Chapter Text
Seto Kaiba is a young man who has worked hard for a job in the police. However, his plans didn't work out as he expected, ending up as a community policeman. Patrolling the Domino's area, a route the man has taken hundreds, maybe thousands of times, even he doesn't know, he lost count a long time ago. An old, hunchbacked, limping man passes by, bumping into his arm and dropping the shopping bags he's already holding with difficulty.
-Oh, excuse me, young man! Excuse me, officer. She raises her trembling gaze to the man in uniform and, taking a few steps back, leans towards him, humbly apologizing.
-No need to apologize, old man. He bends down starting to pick up the man's purchases that are scattered around them.
-Oh, no, no need, sir! I've already detained you enough, please don't bother to collect because of my mistake! With trembling hands he leans towards the politinst, but Seto sighs and looks up at the old man saying.
-I'm doing this because I want to. Please sit in the shade and rest your bones until I'm here!
-Oh, what a kind young man! Thank you! With these words he walks slowly towards the shade of a tree.
Once he has gathered all the purchases, Kaiba takes them to the old man, wondering if he needs any extra help, looking rather weak. But of course, that's not his problem, plus he can't leave his reach for any weaker citizen, even if he has nothing better to do. He raises his eyes to the sky, covering his forehead with his hand, looking up into the sky.
"How hot it is today, and this day never seems to pass again."
The man thanks him again, gets up and walks away heavily, while the policeman does the same, but in the opposite direction.
A few minutes later, the screeching of wheels is heard, Seto turns around and sees the old man from earlier slumped over the crosswalk in front of a car.
-Hey, old man, are you okay?
The policeman sprints hurriedly towards the vomiting person, bending over him realizing that the old man is unconscious but breathing, with two fingers he checks his pulse and finds that it is very weak. The driver continues to honk insistently and swear, but the policeman is preoccupied with the person lying on the asphalt, preparing to call an ambulance, ignoring the visibly recalcitrant driver. The driver nervously slams the door shut, striding towards those on the asphalt.
-Hey! Old man, get up! I've got work to do, is this where you're staying? Get up, you damned old man! Kicking the unconscious man.
At this point, Kaiba's rage has reached its peak and in a spur of the moment, he stands up and punches the driver in the mouth causing him to collapse to the ground with a bleeding lip.
Eventually the ambulance arrives, picking up the old man and giving him the necessary treatment, unfortunately the efforts are in vain and he dies before the ambulance leaves for the hospital. The ambulance doctor's response was that the old man had suffered a heart attack some time before, followed by a second one which was fatal. After that the driver was given care, but not before both the policeman and the ambulance crew were threatened with prosecution.
- You people are assholes! You see me hurt and do nothing?! You're useless! You wasted your time with this stupid old man instead of giving me priority. Do you know who my father is?! He's staying with the doctor and the ambulance nurse.
-I don't know, if your mother didn't tell you, we wouldn't know either. -I don't know. Kaiba says through his teeth.
-Oh, you think you're hilarious? I'll sue you all for your incompetence! As for you, I'll sue you for assault and attempted murder, I'll make sure you're kicked off the force! Pointing an angry finger at Seto.
Kaiba is about to hit him again but is stopped by the arrival of two more police teams.
-No problem, because even though I won't be working as a cop anymore, I'll make sure your face will be all over the news, breaking traffic rules, running a red light and failing to yield the right of way, for assaulting a person in a precarious situation, verbally assaulting medical personnel, threatening both medical personnel and law enforcement, slander and libel, and yes, influence peddling, if we draw the line, whoever your father is, he's gonna be in almost as deep shit as you are.
-You're gonna regret this, you fucking shit!
-Keep going, keep going, anything you say will be used against you anyway. With a contemptuous smile, Seto turns his back on the man, walking off towards the station.
At the station, Kaiba is forced to confront his superior, Commissioner Yamato.
-This is the third time this week you've gotten into a fight or broken the law!
- Why am I always the one targeted? When it's very clear that all those assholes deserved it, including today's idiot.
-Well, this idiot today is the son of an important parliamentarian, and that's going to get us in big trouble.
-So what if he's the son of a parliamentarian? That doesn't give him the right to violate traffic rights, to not give aid to a person in trouble and to be a common scumbag, not to mention offending and threatening the ambulance crew as well as me, because what? He wasn't taken care of? A man is dead! I'm aware of all that, but you have no right to hit a civilian no matter how much they deserve it. As for the old man, the medical report specifies that he was very ill, it would have been unavoidable, so you don't have to have him on your conscience. About the driver, well, he filed a complaint against you, however the best option is that we all keep our mouths shut and he will back off.
-So, just because he's the son of a fucking MP, we have to turn a blind eye and cover it up to keep our jobs? That's bullshit and it's abuse of power to boot.
-It's true but we have to comply. Seto, I've known your parents since I was in high school, and you know that after their death I tried to help you and your brother as much as I could, but if anything like this happens again or if you break even one more law, I will be forced by my superiors to fire you. Do you understand?
-Yes, I understand!
-Well, now go home, tomorrow you have work to do. Seto leaves, as much as he hates the whole thing, he's aware that he can't break ties with Commissioner Yamato, he really helped them a lot. He can't afford to lose his job, he is the only livelihood for Mokuba and himself. But then again, the situation in this town sucks.
To clear his head and calm his nerves and frustration, Seto decides to walk home through the night. The night is quiet and anxious, perfect for reflecting on his own thoughts, but too wet and cool in contrast to the daytime weather. Watching her way, her attention is drawn to a few cries that seem to be coming from the park she passes. Without thinking, she runs towards the source of the noise, arriving near the lake in the centre of the park, sheltered by trees. Down on the bank lies a small, thin body, next to it a tall, spindly figure that seems to be dragging the other one into the water?
-What the hell? STAY OUT! POLICE! He says, drawing his gun, pointing it at the standing figure.
The person lifts his body up, drawing his gun, placing it at the head of the slim figure.
Looking more closely through the dim lights of the lantern, even if his face is not visible, judging by the shape of the body wrapped in a coat, the assailant is definitely a man. Now Seto is weighing his gains, not letting his guard down for a moment. Any wrong move could be fatal to the victim.
-Look, maybe we got off on the wrong foot, why don't we both put our guns down and talk like two grown men.
The assailant doesn't say a word, maintaining his threatening stance.
-You don't want to? Well, you're certainly making your fate worse.
-Huh, you're a fool, you come here alone and you really think you can negotiate with me? You should have stuck to your job as a community policeman. Seeing the cop's uniform makes him laugh.
-Oh, but I'm never alone. Speaking of which, you're just in time. Looking somewhere behind the two which causes the assailant to turn and Seto to shoot him in the arm and then lunge at him.
-You bastard!
-Yes, I lied.
The two begin to fight, managing to pull their guns away from each other. Luckily the police sirens are heard, it seems the cops Seto alerted when he entered the park have arrived.
"He took something from them."
Unfortunately the assailant manages to kick the policeman in the chest and make himself invisible while he catches his breath.
Seto walks over to the body by the lake, it's definitely a girl, if they had to guess they'd say she was between sixteen and seventeen, high school uniform, deceased state.
-The fool was bluffing.
The cops finally arrive at the lake, as do the requested medical staff, but too late, the killer is gone and the girl is dead.
The forensic officers are alerted, Kaiba has already submitted his report and although he should have left the area, he doesn't, trying to peek into the investigation. It's none of his business, but it's intriguing, it's what he expected to do when he solved the case, he can prove to these losers that he can be as good a detective as they are, if not better.
That's it, Kaiba will start his own investigation.
