deserves to be. He doesn’t know yet of all the things to give but he’ll figure that out. Somehow.

For now what he wants to do, as a high school graduate waiting for his acceptance in a professional volleyball team, is to surprise his girlfriend and pick her up for a date.

He does just that. Prepping a box of chocolates (she’s been craving but doesn’t want to spend for it) and his favourite hoodie (“the one I have doesn’t smell like you anymore”). With semi formal attire on and a new coat (Miwa gave him money to buy), he takes the train and makes sure his girlfriend didn’t suddenly make any plans and ditch him.

Not like she’d do that but since it is his first time surprising her, he’s anxious for anything and everything that could go wrong.

He texts her that he wants to meet up. When asked where and when, he replies that she should wait at the front of her college. He gets off the station with a shiver running down his spine, and takes off to meet Y/N.

Kageyama spots her almost ten minutes later—he sped walked—idly standing with her phone in hand and eyes on the screen, waiting for something. The evening air is cold, sky dim and cloudy, making for a cozy weather. He just wants to wrap his arms around her and keep them both warm.

He then sees a couple of girls walk out of the gate, and they recognize Y/N immediately. Kageyama doesn’t know why he freezes on the spot when he’s only a few feet away, but he listens to their conversation.

The girls ask why Y/N is alone, and if she’s been waiting long. She answers I’m waiting for my boyfriend. I think we’re going on a date. To which the girls coo and squeal at, congratulating and expressing how lucky Y/N is even when exams are coming up soon and work is beginning to pile up again. They leave, and one girl mentions that they should go hang out tonight if the date falls through.

Kageyama takes a deep breath at that and wills his feet to move. “Y/N!” He calls, voice slightly hoarse, jogging and passing by the group of girls that just talked to her. His face slightly lights up when their eyes meet.

“Tobio!” Y/N, unsuspecting, is only able to take a step forward upon seeing the young setter. She pulls her hands out of her pockets and opens her arms out, engulfing her boyfriend in a hug. “I was waiting for your reply, but you’re here!” Chin on his chest, she looks up and grins, joyful.

Endeared, Kageyama wraps an arm around her shoulders, pulling their bodies even closer, not caring at the moment for the attention that they garnered for putting on quite the show. “Surprise,” he says, almost a whisper.

“Hehe. I missed you.”

“Mm.” He buries half of his face in her hair. “Me, too.”

They pull away from their hug, and Kageyama takes the opportunity to bring out his gifts to her.

“Wow!” Y/N stares at the box of chocolates, eyes sparkling and mouth slightly open. “Thanks, babe, but you know I’m avoiding sweets right now.” She says with a not so convincing tone.

“You deserve it.” Kageyama shoves the box into her hands, not taking no as an answer. “Your cravings should be satisfied. And…” He takes out the neatly folded hoodie from his bag and presents it to the other, chest squeezing upon seeing her expression melt.

“I’m not that cold, either,” she responds, but takes the clothing anyway and bringing it to her face for a quick smell. “But thank you. It still smells like you.”

“I know your apartment is nearby and you like the cold sometimes, but you’ll be busy studying again so…” He shrugs his shoulders, unable to finish his sentence out loud but knowing that she understands well enough.

“Ouhh, you remembered.”

“’Course.”

He helps her put it on, over the thin sleeved top she’s wearing and pulling her hair out so that it isn’t stuck in the hoodie.

“How do I look?” She pulls the sleeves over her hands—Kageyama almost stops her from doing so—and tucks a few strands behind her ears.

“Like you’re mine.” He smiles, pressing a kiss on the crown of her head with the need to take her home so that they can cuddle and be away from prying eyes.

“Psh.” She scoffs, pretending to cringe, but the huge smile on her face says otherwise. She grabs his arm and pulls him along the sidewalk, attempting to calm her racing heart. “I’m already yours.”

“I know.”
