Chapter 1: Catch Your Breath

Chapter Text

Messenger bag clutched tightly, you rush through the busy morning streets of Gotham City. A single steamed cup of coffee held tightly in one hand as you dodge and weave through the pedestrians and commuters. How you haven’t slipped yet is beyond a miracle, but you continue running anyways, and it’s not until you rush up stone steps and into a large revolving door into a clean open space are you able to take a break. Placing the coffee by your feet, you rest your palms on your knees and pants, head held down with your hair covering your eyes as you catch your breath- lungs and thighs burning from the early morning exercise.

“It’s better to breathe while standing up straight, then bent over.” A voice says, it’s deep and a bit gravelly, but gentle and holding no malice. You looks around the gracious space, picking up the coffee from the floor and begin turning in circles on the spot. It’s hard to tell where the voice is coming from, many people are rushing about the space, with large floor-to-ceiling windows allowing as much natural light as Gotham provides.

Ignoring the voice, you settle your belongings on the nearest conveyor-bent and walk through the metal detector and security checkpoint. And it’s until there’s a slight beep that you turn to look at the person behind the monitor;
“Card ID please.” Is all she states, monotone voice clearly done with the day despite it only being 7:54 in the morning.
“Ah- right.. Sorry.” You state, blush rising to your cheeks as you reach to get your Wayne Enterprises ID. “Only started 2 weeks ago.” You explain as you hand the card over, it’s taken quickly but not with any force and swiped through a slot next to the monitor, and it takes a second before a quick beep is let off and a small green light flashes in the corner. The card is given back to you and you walk through the rest of the check-point, before picking up your items and slinging it around your shoulders. Other employees rush behind you and you’re quick to get out of the way.

“Did you manage to catch your breath?” The voice asks, only this time with a face. The man is about a meters distance but casually getting closer. His face is chiseled with a strong, square jawline and sky blue eyes, dark black hair hanging slightly over his forehead, you’d assume it was messy if it wasn’t for the product you could see. He reaches you and you can see the stubble detailing the lower section of his face, giving nice detail.
You realise you haven’t responded yet and quickly try to answer his question;
“Ye- yeah! Thank you for asking. Bus broke down on the way in and I had to run the rest of the way.” He hums in understanding,

“I see- public transport can be tricky like that.”

You nod in agreement and begin walking off towards the elevators, passing two guards and pressing one of the arrows up, an elevator lights up and a door opens quickly with you stepping inside and pressing a button to the 15th floor. Once in you turn around and see the man has followed you in and is standing in the opposite corner to you, giving a gentle smile which you reciprocate.

“Are you new here? I haven’t seen you around before.” He states, elevator doors closing and you feel the shaft go up, and you readjust your feet to accommodate.
“Yeah- I started a few weeks ago. Just an intern so far.” You answer, he hums again and looks around the lift, seemingly analysing the mirrors and walls reflection. You glance down at your feet for the rest of the ride, and it doesn’t seem to take a long time until the elevator stops and the doors open to your floor. You nod to the man and walk out quickly towards one of the large offices straight ahead of you.

You rush and open the door, putting the coffee cup on the table with a thump and a man smiles and looks up at you.
“7:59- Just in time.” He picks up the coffee and gives a wink before taking a sip and placing it back down. You give off a smile before sitting in one of the chairs opposite him and place your bag on the floor.

“You can now officially put “coffee-bringer” on my resume, I’m sure it’ll look real nice” You joke with him and he gives a chuckle back.
“You’re certainly becoming a professional at it, Y/n.” He says with a smile and picks up a few papers in his hands before turning his chair to look out the window, admiring the view.
“What do I have on today? Anything exciting?” You ask, eyes glistening at the thought of finally having some fun and responsibility. He turns back around to make eye-contact before taking another sip and speaking,
“Jessica needs help setting up her powerpoint in meeting room 23C, and Tech-Support asks you to perform an audit log on all the computers from levels 14 to 21.” He says with a smirk, as you groan and throw your head back into your chair. He laughs at your response before you ask
“Is that my whole day?”
“Mmmm- no. You need to get that done before lunch. Then maybe you’ll get something exciting to do afterwards.” He smiles, eyes glowing mischievously as he looks at you. You groan again before picking up your things, getting up from the chair and reaching over the desk, only to steal one of his pens and walk out of the office,
“Enjoy your day, Mr Fletcher!” You yell on your way out, and as the door closes, you hear a responding;
“You too, Mr L/n!”. You smile before pulling out a notebook from your bag and walking towards the elevator once more, getting in the first one that opens and going up to level 23. Once there you walk through the floor aimlessly until a door with “Conference room 23C” is written on a gold plaque comes into view. You open and see Jessica- a middle-aged woman with lightly tanned skin and curling brown hair reaching her chest. She looks up upon hearing you enter the room and gives you a smile.

“I see they’ve sent in the cavalry” She jokes and moves to the side, allowing you to take a look at the laptop she’s placed on the speaker’s stand with cables mindlessly plugged into different ports.
“I’m hardly a professional, Miss Kim. Just got asked to help you out.” You say and take a look at the damage, gazing at the laptop screen before turning towards the much larger black screen behind you.
“Still better at it than me, you know.” Jessica jokes, and you smirk before bending down, fiddling with the cables connected to the walls.
“Hardly a feat, Miss Kim.” You mumble to yourself, and laugh as you feel a gentle kick to your shins as you work on the wires, Jessica laughing behind you.

You knock on the door of Mr Fletcher’s office, you hear mumbling from behind and a simple
“Come in” being spoken. You open and see him holding a finger to his lips, and indicating to the phone before continuing his conversation with you making your way towards one of the chairs and sitting there, waiting patiently for him to finish,

And it’s not long before he does, putting the phone on the desk with a sigh and rubbing his eyes,
“Hard day at the office, Andrew?” You ask with a sarcastic attitude.
“Hmmm… Some idiot upstairs lost intel on the Wayne Chemicals branch and has been struggling to get in contact with them… And don’t call me ‘Andrew’”. He finishes with a smile, and you reciprocate before getting out your notebook, pages of it now filled with notes on the audits of the multiple computers you checked within the recent hours. You throw the book over the desk and it slides to Andrew’s front, he opens it and begins reading over the notes taken, his lips moving as he mumbles the information.
“Excellent! I’ll call Tech later today and tell them what you’ve found.” He shuts the book and puts it on the desk and looks up at you with a smile.
“Thank you. Is there anything else you need me to do now?” You ask, eager to start on some actual work.
“You can start by having an hour’s break for lunch. You've worked hard and deserve it. I’ll see you back here at 1:20pm.” Mr Fletcher says, and you nod before getting up and walking out of the office, messenger bag to your side as you get to the elevators, face holding a warm glow as the metal doors open ahead of you.
