This is Why We Use Tissues

Summary:

Prompt: “We have tissues for a reason.”
Just a little something I wrote to try and get out of writer’s block for my multi chapter fic. I saw this prompt, was inspired, and ran with it. Thus, my little baby here was born.

Work Text:

Hiccup sat down next to Astrid on her bed, holding a bowl of soup. She wrinkled her nose at it.

“This again?” she rasped as he tried to give it to her. Hiccup rolled his eyes.

“Don’t waste what’s left of your voice on complaints about my soup- that you probably can’t even taste,” he replied, trying to hand her the bowl. She shook her head.

“I don’t need to taste it to know I’m tired of it,” she responded.

“Couldn’t quite catch that, hoarsey. Now, don’t make me feed you.”

She pulled the blanket up around her shoulders and over her nose and glared at him. He looked at the blanket, then put the bowl of soup on the nightstand.

“Okay, ew. I know you’re cold, but that blanket is now officially gross. You need a clean one.”

She tried to protest, but nothing came out. Hiccup grinned and reached for the blanket, only for her to hold onto it tighter. He held onto the edge.

“Astrid, please. You’re not-“ He stopped and made a face, letting go of the blanket and rubbing his fingers together. “Why is this damp?” he asked cautiously. She looked away from him and sniffed. Hiccup threw his hands in the air, exasperated.

“Ew, Astrid! This is why we use tissues!” He pulled the blanket off of her, much to her dismay. “This is officially going in the laundry.” He tossed it into the hamper as he walked out of the room. He came back a moment later with a clean blanket.

“Here you go, Milady,” he said, spreading the blanket over her. “Or do you prefer Princess Snot?”

She moved to slap him, only to end up in a coughing fit. He sat down next to her, rubbing her back as he waited for her to finish.

“That cough doesn’t sound very good,” he told her, glancing worryingly at her as she laid back against the pillow. “Are you sure you don’t want to get it checked out?”

“I’m fine,” she croaked out, her voice barely above a whisper. He put the back of his hand to her head and frowned.

“I know you’re sicker than you’re letting on, Astrid.”

“You worry too much,” she told him tiredly as he stood up and opened the nightstand drawer. He pulled out a thermometer.

“Well, if you have a fever, we have to keep an eye on it,” he said, sticking the thermometer in her mouth as she reluctantly opened it. He pulled it out a moment later.

“Well, Doctor Haddock? Will I live?” she tried to say dramatically.

“If you listen to me and actually rest.” He put the thermometer on the table. “Because I was right; you have a fever. Now, will you please be a good girl and eat your soup?”

“Do I at least get a reward?”

“Well, I’m not kissing you on the lips, if that’s what you’re looking for.” She made a slight pouty face.

     “Rude.”

He frowned at her again. “You look really tired. And pale.”

     “Again. Rude.”

“Now please. Eat.” He held a spoonful of soup close to her. She ate it reluctantly.

“Better?” she asked after she swallowed it.

“I’d feel better if you didn’t look so tired,” he said, giving her another spoonful.

“There, see? All done,” Hiccup said a few minutes later as Astrid swallowed the last spoonful. “Was that so hard?”

She laid back down on the bed and shook her head. He moved her bangs out of the way and kissed her forehead.

“I’ll be right back,” he said, taking the bowl and heading for the door. Astrid closed her eyes after he left, allowing herself a moment. She hated seeing him fret over her, especially when it was just a silly cold. She opened her eyes and looked at the doorway as she heard his familiar footsteps coming up the stairs a couple of minutes later.

“I got some movies.” He showed her a couple of DVDs in his hand and shrugged. “I figured Lord of the Rings is always a good choice, but I have others if you want. The Lion King, Titanic -”

     “ Titanic ?”

“Don’t judge, it’s a classic. And I definitely saw a tear in your eye the last time we watched it.”

He sighed as she raised her eyebrow at him.

“ Lord of the Rings then?”

     She shrugged in response.

“Probably for the best,” he said as he put the disc into the player. “You’ve already got a pretty good snot supply; don’t really want to add to that by putting Titanic in.” He smirked at her annoyed expression as he sat down on the bed, grabbing the remote.

“C’mere, you.” He kicked off his shoe and got underneath the blankets, putting his arm around Astrid’s shoulders as she snuggled into his side, putting her head on his chest. He stroked her forehead.

“I hear this is very effective in curing illness,” he told her, smiling. She rolled her eyes and smiled.

“You cheesy goofball,” she responded as he laughed.

     “Is it working?”

She sighed and closed her eyes. “Maybe...”

He leaned down and kissed the side of her head. “Just don’t use my shirt to wipe your nose. We have tissues for a reason, and I like this shirt.”
