Work Text:
the sun was going to be up by the time she finally fell asleep.
ukulele put her hand up to her face and groaned, a sleeping bubblewrap laid beside her in their comfortable bed. snoring away, muttering quietly about whatever nonsense dream she was having.
her insomnia was getting worse, worse than most nights. her head slightly ached with a headache, and her eyes could barely keep closed. the yellow instrument rubbed at her temples, facing herself towards the alarm clock.
apparently it was currently 3 in the morning, the worst hour to be up at. the red neon bulky numbers worsened her headache, but she could care less. she wanted at least SOME sleep.
something that usually helped her rest was bubblewraps embrace. if she was lucky, the blue object would wrap her arms around the yellow object. her touch was unlike any other, gentle and soft.
however, bubblewrap was a heavy sleeper. waking her up like this would be almost impossible. the fire alarm could be blaring right now and she'd still be fast asleep. and like HELL she was asking bubblewrap to hold her. she didn't want to burden her.
ukulele liked to put on a persona, acting like a person who could handle a lot, who could manage herself, and didn't have that many tough days. she could keep her composure, and she could keep her happy and upbeat attitude for most of the day.
but at night? it was a totally different story. because she was an insomniac, she was lucky of she even got sleep whatsoever. coffee was like her best friend, and she made it for herself every morning to keep her energy high.
but with her girlfriend being able to sleep so heavily, she wanted to have that two. oh to just imagine the two cuddling, holding eachother softly, gently kissing anoth-
"u…ukulele…?"
the yellow instrument jumped a bit, as she saw the love of her life's sleepy eyes open, staring right at her.
"o-oh, bubblewrap, why are you uh…awake?" ukulele asked nervously, she was scared her girlfriends sleepy brain would process she was still awake and get mad at her.
"could ask you the same thing…" bubblewrap rubbed at her eyes tiredly, "what time is it anyways…?" ukulele turned her eyes towards the clock, "around 3am."
bubblewrap blinked, "...i'm going back to bed then, g'night uku, love you," the blue object whispered sleepily, but was stopped by a hand being placed on her shoulder.
"b…bubby? can you do something for me?" the yellow girl asked, hesitation lingered in her tone. if she didn't ask now, then the chances of sleeping tonight were almost definitely zero.
the blue girl smiled tiredly, "of course, uku. what do you need?" ukulele shakely sighed, why was it so hard to ask such a simple question?
"can you…hold me?" she finally asked, gosh this was embarrassing. but it was the best shot she had at finally getting to sleep, she also just wanted bubblewrap to hold her. as she rarely did because ukulele was always holding her.
"oh sure! i thought you'd never ask." her girlfriend put her hands on her back, making ukulele's face flush red, her hands were so soft and gentle, her sleepy brain could barely process it all. she muttered a few things here and there nervously, trying to comprehend the happiness she was feeling.
"so," bubblewrap began, gently rubbing circles on ukulele's back, "why are you still up?" the yellow instrument blinked, then frowned a bit, she knew bubblewrap wouldn't be happy if she knew the answer, but what was the point of lying to her?
"i…can't sleep. it's really hard to sleep without you giving me affection, or at least holding me…im sorry, bubby," she admitted, looking away from her girlfriend.
bubblewrap paused, taking a moment to think. she gripped onto ukulele's strings and pulled her close, giving her a small peck on the lips. "well, we are definitely gonna make sure that changes."
ukulele's face turned bright red, she was so flustered she didn't even know how to respond. her strings were really sensitive, bubblewrap hadn't really touched them before and-
"wait wait!! im-im so sorry!! i know your strings are sensitive and-"
"nono, it's okay! can you…keep touching them?"
"what..?"
bubblewrap was surprised, she expected ukulele to be upset at her gestures, but wanting her to keep going? though she wasn't upset at her asking, not at all.
"sorry i just, really wanna feel your touch. n-not in a weird way!! just-"
bubblewrap began plucking her strings lightly, "don't worry, I get what you mean," bubblewrap giggled, lightly rubbing and plucking. it stopped ukulele mid-sentence, her whole face dusted with red blush.
a harmonious melody began to play as the blue object strumed more and more. "wow ukulele, this sounds really pretty, do you think i have some musical talent hidden in me?"
the yellow object giggled a bit, "hate to break it to you, bubblewrap. but that melody is just playing because im really happy…" in all honesty, she felt guilty for admiting that to her, what if she thinks-
"nono, that's good! that's good. i would choose you being happy over a secret musical talent any day," bubblewrap said, lightly kissing ukulele's cheeks.
she was too kind.
after a while of this affectionate time, ukulele felt herself get sleepy, she curled up onto bubblewraps chest, lightly kissing her lips.
"g'night bubby…" she muttered out, before quietly falling into slumber. the blue object smiled, she was finally resting.
bubblewrap glanced over at the clock, it read about 6am. it may seem like a terrible time for other people, but after hearing about ukulele's troubles with sleeping, she was happy her girlfriend was getting some sleep.
she wrapped her arms around the love of her life, giving her strings a gentle kiss.
"night night, uku…" she said, finally falling into her own deep sleep.
for the first time in a while, they both were fast asleep in eachothers embrace.
the both of them would hold onto the memories of this night forever.
