Hirose was playing with Nakamura's hair as they cuddled in bed together, his boyfriend's head on his chest. Then a thought came to him about something that happened earlier that day.
"You were being pretty cranky when I was talking to Uji earlier. What was up with that?"
Nakamura almost seemed to ignore him, choosing instead to turn his face more into Hirose's chest.
"Oi, I'm talking to you", Hirose pulled at his hair.
"Didn't like it", Nakamura said, his voice muffled by his boyfriend's body.
Hirose grabbed his face and made their eyes meet. "And just what did you not like about me talking to an old classmate?"
Nakamura's eyes looked away but he didn't pull from Hirose's hold. Since graduating high school and getting together, he was trying to be more honest about his feelings, but it wasn't always easy.
"I was...jealous", he said after a long moment.
"Jealous? Of Uji?"
"You were really excited when you were talking to him."
Hirose laughed. "What a silly boyfriend I have. I didn't think you were the type to get jealous so easily."
Nakamura frowned. "It isn't the first time..."
"What?"
"It's not the first time. I got jealous before we dated."
Hirose looked like he was going to laugh again. "Of who? I wasn't that close with anyone."
Nakamura hesitated to say but it was hard to deny Hirose anything. "Well, first there was Otogiri-sensei-"
"Otogiri-sensei!?", Hirose exclaimed, suddenly sitting up and nearly knocking his boyfriend off the bed. "Who else?"
"Um, then there was Takeuchi, back when you guys were trying to make his girlfriend into him again."
Hirose snickered but it was clear he was holding himself back as he held his sides and curled up. "I can't believe I never noticed. And really? Otogiri-sensei?"
"You were always hanging off him. You idolized him."
"I guess I really looked up to him. But, for what it's worth, I definitely like you better." Hirose leaned over and kissed his cheek. "And you don't need to be jealous. You're the only man for me~"
Nakamura blushed and his brain short circuited because even after the dates, the kissing, and a few...other things, he still couldn't believe he got to be with Hirose like this. And Hirose always seemed so easy going.
So there was no way he'd ever get jealous, right?
Hirose wasn't even thinking about it anymore, days later. So Nakamura got a little jealous in the past. And he too, like Nakamura, never thought he'd get jealous. So when he and his boyfriend met up for a lunch date and Nakamura spent most of the time talking about a classmate, he thought nothing of it.
"Sukui-san is just so cool!"
"You really like octopi, I'm glad you met someone like you", Hirose said. Apparently this Sukui, who was in one of Nakamura's classes, really loved octopi too. Nakamura was studying marine biology, hoping to work with them one day.
Hirose was especially glad because sometimes Nakamura found it hard to socialize and make friends, even after high school. So if his socially awkward love made a new friend, it sounded like a win.
Until it became too much.
Well, that's a lie, it was never too much. Although Nakamura mentioned Sukui more and more, Hirose never found it annoying. He didn't share the love for fish and other animals of the seas outside of eating them, so it was nice Nakamura had someone to talk to about that.
Even when Nakamura had to cancel a date because he and Sukui were working late on a project, he thought nothing of it. When Nakamura talked about spending the night at Sukui's to watch some ocean documentaries, Hirose brushed it off.
And then he met Sukui.
And it turned out Sukui was a guy.
Hirose was meeting Nakamura between classes and he was already with someone and with the brightest smile ever, Nakamura introduced him as Sukui. While he was trying to keep the shock off his face, he tried to remember whether or not Nakamura had mentioned if Sukui was a boy or a girl or if he had assumed.
The conversation continued but Hirose's brain was somewhere else. When Sukui was a woman, Nakamura's fascination was cute and endearing. Whenever he complimented Sukui's intelligence or insight, it was sweet. When they spent extended periods of time together, especially at night, it was his valiant boyfriend looking after a vulnerable woman.
But looking at this man, with his deep eyes and broad shoulders and perfectly styled hair, Nakamura was the vulnerable one. Hirose thought about the two of them, sitting alone in Sukui's apartment, in the dark, on a couch, watching a documentary about the mating rituals of crabs or something and-
"Anyway, I was going to ask Sukui-san if he wanted to-oh", Nakamura stopped when Hirose hugged his arm to his chest.
"Sorry, but Okuto-kun and I have plans. So we have to get going", Hirose said.
Hirose ignored Nakamura's stammering and pulled him away. It wasn't until they were off campus that Hirose felt that burning feeling in his chest calm down.
"Aiki, what's the matter with you?", Nakamura asked.
"I'm your boyfriend, right?", Hirose said, as if that explained everything about this behavior.
"Y-yeah..."
"Then there's nothing wrong with me wanting you all to myself right now, is there?"
Nakamura blushed at that admission. Hirose was pretty free with his words and feelings but this felt like something different. Hirose wanted him all to himself? All of a sudden? Why?
Something familiar clicked about this situation. But it was such a foreign idea to him that Nakamura almost couldn't believe it.
"Aiki...are you...jealous?"
Hirose's cheeks got red and he just tightened his hold on Nakamura. "What if I am?! You've been hanging out with him so much and talking to him so much. You even cancelled a date because of him!" He huffed and Nakamura thought his heart would explode from how adorable it was.
Nakamura kissed his cheek, that was still warm and pink. "You don't need to be jealous. You're the only man for me."
