Work Text:

“Hey Alex?”

Alex looked up from their DS, making sure to pause the game so time wouldn’t continue to pass. “Yeah?”

Morgan was lounging in one of the armchairs, their switch in hand. “Why do you play farm sims so much?”

Alex shrugged. “Reminds me of home, I guess.”

“Huh.” Morgan went back to their game. “That’s kinda sweet.”

Alex unpaused their game. They had crops to harvest, damn it.

“Alex?”

Yeah,” Alex repeated, not pausing their game this time because their crops.

“Can you teach me how to play Harvest Moon?”

That got Alex’s attention.

They paused their game and quickly saved. “I’ve been waiting for you to say that since I met you.” The only thing they’d wanted to hear more was a confession of love.

Asking to learn how to play Harvest Moon was basically the equivalent of Morgan saying they loved them, right?

Alex decided to choose to interpret it that way.

Alex put their game to the side. “Okay, first what we’re gonna do is figure out what game you want to play.”

Morgan blinked. “How many are there?”

Alex grinned. “Morgan, I made you a Power Point.

Morgan’s eyebrows raised into their hairline. “How many games—

“Relax, it’s only the top five,” Alex said, springing to their feet. “Let me hook it up to the TV.”

————————————————————————

Morgan connected the computer to the TV for them, and Alex quickly pulled up their PowerPoint.

“Okay, so this is structured like a top five list, so I’m starting with the last game that I’d recommend and ending with the first,” Alex said.

Alex clicked a button. “So first is Island of Happiness, I really enjoyed this game but the controls are absolutely atrocious. It was all touch screen and I hate that shit. The bachelors and bachelorettes are nice, though.”

Alex clicked another button. “Next is A Wonderful Life, I haven’t really played it but it’s the highest selling Harvest Moon game of all time and it allows you to actually raise your child. They’re remaking this game, I would actually hold off until the remake comes out.”

“Jesus,” Morgan muttered, but that didn’t deter Alex.

They clicked another button. “Next is Friends of Mineral Town, or the Mineral Town remake that came out on the Switch. Friends of Mineral Town is widely considered one of the best Harvest Moon games.”

“Are you almost—”

“Almost,” Alex said. “Next is Harvest Moon DS, it takes place in the same town as A Wonderful Life but with way more bachelorettes— bachelors in DS Cute, if you decide you want to marry a man— you’d have to play as a girl but honestly it’s worth it to marry Skye—”

Alex—

Alex clicked the button one last time. “Finally is Animal Parade, it runs on the Wii and is absolutely adored by the fandom.”

“There’s a fandom—”

Alex carried on. “The main goal is that you have to ring a bunch of bells to save the Harvest Goddess, and it has the most variety in animals you can get. This one’s my favorite.”

“Okay,” Morgan said, looking like they felt a little overwhelmed. “What game are you playing right now?”

Alex blinked. “I’m playing Grand Bazaar. I never completed the game so I thought I’d revisit it.”

“Okay. Do you have an extra copy of Grand Bazaar?”

Alex blinked again. “Of course I do. Do you— want to play Grand Bazaar?”

Morgan shrugged. “I thought it’d be cool if we played the same game at the same time.”

“Okay,” Alex said, feeling butterflies. “I’ll go get you Grand Bazaar.”
