Chapter 1: velvet couch

Chapter Text

Not after every night-long party you had the chance to sleep as soon as you felt the need to. You either had to take an Uber, the bus or the subway back home. On most occasions, the obnoxious swaying of any of these vehicles would scare away your sleep and by the time you reached your place, you didn’t feel the utter need to sleep anymore, thus wasted a few more hours doing useless things. This time though, the house where the party had been held was no one other than Draken’s. He was one of your best friends, it was safe for you to remain there after everyone left and to crash on his huge couch.

However, Draken’s other best friend had the same idea and even beat you to it, therefore you found the couch occupied by Mitsuya. You looked at the boy through exhaustion-clouded eyes and just decided on the spot that the couch was big enough for the both of you. There was no way you would go third-wheel in Draken’s bed.

Rubbing your eyes like a child, you laid down on the couch, half an arm away from Mitsuya. There was quite plenty of space there, you didn’t even touch him when you put yourself to sleep. But now, let’s be frank. Who doesn’t turn in their sleep? You thought you wouldn’t, given how tired you were, but during your dreamless rest, you ended up closer to Mitsuya than you would’ve while awake.

The boy felt something warm around his body, but he was too tired to care, so he ignored it. A few hours later, when his brain became active enough to make his body feel everything around, Mitsuya opened his eyes to you. Your face was close enough for him to feel your breath, which, luckily for him, didn’t reek of alcohol. He pulled back a bit, one, to allow some space and two, to get a hold of who was next to him. A confused smile appeared on his face once he recognised you, but what confused him even more was the arm you had under his neck. How did you even get it there, he wondered. He didn’t touch you, didn’t remove himself from your hold either, just lazily blinked a few times, watching you sleep so peacefully, and soon got coaxed back into slumber by your state.

“Shhh!” Draken whispered to his girlfriend when she hit something in the kitchen part of the open-space.

“Sorry…”

“Let them sleep a bit more,” he added as he took whatever the girl picked from the fridge and guided her back to his room.

You heard the low voices and, although you recognised them, you couldn’t figure why they were in your house. Only when you finally became aware of what surrounded your body, you remembered where you were and your eyes jolted open. Long story short, you almost gasped seeing pretty boy Mitsuya’s face so close to yours. You also noticed the arm you had under his head and the way his pointer hooked on your other hand’s fingers, between your bodies. You swallowed as silently as you could and tried to move away, but you were already stuck to the backrest of the couch. And Mitsuya was close to you, so the only way you could “escape” was by sliding down, towards the end of the couch.

“Yeah, good luck with that,” you thought to yourself, feeling one of his knees bent underneath yours.

Therefore, you were practically a prisoner. You could wake him up and make it awkward as hell for the both of you, or pretend to sleep until he woke up and made it awkward just for him. Yes, good plan. Best plan. Or so you thought, because before you knew it, Mitsuya woke up and your eyes locked. You shut yours as soon as possible, but it was already too late. Mitsuya snorted and then laughed, seeing your cheeks catching fire.

“You must be dreaming something very nice if you blush in your sleep,” he said, not moving a muscle.

You kept your eyes shut as naturally as you could, trying not to squeeze them, pretending to be still sleeping, hoping he hadn’t seen you awake.

“Oh, I see, you want to sleep a bit more, ok,” Mitsuya continued, shifting his face on the cushion a bit. “I get it, really, this was the best sleep I had in a while.”

A yawn surprised him and from there he felt the need to stretch his limbs. He was aware you were close enough for his touch, but he kept it to briefly. Mitsuya liked you, truth be told, but he never told you because… because… well, he didn’t have an actual reason. You were beautiful, strong, and so, so confident, inspiring him and making him feel out of your league. The way you tended to your principles, never made unnecessary compromises, always reaching whatever goal you set your mind on earned you high respect from Mitsuya, and also sympathy. He called it that way, but his heart actually skipped a beat whenever you stepped in the room.

“Sorry, I didn’t want to call an Uber and Draken said it was ok to crash here. I didn’t expect you to be here as well,” you apologised, blowing your cover at last.

His earlier comment felt sarcastic to you – the best sleep in a while – as if you hadn’t occupied the rest of the couch, almost throwing him over the edge.

“There’s no need to apologise. I was being serious,” he said, keeping his eyes closed this time, not to make you feel awkward in case you opened yours. “I liked being held. I don’t remember the last time that happened.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean you kept your arm under my neck and the other hand on my chest, and not to mention your chin pressed on my forehead,” Mitsuya explained.

Your mind was running laps but you couldn’t mutter any word. Your arm was somehow still under his neck but you were a bit further away from his face. Did he move away before you woke up? Did he see the two of you in such an intimate embrace? Holy shit…

“Well, in that case, you’re welcome, Mitsuya.”

It took all the self-control you had not to whisper that with a nasty connotation, as you slid your hands away from him.

“Do you have to be somewhere soon?” He asked.

“Not really, why?”

“Why don’t you stay a little longer? This feels very nice,” he explained, wrapping five gentle fingers around forearm to position it back under his neck.

If Mitsuya had said and done those with eye contact, you would’ve combusted. You could usually handle yourself in any boy’s presence, could retort their silly advances, despite blushing a bit at some of them. But Mitsuya was simply on another level. He never treated you like any of the men you met. He didn’t want anything from you, he didn’t make any move on you, he didn’t try to win you over with sweet talk or gifts or anything really. Sometimes you were mad at him for not doing anything as you saw him watching you in that way.

“Sure,” you replied, setting your head back on the improvised pillow. “If you need someone to hold you.”

You had to add that, to assert some sort of dominance, not to let him think he’s succeeded in making you soft for him. Oh, but once you sunk into the bed, Mitsuya moved. He hid his face under your jaw, his forehead touched your clothed collarbones and his arm embraced your waist. Surprisingly, though, it felt natural. You felt his movements as if he has been doing them since forever; your breath didn’t hitch, your heart didn’t skip, you even hugged his shoulders with your free arm out of instinct.

A few minutes passed, with you two in the exact same position, breathing slowly and almost in sync, eyes closed and minds suddenly blank. Mitsuya drew faint circles on your lower back, over your shirt, of course, and you found yourself massaging his scalp.

“Did I cross any lines?” The boy asked at one point.

“Does it feel like you crossed any?”

“No, not really. I presume we both feel the same regarding this… interaction.”

He laughed a little after talking and you followed.

“This feels comfortable. Safe. Somehow even intimate,” you admitted, still playing in his light lilac hair.

“That’s good to hear,” Mitsuya said. “I feel just the same.”

“Really now? What could happen to you, a male, in this sort of interaction?” You asked in quite a rhetorical tone.

“Well, men can get harassed too, you know?”

“Wait, no, yes, I didn’t mean it like that. Of course I know that. And it’s awful, but what I meant was if you reached this level of touching, it didn’t start as harassment. Like… for a guy. But for a girl it is different, because if we get led on and end up like this, we might not have the chance to say no if the guy tries something.”

You talked miles per hour, gesturing with your hand and moving your head, touching Mitsuya’s back and head with every move. He loved to hear you talk, especially about something you were passionate or really informed about and your words came as heavy flood.

“I would never do anything like that, to you or anyone else.”

“I know that. It’s why I said I felt safe like this, with you,” your tone calmed once again. “But tell me, really, what could happen to you in such an interaction?”

“I could get my heart broken,” Mitsuya said, lifting his chin, tilting his head back enough to look into your eyes for the first time that morning.

Watching him from above empowered you, yet his droopy eyes and slightly parted lips mellowed you down badly.

“Don’t look at me like that…” you scolded him, averting your sight.

“Like what?” He whispered his question.

“Like you’re going to kiss me.”

“Would you let me kiss you?”

Your mouth opened a bit but then you sealed it with “No.”

“Ok,” Mitsuya agreed, wearing a soft smile.

He snuggled back into you, resuming the caress on your back like you didn’t just reject him. You assumed that he knew you didn’t actually reject his feelings with that “no”. You wanted him, but you wanted him to be different from the others.

“Thank you for the gift by the way,” he added.

“What gift? Your birthday hasn’t come yet, right?”

“I’ll consider it an early gift then. You know when my birthday is?”

“Of course, June 12th.”

When he smiled and his cheek squished on you, you wished you travelled back in time seconds ago and kissed the hell out of him. But noooo, no kissing on the first date, and this wasn’t even a date.

“However, explain yourself. What did I give you?”

“Calm,” he answered, squeezing your body a little. “I feel very good right here, right now, with you, and even if it never happens again, I’ll cherish this memory.”

“Wow… I’m just hugging you, and this is because we touched each other in our sleep and now there’s some sort of natural thingy between us…?”

“To me it’s more than that. You could’ve chosen to go home when you saw me here, occupying your spot. But you trusted me enough to be at your most vulnerable point next to me. I feel worthy.”

That was not what you expected to hear. You tried to hold back the huge grin threatening to form by biting your bottom lip. Your hand itched to make him face you just so you could kiss him, but you refrained. Again. It was enough for now that Mitsuya proved himself to be unique.

“I just love Draken’s velvet couch,” you lied, shaking your head a bit.

“Sure you do. I do too, that’s why I’m still here,” he copied your tone, all while making himself more comfortable in your embrace.

“Sure you do,” you practically laughed your words.
