Falling

Summary:

Grian was falling. And Scar felt it all.

A short thing written for my Leeching Life AU. If you find this AU interest lmk and I might write more, ngl this one was kinda fun!

AU description:
Double Life except instead of instantly dying when your soulmate dies the thread tying your souls slowly leeches the life from one after the other dies. There's a moment between the two deaths where you forget that you're dying too because you're holding the body of your partner in your arms and maybe you'll see them in the morning when you wake up in your beds like nothing happened but maybe this is actually the final end.

Work Text:

Grian was falling.

Grian was falling and this didn't make sense to Scar because Grian doesn't fall, he flies, so why was he falling?

The cord tying their lives together appeared in his vision for a brief moment, running from Scar's heart and over the edge of the platform towards where he knew his soulmate was. As it appeared it flashed from yellow to red and back to yellow and he felt a stinging pain run from his back to his shoulder, a pain that wasn't his.

He turned, trying to put together the pieces of what had just happened but coming up empty on explanations. He slid down the ladder, sprinting towards where he knew Grian had fallen and hoping desperately that he was okay. After only a few steps a searing, unbearable pain forced him to his knees and clouded his vision. The string appeared again, flashing and vanishing before his eyes.

He forced himself to his feet, the pain not becoming any more bearable, and stumble over to his soulmate.

Grian was laying on the ground, unmoving. An arrow had pierced through his wing and lodged in his shoulder. His eyes were wide and glazed with shock and pain and he was laying so still, so scarily still. Scar couldn't breathe for a moment as he realized that all of the pain he was feeling right now, Grian was experiencing tenfold and god he wanted this all to be over.

The yellow string appeared again, faintly, and didn't disappear. A yellow glow formed around Scar's heart and flowed down the line and Scar watched in horror aas it slowly blended into the newly changed red glow from Grian's heart. The red glow creeped up the line towards him as Scar pressed a shaking hand to his partner's wrist, searching for a pulse and finding nothing but unnatural cold.

The red pushed away at the yellow, leaving eerie shadows dancing across the ground. Scar tasted blood in his mouth as darkness shadowed the edges of his vision and he couldn't help but think about the fact that yes, this time they'll wake up in their home, unharmed, but next time...

The red glow encompassed his heart.

The darkness overtook him.
