Unsurprisingly, Carlos is not taking it easy. The gently steaming rice cooker, the stainless steel wok on the stove, and the assortment of vegetables on the counter indicate a basic stir fry. In their normal life, it’s a fallback dinner for occasions when neither of them has much time or energy to cook—what passes for phoning it in, as far as Carlos is concerned. Carlos claims not to be morally opposed to takeout, but Andrea Reyes has left her mark on him, and he definitely views it as a last resort, exclusively for use in desperate moments. Given that he still won’t discuss how much his broken hand is hurting, it’s not surprising he doesn’t think the situation qualifies as desperate.
