The Sword

Summary:

Link, Yeoman knight and personal guard of the Princess Zelda, has pulled the Master Sword from its stone. He has driven back the Astor the Prophet of Calamity, but now he is worried about a number of things, mainly though he is worried what this means for his relationship with the Rito Champion. Past words resurface and Link seeks someplace private to clear his mind and meditate. Revali though can tell something is worrying his love and he will not stand by and allow the knight to fall to despair.

Work Text:

A full day had past and Revali still had no signs of his boyfriend anywhere. He pulled that sword from the stone, slayed the fakes made by that bastard sorcerer, and forced said jackass into retreat. Afterwards he ran off without a word spoken, into the mist of the forest. Everyone was acting like it was normal, no one was talking about it, and frankly Revali was sick of it. He grabbed his bow only to be met by the eyes of the Princess. "Champion Revali? Where are you going?"

"I am going to find the ploughboy that I call my boyfriend." He said in a deadpan matter of fact tone that left no room for argument.

"I am sure he will return to us soon. There is no need to worry." No need to worry? Revali had respect for the Princess Zelda but that didn't stop him from questioning her sanity at this juncture.

"Nothing to worry about? Princess have you ever talked to him for any length of time?" Her eyes narrowed as she misinterpreted his words and their meaning.

"I think you would know that he does not talk to anyone. Save for you of course."

"He talks with sign as well. Never discount that. Have you ever had a long talk with him and opened up to him or do you only talk enough to give him orders?" Now there was a slightly unmistakable accusing tone which earned him a look of displeasure from Urbosa. Honestly he couldn't bring himself to care to much about any threat the thunder chieftess might level him with. He was agitated and deeply worried for the only person he had ever loved intimately. Sure he loved the late Elder who had raised him as a son, and he loved the Rito people as a whole, but Link is the only person he has ever wanted to hold and to cuddle. His blood yearned for him to seek out his love and ensure he is alright. His instincts told him he had a duty and he wasn't about to let anyone stand in the way of that.

"We talk a little. Though I am not the one that holds his heart." She had meant that to be some sort of a stab. Unfortunately for her, the Rito had been seeking to lure her into a trap and she just ended up setting up a trap and then springing it on herself. The Champion of the Rito smiled. "Exactly my point. You don't hold his heart. I do, just as he holds mine. I know when something is wrong and so I am going to go look for him." Without another word he left the camp. Zelda held in a pout while Urbosa grimaced.

It took him a while before he began to hear a gentle, hollow, whistling. He followed it until he eventually found what he sought. Curled up inside a hollow log was the Rustic Knight who had stolen Revali's heart. As he whistled he gently stroked his bow. It was a piece of masterwork crafted by Revali himself. It had been his gift that he used to ask Link to consider a relationship with him. Despite the melancholy of the tune that he whistled, the boy seemed extremely fond as he gently traced the delicate carving work. Not wanting to scare the knight who was clearly not operating as well as he normally does, Revali gently wrapped a hand against the log. The young man jumped lightly before seeing who it was. There was relief in his face but then the sadness returned. Revali said nothing and proceeded to sit next to the blond boy who occupied all of his free time thoughts. They sat there in a tense silence for a time before the Hylian sighed and opened his mouth. "Looks like you were right all those months ago." The soft drawl of his rustic roots was overshadowed by the somber tone in his voice. Revali merely clicked his beak.

"What are you referring to exactly?" He asked uncertain.

"I am nothing but a privileged person who fate has put in the right place at the right time. I have earned nothing but was instead given everything. And this sword is the proof of that. This cursed blade marks me as the reincarnation of the hero who serves the goddess faithfully and without question. I am nothing more then someone born with privileges that I do not deserve." He slumps against the Rito and then silently whimpers, "I am no longer worthy of you. I never was." There it is, there is Link's fear laid bare. Just like Revali fears losing his Charming rustic knight, so too does Link fear losing his brash but loving Rito. Revali decided serious action was needed. He grabbed the young man and pulled him into his feathery lap.

"Listen to me carefully you adorably thick headed son of the soil. I was wrong when I said those things. I said them out of arrogance towards a person who did NOT deserve it. So you are the reincarnation. Big deal. It doesn't mean you magically become a god. I have watched you learn and get better at things, Demise's Death I personally taught you expert archery. Yes you were a decent archer before but now you are able to shoot midair. Something you weren't able to do before and something few if any other Hylians can do."

"But I-"

"Your not breaking up with me. That Sword will not tear us apart."

"You would be better off with someone more deserving of you. Someone who can appreciate-" Link stopped himself. Even in melancholy he wasn't able to get such horrid words out because he admires Revali's hard work. Link always loved hard work as it made him feel alive and worth something. Now that feeling has been robbed from him.

"You can't even say it because you know its untrue. Link I decide who is deserving of my love and honestly your the only one I can think who is." Link looked at him and the gloom in his eyes began to dissipate even as tears started to form. Link had never cried accept once in joy, now he once again cried in joy for he knew what he had.

"Please be my anchor. Past lives have already started talking to me and I fear losing who I am for who we all were." Revali took his beloved's hand, "I shall be your anchor Link. That is my promise. You just promise me to cut out all this nonsense of breaking up because its not happening."

The Farmboy who was to be a hero let out a loud laugh before collapsing tiredly into the arms of his lover.

Notes:

Wrote this as I was dozing. May come back and rework it later, may add a part two as I kind of wanted to have a semi-maternal talk between Zelda and Urbosa. Urbosa actually feels a bit bad as on the one hand she doesn't like the way Revali is talking to her goddessdaughter but she can also clearly see Revali is stressed and worried for the man he loves.
