Work Text:

Fuki was surprised to find the door to her room at DA slightly ajar. Not only that, she could also hear strange noises coming from inside. She was just with Sakura and she saw her leave the building, so there was no way she was in there. Were they under attack? She pulled out her gun, prepared herself to confront whoever it was and kicked the door open. Two figures stood in her room. She pointed her gun at one of them, and the other pointed a gun back at her. Oh. It was those two idiots.

"Happy birthday Fuki!" Chisato shouted happily.

"Happy birthday..." said Takina, still pointing her gun at her.

Fuki sighed.

"Let's not shoot eachother, okay?" said Chisato, as she stepped between Takina and Fuki and lowered their guns.

"Sorry. Reflex," said Takina.

"How the hell did you two get in here?" said Fuki.

"The door was unlocked, so we just let outselves in?" said Chisato.

"...Why?" is all Fuki could manage to ask.

"We... kinda sneaked in here, so we couldn't be seen outside for too long," she replied.

Fuki looked at Takina. "Is she serious?"

Takina nodded. "Chisato didn't want to have to talk to the Commander, so we couldn't let anyone know we were coming."

"For the love of..." Fuki let herself fall backwards to her bed, then decided to take a few seconds to let both her adrenaline and anger subside.

When she stood back up, she saw Chisato and Takina placing three cups on her table and pouring coffee into them from a thermos they had brought with them.

"What's with that?" said Fuki.

"I knew there was no way you were gonna show up at the café if we asked you, so we decided to bring the café to you! Cool, right?" asked Chisato, sounding proud of herself. Takina nodded enthusiastically along with her.

"I guess," said Fuki as she sat down and grabbed a cup.

"Where's your partner, by the way?" Chisato asked.

"She just left in a hurry a bit ago. Probably going somewhere to prepare my surprise party, if I had to guess. She's not a subtle one."

"Aw... a shame we won't get to talk to her," blatantly lied Chisato.

"A real shame..." added Takina, sounding even less convincing.

"You two could use some acting classes." Fuki took a sip of her coffee. It was good, unfortunately. "Why are you guys here anyway?"

"Do you have to ask?" said Chisato. "It's your birthday, dummy!"

"You I understand, regrettably."

"Did you hear that, Takina? She says she understands me!" she happily whispered to her partner.

Fuki rubbed her temples and tried to ignore that. "But you?" she looked at Takina.

"Chisato asked for it as an additional birthday present. She said you would be lonely."

Chisato was sadly caught mid-drink while she said that sentence. She damn near spit it out. "Don't tell her that!"

Takina looked at Chisato, then at Fuki again. "She did not say that."

Fuki set her cup down. "Alright, let's get this over with as soon as possible. I still have more work to do and a so-called surprise party to attend, you know."

"I see. Thank you for your time." Takina stood up and bowed, heading for the door.

"Come on, Fuki you don't have to... wait, Takina!" Chisato lunged towards her partner and grabbed her arm. "We haven't even given her the presents!"

"Oh." Takina sat back down.

They took a minute to finish their coffee and make small talk, then Chisato and Takina picked up and stored their cups, cleared the table and began bringing out their presents.

"Mind going first, Takina?" Chisato said, as she patted her on the back.

"Sure..."

"You guys don't have to-"

"Yes we do!" interrupted Chisato. "It's your birthday, you only get one of those each year, you gotta make them count!" Coming specifically from Chisato, Fuki gave those words a bit more weight.

"Alright, go ahead," Fuki relented.

Takina produced a clothing store bag. "I had to ask Chisato for your size, I hope it fits."

"Thank you." Fuki didn't take Takina for the kind of girl who'd gift clothes, so this was a surprise. Takina handed her the bag, then she looked into it to find... a pair of men's boxers?????

"Chisato really liked the ones I gifted her, so I thought..."

Fuki looked at Chisato. Was she for real?

Chisato nodded with a serious expression. She lifted a bit of her skirt to show her that she was in fact wearing them this very moment.

"I... I like them," said Fuki. Chisato gave her a thumbs up. Takina showed her the most genuine smile she had ever seen on her face. Fuki wondered if maybe Chisato was the normal one.

"See, told you she'd like it!" Chisato held out her fist, then Takina happily went for a fistbump. Even taking into account it was Chisato, Fuki was surprised by how close they'd gotten.

"Now," said Chisato, "this present is a collaboration between me and Teach! I helped him make these myself!" Chisato pulled out a LycoReco sweets box.

Fuki managed not to crack a smile, but just barely. Chisato really did know her well. She opened the box to find... bullets...

"These are special bullets like the ones I use! Practice with these, and you won't ever have to kill anyone again!"

Fuki wordlessly pulled out her gun, took out the magazine, and began loading her cool new bullets. Takina slowly but surely inched towards cover.

"Aw, you're so excited to try them already?" said Chisato, recklessly unconcerned. "Be careful, though, they hurt like hell."

Fuki almost considered it for a moment. "I'm kidding, Takina," She held out her hand under the table to help her get out. She took it, then she pulled her up. "Besides, all I'd do was wreck my room, knowing your partner."

"Actually," said Chisato, "those are real hard to dodge. You'd probably graze me once or twice."

"Really?" asked Fuki, genuinely surprised.

"I tried them, I couldn't aim at all." said Takina.

"Yup. If the shooter doesn't know where they're aiming, I don't know where to move."

"Anti-Chisato bullets, huh..." Fuki took the box. "Good to have for the future."

Takina looked at Chisato with visible concern, but she just kept smiling as if she had no cares in the world.

"And of course..." Chisato pulled out a second LycoReco box with a self-satisfied smile on her face. "You didn't think that was all, did you?"

Fuki opened the box. Mika's dango, her favorite.

"You'll be able to tell the one I made, I think. It didn't turn out great."

Fuki did immediately spot the weird one.

"I thought it looked good," said Takina.

"Thanks, Takina, but you only say that because you helped me make it."

Ah, whatever. Fuki finally let herself smile. "Thanks, you two. This wasn't terrible."

She could catch Chisato's eyes brightening when she saw her smile. "You're kicking us out already? We haven't even sung Happy Birthday yet!"

"I'd rather you didn't."
"I'd rather not."
Fuki and Takina said almost simultaneously.

"Aw, alright, alright. We'll leave you be." Chisato stood up, then patted Fuki on the shoulder on her way out. "Let's go, Takina."

Takina bowed at Fuki and followed her partner.

"Wait a second," said Fuki. She kneeled down next to her bed, took out a box, and walked up to Chisato. "Sorry it's a day late, I couldn't find the time yesterday." She handed her some sort of action figure. "It's an Eliminator from the latest movie. The movie itself sucked, but the design is pretty cool anyways, and you used to talk about these all the time back in the day."

"Oh, Fukiiiiiiii!" Chisato threw herself at her to hug her. "Thank you so much! I'm so happy! I'm so happy I'll even forgive your bad movie opinions!"

"Come on, it's not such a big deal..." Fuki's face was beet red. Takina stared at them with a smile.

It took a while for Chisato to finally let go of her and Takina to drag her to the door. They both stayed there waving at her like idiots. Fuki waved back, then watched them walk out. They didn't close the door, so she could still catch their conversation.

"See, I told you she could be nice!" said Chisato.

"You were right. She did almost shoot you, though," replied Takina.

"Just an inside joke between good friends!"

"If you say so..."

"I can still hear you two!" Fuki shouted with an involuntary smile.

"Sorry!" she could hear Chisato say in the distance. "Happy birthday again!"

"Yeah, yeah, thanks." Fuki closed the door, and then they were finally gone.

She picked out the wonky dango Chisato and Takina made, lied down on her bed and began eating it. She thought back to those two, sighed, then muttered to herself. "I'm happy you are doing well, Chisato... I'm just not looking forward to the mess you're going to make me clean up after you're gone."

Notes:

We may all be here for the juicy drama, but Lycoris Recoil is also a funny show. I got hit with a flash of inspiration, so I had to write something silly like this after my last fic and before episode 13 possibly crushes our hearts. This may be the last time we get to see these two act dumb without it feeling bittersweet.

Happy birthday, Fuki!
