None remembered exactly when Peter was no longer happy.
They simply came to realise it, over time. In the same way they seemed to realise that Peter didn't age the same as the rest of them or that he never spoke about his family any more.
The young boy stopped visiting Genosha (the island which his father owned) and even began spending less time with the children of the Jean Grey school. It was almost as if, Kitty Pryde realised, he had lost all energy he had.
Peter put all his effort into training and exploring his powers. The life and soul seemed to have drained out of him and he became intent on getting faster. Intent (though non knew it) on never being late again.
It was hard to watch when Peter maximoff fell apart because, Kitty supposes, he had always been broken.
And perhaps that was why no one noticed until it was much to late to save the young hero. Presumably, everyone knew before Peter himself when the mutant decided to take his own life, and that is why no one was surprised.
Hurt, yes. But not surprised.
It was a painful day for all when pietro died. The joy he had once carried with him, had never been more missed.
