The Yagami Nose II - A Snotty stand alone prequel to the aformented Original Nosed one-shot

Summary:

An undertanding of how it all began, and what might have led to Light's deteriorating state of mind in the manga series.

A short one-shot prequel.
Didn't expect to write it, but what's life without whimsy?

Work Text:

At the tender age of nine, he understood that he was different from his peers.

That his intellect was vastly superior, wasn't anything new under the sun. That wasn't what this was about though.

One of his nostrils twitched in irritation, the itch growning ever slightly noticable the longer he stared out of his bedroom window.

There was no such thing as ESP or any other superpower, so Light had little reason to think of this as anything other than a quality of his person that was uniquely his own.

He sneezed.

Normally, that was a mundane thing nobody would find irritating, if not grossed out by, but for Light it was a cause for concern.

If the odd bouts of itches had been bad enough, then this episode made it clear that the sunny wheather was about to take a turn for the worse.

Yes, for you see, people, what truly made this nine year old boy different from his peers, is that he could tell what kind of weather was coming simply from the way his nose behaved.

Each little twitch of a nostril, every little drop of snot conveyed various possibilities and with a mind as bright as Light’s, he could effortlessly convert all those miniscule possibilities into probabilities, and from there….

Irrefutable certainty.

It all made him feel like a God in miniature, and perhaps rightfully so.

From what he could tell, his baby sister had not been born with this gift, seemingly as plain as their parents (don't get him wrong, they were nice for plebeians), which made him even more certain that his sense of self-importance and grandeur was warranted.

The last thing he wanted was to be thought of as vain. A vain god, who would worship that?

Nobody, that’s who, at least if they had half a brain, and Light certainly wanted no fools for followers.

Eight years later, a certain shinigami will be surprised by this weather-nosed boy that fully believed himself to be the Ultimate Gift to Mankind.

Mankind will weep, but Ryuk will have an entertaining show worth a thousand of years.
