    Geralt nodded, watching as Vesemir sharpened his sword with even, measured movements.

    “What about the other one?”

    “He was too old, when we started the process,” Eskel replied, eyes cast towards the floor. Their last pet hadn’t survived for long; just as Vesemir had predicted. Human bodies needed to be altered to survive here, slowly acclimated to the magic swirling in the air of their home.

    This one was younger than the last. They had learned from their mistake.
    “And it killed him,” Ves grunted, finally looking up from his task to fix them with a stare. “They’re not much more than animals, but they do not deserve to be killed over your impatience.”
