Cookies

Summary:

Caranthir and Haleth bake cookies. That's it, that's the plot.

Dear IDNMT (and everyone else affected), please take this humble offering as my official apology for any emotional anguish "So do our Minutes Hasten to their End" put you through.

Work Text:

"I didn't know you could bake."

Caranthir smiled as he put down the plate of still warm cookies and sat on the sofa next to Haleth. She grabbed a cookie and moved closer to him, pressing a quick kiss to his lips before eating her cookie.

“Those are good!” Haleth sounded in equal measure impressed and surprised.

Caranthir laughed. “Is that so surprising, love? You’ve eaten my cooking and liked it.”

“Cooking is easy, everyone can cook! Baking is much harder.” She took another cookie and leaned back against Caranthir’s side.

“You truly think so? It always came rather easily to me.” He reached for a cookie himself, but Haleth snatched the plate and held it out of his reach.

“Hey!” he protested.

Haleth grinned. “I’ll give you the plate… if you promise to teach me how to make these.”

Caranthir rolled his eyes, but he couldn’t hide the fond smile pulling at his lips. “You could have just asked,” he pointed out, but Haleth only laughed.

“Well, Moryo? Do we have a deal?”

And so the next afternoon Caranthir found himself in the kitchen, Haleth next to him, his eldest brother’s cookie recipe on the counter in front of them.

“First, we need eggs. Can you get out a large bowl and a spoon while I fetch them?”

Eggs acquired, he handed them to Haleth.

“This says two eggs.” She pointed at the recipe. “You gave me three.”

“The eggs here are smaller than the ones we had in Valinor, so we need to use more.”

She rolled her eyes and muttered something about “Elvish nonsense” before cracking the first egg into the bowl with just slightly too much enthusiasm.

“Whoops.”

Caranthir smiled fondly and fished several pieces of shell out of the bowl before handing Haleth the second egg. “You do not need quite so much force.”

Haleth scowled at him and successfully cracked the other two eggs into the bowl.

“Now the sugar. Stir it in until it has dissolved while I measure out the other ingredients.”

By the time the cookies were in the oven, they were both covered in flour, the kitchen was a mess and Caranthir was laughing harder than he had in centuries.
