Work Text:

Most people were born with soulmarks that stated the name of their soulmate. Heiji’s soulmate was named Kudo Shinichi.

Heiji always wondered who Kudo Shinichi was. A male, certainly, Shinichi was a male name. But what type of person was he? What did he look like? If Heiji fell in love with him, would he return his feelings?

Heiji knew about the author Kudo Yusaku, of course. He knew he shared a surname with Shinichi. But Heiji had never quite imagined they would be related at the time.

The first time Heiji saw Shinichi was on TV. Shinichi was introduced as a teen detective, and Heiji swallowed. That’s just like me. The news report went on about whatever case Shinichi had solved, but all Heiji could think about was the fact that his soulmate was right there, on TV, and Heiji could finally know what his soulmate was like.

Shinichi kept appearing on TV after that. He seemed cocky, but Heiji didn’t mind. He himself had to admit he was cocky. Kazuha had told him so enough times, after all. Heiji would save as many recordings of Shinichi’s TV appearances as possible. He had briefly wondered if this was stalking, but hoped his soulmate wouldn’t mind when he found out. They were soulmates, after all.

Heiji had to admit he started crushing on Shinichi as he watched all his TV appearances. It wasn’t love, not yet. It was too early for that. But crushing? Definitely.

Heiji anxiously waited for the day he and Shinichi would get to meet.

Then Shinichi disappeared from the media.

Heiji groaned and flopped down on his bed. Kazuha looked at him. “How did it go?”

“Well, I met him,” Heiji said. “He didn’t quite acknowledge the fact that we’re soulmates during the few minutes I got ta speak with him.”

Kazuha raised an eyebrow. “Well, ya guys were solving a case, right? Of course his focus isn’t going to be on yer destined romantic future.”

“I know,” Heiji sighed. “I just wished…” He sighed again. “I should find a way ta meet him again.”

“Drop by the Mouri Detective Agency?” Kazuha suggested.

“No,” Heiji said. “That would be too clingy. He may not like clingy.”

Kazuha sighed. Wow, a lot of sighing today. “He’s yer soulmate, Heiji. It’s not that weird.”

Heiji shook his head stubbornly. “Nope. Not going.”

Kazuha shrugged. “Suit yerself. Don’t come crying ta me later because ya regret yer decision.” She got up and left the room.

“What does she mean, don’t come crying ta her?” Heiji muttered, flopping down onto the bed again. “I never come crying ta her. Quite the opposite, in fact!”

As he laid on the bed that night, he thought about the people he had met. Mouri Kogoro, not as great a detective as he was supposed to be; Mouri Ran, waiting for her best friend’s return; Edogawa Conan, looking around the crime scene in the same manner as Heiji; and Kudo Shinichi, who solved a crime even Heiji couldn’t.

I’ll meet ya again, Kudo. I swear I will.

The next time Heiji tried to meet Shinichi, he was alert of the fact that Edogawa Conan was suspicious.

He had noticed the boy before, of course, but this time, Heiji truly noticed the boy for the first time. He looked around the crime scene like a detective, but last time, Heiji had simply assumed he was playing detective. But now, it was quite obvious he wasn’t playing. He truly was a detective. And that led to Heiji noticing the physical similarities between Shinichi and Conan, and then that led to Heiji’s theory.

Edogawa Conan was Kudo Shinichi.

It took a while for the other teenager to admit it. Heiji actually had to threaten to reveal his identity to Ran. On the way back home, Conan told him all about the Black Organization that shrunk him. And once he was done, Heiji said…

“So, about this soulmate thing…”

Conan startled. “Ah, yeah… I’m sorry for not acknowledging it earlier, but…” He grimaced. “I hoped I could keep you from this.”

Heiji felt a warmth in his chest at those words. He only wanted ta protect me. “Well, I’m here now, so give up.”

Conan huffed, rolling his eyes. “I already gave up. Didn’t you hear my acknowledgement a few seconds ago?”

That caused Heiji to laugh, and soon, Conan joined him. Their eyes met, and Heiji felt his crush on Shinichi grow even more.

Soon, it would be love.

Heiji knew he and Conan couldn’t exactly go on dates. Conan was stuck in the body of a child, after all. But then, Conan temporarily regained his body during the school play, and after the murder case was solved…

“Hattori. Will you go out with me?”

Heiji stared at Shinichi, shocked, then breathed out, “Yes. Please. Sure.”

Shinichi laughed a bit at that. “I’ll message you the address and time later, but make sure to stay in Tokyo until then, alright?”

Heiji nodded. “I will.”

Maybe Heiji was a little in love at this point.

Either way, he knew that he would enjoy the date.
