Work Text:

“Akko” she laughed. “Where are we going ?”

She could feel the tall grass rubbing her ankles. Her girlfriend held her hands gently, guiding her. Akko had blindfolded her before they flew away. She had attempted to obtain information, but Akko had been adamant that she would not divulge anything. And Diana found herself being pulled by the girl she loved. Of course, she had complete faith in Akko, so she didn't feel the usual anxiety when she was out of control. Whenever the brunette felt that she was becoming uncomfortable, with her hand squeezed too hard or with a slight grunting sound, she made sure to check and ensure that she was still okay with continuing with the blindfold. By the Nines, she really took care of her.

Upon thinking that, Diana's smile widened. Akko was there and loved her, protected her, and she would follow the girl to the other side of the world if necessary.

“We’re arrived !” Akko exclaimed, gently letting go of the blonde's hand. She ran her hands tenderly through the blond locks before untying the headband knot and smiled proudly as she looked at Diana.

The first thing that struck the blonde was the big blue sky that stretched towards the horizon. A few clouds hid the sun from time to time. The second thing was the blanket with stars, lying on the lawn. Looking around, she noticed no signs of life. The tree near which the blanket was installed had garlands in the shape of butterflies, and a basket was placed in the centre. The smell of freshly cut grass was pleasant, and Diana felt her heart race when she met Akko's eyes.

“Surprise !” Her girlfriend screamed proudly. “My uncle kindly granted us permission to have a picnic in his field.”

Diana looked at Akko and returned her attention to the surprise.

“Diana?” Akko was beginning to worry about the lack of reaction. “Do you like it?”

The only response the blonde could give was sobbing, as tears of happiness slipped into a huge smile. Akko panicked, and Diana saw her rush to the basket to pull out tissues.

“No, no, no, no don't cry, I'm sorry, shouldn't I have? Don't you like picnics? Grass maybe? Ugh I'm sorry…”

“No Akko it's…” she began. “It's wonderful…”

She turned to the witch before cupping her face. The fear in the red eyes dissipated to be replaced by pure love. Her stomach butterflies flew, and her heart raced as if she had just run a marathon.

Akko had a unique way of making her feel like the most special person in the world. She had this gift for making her forget all those worries, and Diana could never be thankful enough for that. Whenever she felt a little bad, Akko would reassure her that she was doing fine. Whenever the situation with Daryl became too burdensome for her, Akko pulled her aside to remind her that she was proud of her. Whenever she doubted herself, Akko would take snacks and her to her mother's grave to talk to her for a bit. No one had ever been as attentive as the Japanese witch about her needs. No one had ever listened to her—and just listened, without giving her opinion—like Akko did, and no one ever warmed her like Akko when she put her hand on her skin.

She leaned in a soft, quick kiss. Akko sighed, pulling her closer for a hug.

“I stayed up a long time yesterday to make these sandwiches, I even got up early, so the tomatoes were fresh.”

“Is that the reason it took you so long to go upstairs yesterday?”

   She nodded vigorously.

“Kaa-san helped me make cookies!”

They had been with the Kagaris for a short week. Despite having previously met the Japanese family, she was still intimidated by her girlfriend's energetic family after three years.

Akko tugged her hand, making her sit down. The wind rushed between her thighs as she smoothed her blue dress with her hands. The Japanese fields stretched out as far as the eye could see, and Diana took a deep breath as Akko opened the basket in front of her.

“So we have simple cheese sandwiches, more gourmet ones with pork and salad, and small tomatoes from our garden! I know you particularly like them!”

She introduced the meal with a bow, and Diana clapped her hands, laughing. Daryl was trying to teach her high-society manners, but Akko remained Akko, and the bourgeois grace was always replaced by loving awkwardness and full of energy and good humour. Whenever Akko was around, long evenings at the mansions seemed much more fun. Diana had always found it amusing how Akko was unable to hide her boredom with boring discussions…

The brunette took a seat next to her and explained that the tree she had chosen was her favourite childhood spot to climb. Diana was listening intently, though her attention was more on Akko's smiling face. She could see the witch's dimples widening when she smiled, the way her trumpet nose twitched up when she remembered a fall, and her eyes twinkling when the blonde's lips touched her shoulder.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

“For ?”

“Everything. To be you, Akko.”

Akko blushed as she took a bite of her sandwich.

The afternoon passed quickly, and they were currently lying on the grass watching the clouds. As Akko told the story of the cloud sheep with one hand—her other arm was tucked under Diana's head—the heiress hid her nose a little more in a hug.

She couldn't imagine being in a better place. She couldn't imagine being in love with a better person.

Notes:

We had given ourselves a theme with a friend to write a drabble. She gave the theme “field” so here we go! Check out her own work (@Willowedhepatica) because she writes really well !
Sorry for the mistakes as usual, and I know, it's short, but it was between 900 and 1000 words.
