Work Text:
It was a normal Friday evening in the Shinonome household, when the doorbell rung once. Ena grumbled hearing the sound, she lazily slipped out of her bed and went over to answer the door.
There stood Mafuyu, her body was full of bruises and wounds and her legs seemed weak, the only parts of her body that had strength were her arms, which were tightly holding a small kitten.
“H-hey, what happened?!” Ena yelled, her mood had switched from lazily lounging before school to incredibly worried and anxious.
“I tried to save a small kitten, its mother had died.”
Ena could feel her eyebrow twitch after hearing that, her overwhelming anxiety was washed over by a wave of exasperation, she got this hurt because of a kitten? What even happened—
“There was a raccoon trying to take away the kitten, so I fought it.” the purple haired girl spoke nonchalantly, “I remembered you said you liked cats, so I tried to save it.”
Ena sighed, “You’re such a bothersome person in times like these, come in so I can patch you up.” She pulled on Mafuyu’s shirt gently, as to not bring her any pain.
Mafuyu nodded and walked in the door, following Ena closely to the living room, both of them were silent and the only thing that they could hear at that time were weak meows.
“Sit down,” Ena said, “put the little cat down on the couch, I've made some tea, so drink it.” After putting down the tea, Ena went over to the cabinets and quickly grabbed a first aid kit, she seemed to be very familiar with the location of that thing.
Mafuyu only watched the tiny kitten waddle around the couch, meowing weakly when it can’t get to certain places, she felt somewhat at ease watching the tiny animal be so full of life.
It wasn’t long until Ena got back to the couch, she kneeled down in front of Mafuyu and got to disinfecting the wounds. The room was filled with silence until Mafuyu slightly winced from the pain.
“Hey, don’t move, I’m trying to rid you of that nasty raccoon’s germs!” Ena said with her typical tone, tinged with slight annoyance. “Gosh, you really are brittle.”
Mafuyu apologised silently and tried to repress her reactions to pain after Ena’s remarked, when she noticed, she let out a sigh, “People like you are so hard to deal with, don’t get into any more fights with raccoons over a tiny orphan kitten, okay?”
“I think Ena’s the brittle one here.”
“Huh?! I could easily win against a raccoon!”
“You got really weird when I tried to suppress the pain from disinfecting, you’re emotionally brittle, and you also have a soft spot.”
“W-what?! You—“
“I’m just telling the truth.”
“Shut up! You’re distracting me! It’s only normal to be worried for someone!”
With their usual banter restored, the mood lightened, and the last bandage was put on. The two were about to sit down and relax when Ena noticed the number on her phone’s clock.
She was late for school, what followed was a panicked Ena trying to get ready while Mafuyu and the kitten she saved sat on the couch observing the mess.
