Work Text:

“You’re beautiful,” Mizuki says, eyeing him from the corner. Rui ends up cracking a smile.

“That’s not typically what you say to a guy, Mizuki.” Rui says playfully, his hand leaning up against his cheek. Cold fingers playing with his own hair.

Mizuki smirked. The classroom was empty, all except for them. Mizuki was sitting in the corner, by a window looking out. Rui was sitting at a desk toward the center. It was cold, but not too cold. A comforting kind of chill.

The quietness had filled the air, and as an old friend would say, ‘and the world went silent’. There was no need for too much conversation between the two. There never was. Just the feeling of being near each other was enough to lighten the mood.

And yet… there were words that needed to be said. Words that both of them had never expressed to each other. Mizuki had always kept to themselves, and Rui never prodded in their business. Once Mizuki had really found themselves to open up, it felt as if it was too late, but the feelings for each other still remained throughout the years.

Rui was staring off into the nothingness, the silence was nice for him, and yet he was always so used to the loudness of his new friends nowadays. It felt as if so much changed.

“Mmm… you’re quieter than usual,” Mizuki taunted, trying to break the silence.

“What is there to say?” he mused. And then silence again. At first, when Rui left to go to high school, the loneliness was unbearable. Rui had called them a  ‘lonesome friend’, and yet, being lonely with no one to be lonely with was odd.

They had both been outcasts, and never really kept in touch after middle school, but in truth, the time they both spent together, had helped them grow and branch out, and feel accepted within a group of others.

“I was considering going to one of your shows, yknow?” Mizuki mentioned. Almost a plug to make a joke, as most of the audience to Wonderland x Showtimes shows were kids, but they were genuine about it.

“Is that so?” Rui pondered. “That’s peculiar, I was thinking about going to one of your shows, Mizuki.” He had a warm smile on his face, like always.

“Hah, I don’t really think they’d be your thing, but if you showed up, who am I to complain?” and then quiet. There was a slight blush on Mizuki’s face, but they’d never admit it. Unsaid words. Things they both longed to say to each other, but it felt as if there was a barrier.

“Mizuki, I…” Rui started, unsure about how to go along with what he was saying, but then in the corner of his eye, he saw them get up from their seat.

“Mizuki, what are you doi-” He was cut off with their lips on his. Rui was startled at first, eyes agape, but soon he leaned into the kiss.

Rui’s hands expertly undid Mizuki’s bow, their hair falling down. Mizuki broke the kiss.

“Why’d you do that?” they asked.

“It looks nice… you’ve really grown it out since middle school, Mizuki” Rui grinned, and he combed his fingers through their hair. It felt a little stiff from hairspray, and things like that, but the gesture was still sweet.

Mizuki scoffed, not usually so embarrassed by things like this, and  pulled Rui back into the kiss, but this time it was shorter, moreso out of pure adoration and need than anything. Yet again, Mizuki broke the kiss first, and they backed away a little.

“Err… sorry, if I went too far.” The guilt had gone into Mizuki’s head by this time, but Rui was unfazed.

“You did nothing wrong Mizuki, I enjoyed it.” Rui chuckled, and got up from his chair. The metal of the chair leg, against the hard floor was not a pleasing sound at all.

“Where are you going?” Mizuki questioned, a slight panic to their voice. Inside, all they could think was don't leave me again. And they really wondered if they did something wrong. Rui’s eyes widened for a split second before he went back to his natural cheeky expression.

“We have to meet up with the others at some point, Mizuki,” Rui smiled. “I wasn’t going to leave without you”

“Ah,” Mizuki sighed. “Of course.” Relief. Rui reached out for their hand, and they grabbed his back. It felt safe. Something they had both wanted to do for a long time.

“And, you know Rui…” Mizuki taunted, earning back some of their confidence. Rui turned his head to look down at them. “I didn’t know you were such a good kisser.”

A small blush formed on Rui’s face, but he shook it off quickly.

“Likewise, Mizuki.”
