“Korra?”
Korra finished exiting her rent-a-car and looked for the voice calling her name. When she found the source of the voice, her eyes widened.
In front of her was a woman she would never forget, no matter how many years had passed since seeing her. 10 years. It had been 10 years since she had last seen this brunette woman. The day after her high school graduation ceremony had been the day Korra had started her military training and the last day she had seen her.
“Asami?” Korra asked back. She was surprised at the way her voice came out raspy as if she had forgotten how to say the name.
Korra took a moment after she spoke the woman’s name to take in her presence. She somehow looked the same as she did all those years ago.
Except the longer she continued to stare at her, the more she noticed the differences. Her hair no longer cascaded down her back, but instead was pulled back into a small pony-tail that barely reached her shoulders. Her eyes that were once bare of any makeup, now contained a blush of lavender eyeshadow. And her lips, well her lips looked the same as before, full and tempting. I wonder if they still feel the same?
“Hi, I’m Opal by the way.”
Korra looked to the side of Asami to see another woman standing there. One she had not noticed before but now she was unable to ignore the proximity in which she stood next to Asami. Korra’s eyes started to look for any clues into what their relationship might be.
Then she remembered the other woman had spoken directly to her. “Oh hi. I’m Korra. Though you probably figured that out when Asami called me that.” Korra nervously shook the outstretched hand in front of her while trying to catch a glimpse of Asami’s expression.
It had been so long since she looked at those kind eyes but Korra hadn’t forgotten how to read them. And right now Asami’s eyes were trying to calculate her next move.
“So are you also heading to the farmers market” The woman named Opal asked her. “Maybe you could join us?”
This suggestion appeared to have caught Asami’s attention who was now locking eyes with Korra and waiting to hear her response.
Yes and,..” Korra rubbed the back of her neck nervously before answering the second question, “and yes?”.
She noticed a small smile display on Asami and couldn’t help but return one back to her.
A few beats of silence passed before Opal broke it, “Can someone clue me into what is going on here because I’m suddenly feeling like a 3rd wheel.”
The smiles between the two high school friends only grew at Opal’s statement. And Korra stood a little taller knowing that the pull she was feeling towards Asami, even after all these years, was noticeable by others.
“Korra and I know each other from a long time ago,” Asami said through a smile.
Hearing Asami speak again brought so many wonderful memories to the front of her mind. The time she tried climbing through Asami’s window only to end up in Hiroshi’s bedroom. Or the time they pulled an all-nighter on a school day just so they could eat ice cream sundaes and watch movies all night together. And then there was their first kiss that same night where the taste of Asami’s lips were made even sweeter with the lingering drop of chocolate syrup on them.
“Like know each other?” questioned Opal as she wiggled her eyebrows.
Korra bit down on her tongue to keep from responding. Not that she was ashamed of the truth but she was unsure of what details Asami was okay with Opal hearing. She was still unsure who this Opal was to Asami.
So rather than respond with any half-answers, Korra waited for her friend from the past to respond.
Asami narrowed her eyes and nudged the other woman. It looked like Korra wasn’t going to hear any answers from Asami.
Korra could feel the smile on her face changing to a downward direction in response to Asami’s no-response. It wasn’t like there was much to expose but still not even getting anything hurt a little.
She started to think about ways to get out of going to the farmers market with them but that would be petty. She had already told them yes. So she forced a smile on her face and prepared herself to endure an hour or so of awkwardness.
“And to answer your question Opal…” Korra lifted her eyes from the ground and locked on to Asami as the pony-tailed woman started to speak. “Korra was the first woman I ever had a crush on.”
Korra could feel the smile and confidence return to her. “I can tell you the feeling was definitely mutual.”
Asami looked directly at her and smirked. “Really? I couldn’t tell during our countless make out sessions.”
Korra smirked back at her, “still as sarcastic and confident as ever, I see.”
“And don’t forget single.” Asami added with a disarming smile.
Korra did not need years of learning how to read Asami to know what her friend from the past was presently thinking.
“I suddenly remember I have to go meet up with Bolin,” Opal exclaimed before back pedaling away from the duo.
