Entanglement

Summary:

Something interesting happens to Eula's hand when she's young, an inexplicable event. Does the idea of quantum entanglement hold ground in a world with soulmates?

Work Text:

She was six when the first incident occurred. Eula was sitting around a dinner table, simulating a fancy dinner with her family. Elegantly picking at her food with the correct utensils in the Lawrence family’s dining hall, she was unaware of many things about the world. “Uncle Schubert, I don’t quite understand the math problems that the schoolteacher assigned me today; will you help me with those tonight?”

Schubert rotated his head. “Of course I will aid you in your journey; after all, the progeny of the Lawrence Clan must be strong in mind and body in order to secure the future of the family.”

“Thank you, uncle.” Eula reached her hand to take slightly more food, though she noticed some lesions on her right hand. There were small bruises that stained her pale skin brown and red; they seemed to run parallel to her fingers. She stared at them in awe, unknowing of their origin. “Schubert, what are these things on my hand?”

The rest of the Lawrence Clan sat in silence for a few seconds. “It’s happened,” they whispered to each other.

“What’s happened?” An inquisitive Eula had overhead the hushed conversation between the adults at the table.

“It’s your soulmate, Eula; we sincerely hope that it isn’t a filthy commoner who labors in Mondstadt.”

Eula sighed heavily at her desk, looking at some of Mondstadt’s paperwork; Jean had overworked herself, and she was asleep at her desk. The documents necessary to be done to fulfill the role as Captain of the Reconnaissance Company were tedious and boring; she almost reached Jean’s degree of sleepiness, though she practically forced herself to stay asleep with some sugary mint herbal tea that she considered was fit for a noble.

She thought the Knights of Favonious was bland without Amber around; even though Lisa and Kaeya had eccentric personalities that could turn a room alive in their own ways, she thought Amber was much more unique and exciting than either of them. As she skimmed the reports, she took another deep breath, looking for something more interesting than sightings of Abyss Mages or Ruin Guards. The most ludicrous report was a sighting of an Anemo Slime.  I will have my retribution on whoever decided it was worth my time to look over the spotting of a mere being that could easily be ended by half of the Knights , she thought.

After an hour of uninteresting intelligence, she was about to put the papers down. However, a small thought struck her.  Why isn’t Amber mentioned in any of these reports? She reported that she would go to Cape Oath to gather intelligence, but she hasn’t gotten back yet, and it’s been four days. On average, these missions take her one day and 12 hours with 12 hours standard deviation. This means that the time is five standard deviations above the mean.  Her face rose in alarm. “Amber is in trouble! I must head to Cape Oath at once!”

Kaeya poked his head through the door. “Eula, can you stop being so loud?”

Eula turned around to face Kaeya. “Such insolence from a mere commoner; vengeance will be mine! I am on a momentous journey to save a fellow in danger; do not disturb me.” Kaeya laughed, though he fell silent when Eula gave him a glare.

Cape Oath was eerily silent when she arrived. The Electro Hypostasis, Aleph, lay dormant in the center of the arena with pillars arranged in a hexagonal pattern. Realizing that it was pointless to linger around the area any longer, she moved east to the more remote part of Cape Oath. When she reached the wide area of grass with the few electro slimes lingering around, she didn’t think of anything initially; the slimes were commonplace in that area, and they only remained near the electro crystals, meaning they wouldn’t interfere with anyone who didn’t stray too close.

She was astonished when a Pyro Whooperflower suddenly emerged from the ground underneath; normally, a Cryo Whooperflower would lurk in the depths. “Aah!” Eula shouted, though she quickly regained her composure.

At least this beast, in the degree of combat power, is lesser compared to my usual opponent here, though neither poses a significant challenge.  She grabbed her claymore, the Song of Broken Pines, and deftly struck the wild plant; it stumbled backward, paralyzed by the blow. With two more elegant swings, the flower turned into black dust, leaving some nectar.  I suppose I may pick some of these exotic goods; I recall that Mona said she would pay a hefty sum for these.

“Ouch!” Eula heard a distant shout, seemingly even further south than her current location.  What was that?  She triangulated the location of the sound, and she hurriedly ran to the location of the sound, disregarding the fact that she could trip over many obstacles on the route she was taking.

After arriving at her destination, she saw two figures. The first was a Fatui Pyro Agent, wielding his pyro delusion. The second was even more surprising.  Amber!  At first, she was slightly relieved to see Amber.  Wait a minute; Amber is at a heavy disadvantage here. The Fatui Agent possesses a pyro delusion which heavily negates any effect that Amber’s vision may provide her,  she thought.

A shriek broke her trance. In one sudden motion, the Fatui Agent grabbed one of his blades and managed to draw blood from Amber’s right hand. The crimson droplets appeared to stay in the air for an excruciatingly long time, though Amber’s yells broke through the silence. In a few seconds, the Agent’s blade shined red, a true sign that it had pierced skin. “Amber! Disengage; that’s an order!” Eula shouted, jumping into the fray.

Amber turned around, looking at Eula. “Ah, Eula, thank Barbatos you’re here!”

Eula was too focused on the enemy Fatui to pay any attention to Amber’s words. “Eye for an eye!” she shouted, slamming her blade into the Agent, powered with an extra sense of rage. The enemy coughed through his mask, grasping onto his midsection as it was now his blood that decorated the green grass on the ground. When his body landed on the ground with a resounding thump, Eula ran over to Amber. “Amber! Are you alright?”

“Don’t worry,” Amber said, taking a roll of gauze out and bandaging her wound, “I’m fine, Eula. Wait, you’re hand’s bleeding too!”

Eula looked at her hand, realizing that it was also stained red. “Curses! For this, I must partake in double the amount of vengeance!”

“Don’t worry Eula, that’s not a bad thing; it’s a good thing.” Eula raised her eyebrow, clearly puzzled at Amber’s statement. “It means we’re soulmates! Didn’t your parents every tell you that whatever happens to your soulmates hand also happens to your hand~?”

“Amber, will you-”

“Yes Eula, I will marry you in the Favonious Cathedral.”

Eula’s intentions were initially to ask for an explanation, and while her mouth was about to open to make her usual statement of vengeance, she decided against it.  I suppose this result is satisfactory,  she thought.  Amber is not someone I am opposed to being wed with.

“Great! So, where would you like to have our honeymoon? I’ll make sure to ask for time off, of course.”
