Work Text:
For as long as he could remember his world had been in danger. The lack of resources and overpopulation were always recurring problems and just a few years were enough for the total destruction of his world.
Despite this, he remembered his childhood fondly, his parents always made an effort so he was not aware of the dystopia in which they lived. He never lacked food or a roof under which to sleep.
He was a happy young hedgehog.
But he had no friends his own age as a child, the children who were born were few and were overprotected by his families. However, he remembered someone important to him.
When he started showing his telekinesis powers when he was just four years old, his parents searched for someone to foster his ability so that he could protect himself with it in his future. Luckily, they had heard from someone who had experience with such matters.
A genius.
A fox with more than one tail.
Miles was his name and he had a great ability with machines and all types of technology. The young one remembered seeing many doctorate degrees on his walls, some of them looking extremely old.
He was a young man, probably in his mid-twenties though he never said his real age. When the silver hedgehog asked, the fox replied:
"It's a secret," he said amused, "I'll just say that I look younger than I really am, maybe I look a couple of years younger... or maybe decades?"
And then he laughed leaving the little hedgehog even more confused.
He was a nice guy, always seemed willing to help anyone in need, however, just as him, he didn't seem to have many friends. He would sometimes have a sad, nostalgic look but if someone asked him about it, he would just smile and say that he was fine.
He was the hedgehog's first and only mentor. Thanks to the fox and his inventions he was able to train with his powers and take them to the maximum. He remembered that Miles had a training room and that he created fictional enemies to practice with.
He was able to lift heavy and oversized items with no problem after a few months and it was all thanks to Miles.
Every little step he took to improve was applauded and celebrated by the fox.
At ten years old, the fox told him that he no longer needed his help and training, he was already powerful enough.
Weeks later, Miles informed him that he had to go far away and would not return.
The hedgehog didn't know how to feel. On one hand he was angry, he almost felt betrayed for being abandoned by his only friend and on the other hand he was very sad, nothing would be fun without Miles.
The eldest, moved, crouched down to his height and put one of his hands on his little shoulder.
"My mission here is over, there is another place where they need my help, I'm sorry."
"But I'm going to miss you," the little boy replied.
The older man just smiled.
"We'll meet again, that's for sure. You are a strong boy, you will be able to combat anything that is put in front of you. Even though it seems that there is no hope and very difficult times are coming, you will know how to get ahead. You can handle everything in front of you, Silver" then he opened his eyes remembering something. "Oh! I almost forgot, I have a gift for you."
It was something that appeared to be a small clock but had a strange look, more futuristic and complicated.
"Use it only in emergencies, it could help you."
And with that, the older man left without returning. He was never found again.
When Silver turned 13, everything got worse. The world as he knew it was destroyed, his parents killed as well as most of the people of the world. At 14, he decided to use the watch.
It was a transporter between dimensions.
First, he traveled to a different dimension. He asked for help and was answered by a purple cat, the princess of the place.
Then, both traveled to the past in search of the being responsible for such a horrible future.
Looking for the blue hedgehog to destroy it, Silver looked surprised at who was with him.
A little yellow fox, just like his childhood friend, but there was only one big difference.
The number of tails.
Tails, the friend of the blue hedgehog, had only two while Miles had five.
A distant relative? Maybe, that's what logic told him.
But his heart insisted otherwise.
